Terwilliger Cyclekart Austin 7 post office special 1923 Brooklands racer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

First video of the 1923 Austin 7 Brooklands racer tribute cyclekart I'm building.
Here it mostly mocked up, still needing the body BUT almost ready for a test drive.
I'm calling it the "Post Office Special" as I hope to be able to mail the thing in parts and pieces.

    You're front suspension is going to bind! When spring flattens out, there is nowhere to go!

    Yeah it looks bad on camera, but when I jump on the spring it has a good bit of travel before it hits the radius rods. More than needed for this little car. What I'd really like is a softer/weaker spring. Which would bind easier of course, but I can relocate the radius rod if needed

    Looks like the spring is trapped against the axle and any spring flexing would be either side of the chassis mount. Would be interesting to see it on the ground with a bit of weight on it. On a second look, it seems that the jack under the front axle is already causing that deformation of the spring around the perch.

    If you point the exhaust to the ground, the ground will absorb some of the noise.

    Subscribed! And following with great interest from the UK, ive scratch built several full sized racing cars for others through the years and am toying with the idea of a austin inspired cyclecar (ratherore suitable for my own budgit/room requirements!)

    Thanks Adam, and have a look at my Austin CK build a few years ago. The Austin 7 lends itself really well to a CK, and it's crazy how much fun they are to drive!

    My car is a loose replica of the Ford Lotus with a 61.5" wheel base /12.5 degree caster with rack & pinion steering. Flat out on gravel or asphalt it does'nt wobble or wonder a bit. Looks like a nice build

    You're never too old to have fun! My wife is from Birmingham, so the Austin 7 has a place in my heart.

    Nice work, strong, light and well triangulated, definately a step above the traditional 1x3 ladder frame. I think you may find that your 1"x14 ga front axle to be too delicate and will require further bracing. Are you using Gas or Mig?

  • @BenTerwilliger

    @BenTerwilliger

    Mig, and you'd be surprised how well that 14ga holds up! Haha, off camera the axle got plated at the bends with 1" wide .120 flat stock, as long as I don't go Baja racing it's fine

    Have you considered including a telescopic steering shaft. I’d be frightened of hitting something and being speared by that shaft.

    Very nice!! New Subscriber here.... I am starting a KZread channel with the build of a 1928 RIP GN/MG restomod special 3 wheeler with 4 wheels. I have been assembling a decent machine shop so that I will be able to make any parts I need for this or any of my other projects. I am planning on starting this project as soon as it gets warm enough to work out in the barn shop. It is a 1928 Morgan with a wooden frame over steel and an experimental aircraft supercharged opposed twin engine. I am going ot adapt this engine to an MG 4 speed manual gearbox with the use of a two part hand cast aluminum um adapter plate. The gearbox will connect to an MG differential with awesome wire wheels. The body is made from stretched aircraft fabric sprayed with plasticizer for stiffness. There is only one 1928 RIP aero 3 wheels with 4 wheels that is currently being raced by Charlie Martin in the hillclimb races as well as the Goodwood revivals in the UK. I plan on taking mine to join in the festivities next year or the year after just like the American doctor does with Ol'Yeller to join in the races. I hope to see you there.
