Terry Hall, Lead Singer of the Specials, Dead at 63
Ойын-сауық
Terry Hall, lead singer of the English ska band the Specials, has died. He was 63. In a statement released by the Specials on Monday, the band said Hall died on Dec. 18, after a brief illness. The statement on Twitter read, 'Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.'

One of the saddest things about getting older is seeing all the figures who loomed large in your youth, who were so loved and had such a big impact on you, dropping like flies. Always loved Ska music and particularly The Specials, plus it was always good to hear someone singing in their own accent for a change and not a US one. They definitely caught the Zeitgeist of the Thatcher years. Hard to believe that he's gone. 'This town is coming like a ghost town' - indeed it is. RIP Terry.

Well said, had very similar thought after hearing the shocking news. I drove around my town in the night listening to The Specials after hearing the news. And their music suddenly felt different knowing the voice I was hearing has gone away. They were a big part of my youth n genuinely saddened to know he’s gone. Thanks Terry n The Specials for being a huge part of my life. RIP

Back in the day The Specials were mainstream but not a household name and were always there and almost taken for granted by us 'Northerners' where the SKA scene in my mind didn't really take off or was popular in the small northern towns. Then listening to their work again on Spotify circa 2010 to 2022 their music has always seemed quite fresh and unique, if you can find it on Spotify or one of your old CDs listen to their live performances, they were excellent and the crowd was going wild.

Rest in peace terry and thanks for some great music and making a dark time bright in the early 80s bringing black and white together by music ,God bless sir 😔🙏
RIP Terry. An absolute legend and music icon. Such a massive influence to me growing up as a young teenager. Loved the Specials and am very sad at todays loss ❤
Cried my eyes out when I got the news early hours of Tuesday morning here in London. Totally gutted. Terry was unbelievably good and pithy and just oh so fucking cool. I was a 19 year old, old school skinhead (anti racism) the first time I saw and met Terry at the Hope and Anchor pub in Islington, London back in the beginning. Did the first 2Tone Tour. Was there for the reunion at The Brixton Academy, London and again a few years later. Also saw the Fun Boy Three at the Hammersmith Palais, London back in '82. Dare I say it, the most emotionally attached to a band my adult life. Same age as Terry myself now. R.I.P Terry Hall.

Same mate except I never saw FB3 for some reason despite immediately copying the haircut much to the annoyance of my skinhead mates! We'd all got skins within a few weeks of Gangsters coming out. Saw them in 1980 but Brixton 2009 probably the best, certainly the most emotional, gig I've ever been too. RIP El Tel

@@AthelstanEngland Same as you about the Brixton gig. Went with my brother. Two middle aged bald skinheads with all the gear on. Levis 501 red tabs, Solvair Blackburn 11 hole boots, 1/4“ red braces [hanging down], White short sleeve Lonsdale t-shirt and Alpha Ind bomber jacket [sage green]. It was always those attention to details that made us skinheads the best. R.I.P Terry Hall 🤜🏻🤛🏻🏴

Play Terry's music Hugo. Shut your eyes and play it loud
Every now and again, an artist's passing has a profound effect on the generation that first fell in love with their genius, Terry was one of these, I'm still so very saddened, over a day after his passing, I've not been this upset at a celebrity death since Rik Mayall's untimely passing 8 years ago, I'm sure I'm not the only one...
A major part of the soundtrack to my teenage years. England was reeling under Thatcher. The Specials were a voice for the working class. Every word rang home. Never preachy, but alway poignant. RIP Terry Hall and Thank you🙏🏾

Age 19 in 1979 I played the specials over and over in my bedroom .This is the first time when a musician has died I felt like he belonged to us being the same age .2 tone was a moment in time and anyone whe grew up with it realises how lucky they were . Rip Terry .
R.I.P Terry Hall!! Xx 💖..you certainly were SPECIAL!! Thank You for the Wonderful Music you gave to us!! XxXxXxXx 💖
My heart aches & I feel very sad today. Many memories of certain space in time in which Terry's music meant so much. Rest in peace Terry & condolences to your family & friends.
Just listening to to the clips in this report just shows what fantastic catchy songs the specials produced, they were at the top in an era when the standard was incredibly high. Everything Terry touched with his genius was gold, fun boy three, colour field. You got dam good words and music when he was involved. Thanks for being such a great human, you will be missed.
We have lost an absolute British legend of music, a humble and lovely man. Fortunately had the chance to meet him once and had a chat with him. The first Specials album is still one of my favourites of all time. I was a skinhead hanging around in a school gang of skins and mods, blacks and whites when this album came out, we all loved it and played it non stop and the best thing about those times was were didn’t see each other as different we were just mates, following fashion and loving the 2 Tone scene. May you rest in peace Terry you will be sorely missed 😔
What a legend. A hero of mine who questioned peoples hate for each other for silly reasons like skin colour. As Terry would say, Love love love. We need more people like Terry in the world he will be very missed. R.I.P Legend
A special gift from God there's no other excuse for his talent and caring love 💕!
Loved the Specials. 🙏 RIP Terry.
"Enjoy yourself, its later than you think" -The Specials (Thanks Terry! You help me get through my teenager years with some self respect!)
Amazing singer who brought so much joy to us all especially with the special, and fun boy three. RIP Terry, and condolences to your Family, and friends gone but never forgotten 🙏🏾❤
Absolutely gutted by this... my idol back in '79 and relived it all again in 2009. Cambridge 1980 and Brixton 2009 still the two best gigs I've ever been to. RIP to a completely authentic guy. Thoughts with his family and close friends.
RIP lovely man and loved your music and The Specials, part of growing up! You will sorely missed 😢 ❤️

It is impossible to overstate the importance of Terry Hall. Drop the flags to half mast (permanently).
Sad stuff! One of my all-time favorite singers. This cat Terry Hall was an outstanding vocalist, and extremely unique in style, and sound. He was also a fashion icon with the SPECIALS. He played a huge impact on me as a collector and student of music. I was devastated upon hearing this horrible news. It's so sad as a middle-aged man, to see the musical heroes of my youth, passing away. RIP Terry Hall. The SPECIALS, and ska music will never be the same without you.
Terry, thank you for making Our Lips Are Sealed with Fun Boy Three a song that would make my darkest day brighter.
Shocked by the news, the Specials were apart of my childhood growing up, RIP Terry.

His solo albums are my fave. Check out the album ‘Home’.
My sister in law married aged 19 and had two kids quickly. If we sang Too much too young in her presence she'd go insane ! 😂 Seriously though its a sad loss here, too young. He should have had another 20 years
That is so sad. I loved Nite Club.

Terry Hall I heard the news At 4.30 a.m. exactly I knew it would hurt And it did so badly A voice that blew away the fluff of the 80’s A sincere stare And words that were rich and plenty I heard the news At 4.30 a.m. exactly I knew it would hurt And it did so badly An honesty that left you feeling less alone A life of pain etched in words that could have been my own I heard the news At 4.30 a.m. exactly I knew it would hurt And it did so badly I heard your voice And it rings in my head so beautifully I know it will stay, in the echo chamber Of my memory © David R Mellor 2022

You just didn't t see this coming. That fresh faced Rude Boy that popped into our lives on the TV back in the early 80s and we don't think of them or us as getting old, we were young strong and indestructible. Sad news for his fans and family . He kept his narky on the British Ska music scene. What a legend
