Tertill review - This robot weeds my garden for me!

Tertill is the Roomba of the garden. It roams around plucking weeds throughout the day and removing single most irritating part of gardening from the equation: weeding. This robot gardener is solar-powered and completely self-contained, meaning you won't have to babysit or tend to it at all.

Actually, when the wheels roll over the dirt they are killing the weeds in the soil before they even sprout, much like a well-worn path doesn't have weeds. This is how Tertill kills most of the weeds. The weed whacker only kills the ones that survive the wheels. You can see video of it working at www.trtill.com

I have a Tertill, it is not nearly as good as advertised. It is very difficult to maintain, I literally have to babysit it because it constantly gets stuck. A typical garden wont work, it has to be a VERY smooth garden that is free of dirt clumps, dips in the ground or uneven soil. SO after one failed season trying to use it, we built its very own raised bed that is smaller and more manicured and has a wall around it and new dirt and evenly spread out. Perfect for the Tertill right? I still have to babysit it, it still somehow climbs over the wall and falls off the raised bed, gets stuck on small dirt clumps, gets stuck on the guard rails that came with the robot. OH Yeah and you have to keep the wheels free of dirt, when it rains the wheels get gummed up with mud and then you have to take it out of the garden and clean it all off. Anything that can go wrong does. I will keep playing with it and trying to get it to work because I REALLY want it to succeed. But for now my wife just laughs at me and thinks this robot is a horrible gimmick. I think she is right but I wont admit that to her.

Tertill actually prevents most weeds from emerging at all by constantly disturbing the topmost layer of soil, and killing the weeds at the pre-emergent state with no need for chemicals. This is similar to why vegetation doesn't grow on a well-worn path. Those weeds that do grow, it cuts with its weed whacker. By cutting them continuously they eventually shrivel up and die.

Not sure if this would work for that, it seems like it might. It would probably have to run day and night at fixed intervals. If it has to spends hours getting charged before working or it can't run at night, it probably won't do.

The reason Tertill works even though it does not pull the whole weed is that it kills the weeds before they grow strong roots and get established. This method works since Tertill weeds every day for an hour or two a day. The best part is that unlike hand pulling the soil's nutrients don't get removed with the weeds.

Tertill was actually tested by the Cornell School of Ag last summer in an A/B plot. Their research showed it is effective as hand weeding. This is because the wheels scrub the top layer of soil killing the preemergent weeds even before they have a chance to sprout. Weeds that do sprout eventually shrivel up and die after a series of cuts. Tertill is able to do it this way even though a human cannot because it is in the garden weeding over an hour a day, every day. It is this consistency that makes it so effective.

We did not pay Andriod Headlines anything to do the review. We are very grateful that they took it upon themselves to review the product. These results are consistent with the Cornell School of Agriculture results and we did not pay them either :) Our team spent four years working and developing Tertill. It was very difficult to get a solution that could work and we are excited when folks are willing to give it a fair test.

We are working hard to create a way for people to garden without using herbicides, leveraging top researchers. We have researchers at three universities who see Tertill as a new modality of weed control. The first two, Cornell School of Agriculture and the University of Maine have already reported on Tertill's effectiveness.

A team of dedicated engineers spent four years developing Tertill to make it possible for more people to maintain a home garden. This and many other independent reviews say it makes a big difference. I don't think your "looking at it" compares.
