I did this and I’m a girl when I was in my 30’s. I stayed in a one room little shack for 3 days in a desert and I loved it. I slept like a baby and the solitude was great. I think God gave me the gift of solitude at a very early age, even though I had 5 siblings. I don’t even watch TV anymore and it was so easy to give up. I asked myself, ‘ would I watch this program with Jesus’ and I found out that most of the stuff on TV Jesus would find offensive. I do not miss it. I use KZread and internet for current events, church and world news and basically those snippets give enough to tell me if I have to search farther for truth. You get to know those you can trust and sometimes they even fall short, which is no surprise in the world we live in, but I have found to connect to God one needs silence. The further along the journey I have traveled the more I crave silence with God.

I’m old now but I’ve spent hundreds of nights alone in the woods since I was a kid. Slept like a log.

I live in rural New Brunswick. Our back yard is 10 acres of forest. Beyond that is 1000 acres or more forest. Deer, moose, porcupines, black bears, lynx are abundant. We are at least 45 minutes to the closest hospital. Every night is silent.. and remote

Growing up, we used to do powerless weekends, we cooked ate dinner and showered by 6pm Friday and nothing went back on until 4pm Sunday to cook dinner. Just doing that while still living in the house is a great starter to learning how to deal with yourself without, what was then, just the distraction of the tv, and learning to navigate without light in the dark for 2 nights. Eventually you can move to the outdoors as well once the kids get a little older.

As a woman I find it difficult to go alone anywhere. At my age I’m limited. I see older women in their 70’s in their vans and nothing bothers them I would try it once to see if I liked it but at my age I rather be at home. I love the outdoors I love the mountains. I will try it but I rather have company like my dog.

My oldest grandson went on a three day canoe trip to celebrate his graduation. But he’s been doing marine scouts for three years. Pius X schools are awesome! Deo Gratias!

Wilderness scary? No, that's where the disordered passions are gone and creation abounds. 😂snakes, coyotes, fire, no running water. I'm in a city apt and THAT'S scary to me after living rurally for 40 yrs. It's more of a challenge to be close to my God but He gives me graces to do so. Salve Maria 🙏

this is really great Fr Mark. On a side note, many of us struggle with pornography, and custody of the eyes. Being alone in the wilderness, with potentially strange creatures and weird sounds, is a great way to show a person what the eyes are for.

I claimed Croke Patrick a few years ago on the day of the pilgrimage, but ,when I got to the mountain it was evening time,and the people were coming down,I went up the mountain anyway thinking that there may be people still up there, but there was nobody only myself on the mountain, it was a special experience ,it lashed rain all night and was very windy,I slept on the stone's. And prayed a good bit ,next morning the view from the mountain over clue Bay was really spectacular, it was a great experience to be on the same mountain that Saint Patrick would have spent a lot of time there in Prayer.

We all will be soon forced to face something like this.

father as an Eastern Orthodox i can say you are doing a good job for Catholics to experience hermitism and solitude in nature, our monks follow the paths of Saint Anthony the Great in more extreme ways, fasting and eating what they can find. HOWEVER, Father Mark Goring, the first night is indeed scary, second is better, third, etc etc. But be aware that the Devil will come because this type of solitude brings you closer to God but also the temptations from the Devil comes. Some might crazy others might die. It is not an easy thing. Cautiousness and preparedness is a must. Our hermits, just like St Anthony, St Macarius, etc etc had mentors. For someone without experience it can be a deadly game. The forces of Evil control the world including the forests. It is a dangerous place, not for everyone

I did a 3 day 2 night backpacking trip solo. I didn't have any problems until my tarp collapsed from the strong wind and had to start hiking an unfamiliar trail alone in the darkness and keep an eye out for mountain lions.

Dealing with demons in the woods, will also be a true test of your faith.

Spent all last summer in a hammock! In the fall a bear started being to comfortable around my camping setup stealing food! I then slept in the car for a few weeks till I got rid of the problem!

Praise be Jesus Christ! This is a great idea for everyone, not just young people. We all need to practice being uncomfortable, we take many things for granted.

Dear heart, I understand your predicament, especially wit her your digs (dog lover from my earliest years) and implore you to make the effort: your pet(s) WILL survive, as will you-and both you will be better for the experience!

Times for going on such trips have passed. Now it is very dangerous.

Ha ha ha! It’s so funny how mere sounds can so unnecessarily fill us with fear. I clearly remember the first year I was in the seminary hearing the most spine tingling sound outside my window. 😱 We all had rooms (“cells”) of our own and mine was on the 4th/top floor. At about 2AM in the morning I was awoken to the sound of a baby screaming just outside my window. I was convinced it was Satan 😈 coming to frighten me. I almost ran out of my room in a panic but turned to frantic prayer instead. I shared my harrowing experience with my neighbors the next morning and they laughed so hard they almost couldn’t breathe. They explained that it was simply some alley cats 🐈 🐈 that were fighting and that the sound carries pretty far because of the shape of the land behind our building. 🤦🏼…so embarrassing. NOW I know that my guardian angel 👼 is by my side every moment, enlightening me with the truth, guarding me from harm, leading me forth into battle and guiding me when I need direction. I have no need to fear from any evil because I know that the least of all of the angels 👼 is stronger than even the greatest of all of the fallen angels 👿(Satan) because all of the blessed angels are constantly gazing upon the face of God. I pray to my guardian angel 👼 often; express my gratitude and trust and ask for help (especially in how to worship well). You should too. He is the best friend you will ever have. We will never understand the depth of the love that our angels have for us, maybe not even after our death (because their angelic nature is different from ours), but we should always try to grow in gratitude for it. I also pray to my wife’s guardian angel 👼 and my kids’ and my godchildren’s to continually guide, enlighten, protect, and help convert them. 📣📣📣Don’t miss any opportunity to accept and make use of the abundant graces that The Lord ❤️‍🔥showers upon us‼️ PRAISED BE JESUS CHRIST!

I enjoy that you bring so much enthusiasm and joy to the practice of faith, thank you! As a parent I would rather my young men not go and stay in the woods for a couple of nights alone to practice their faith without technology. Although, I rejoice at their dedication, I do not want them taught to be reckless with theirs or anyone else’s soul. Could we update that to just turn the cellphone off for the duration or go with a buddy. Please and thank you!

I sleep the best when I camped. Rain? Lull’s me to sleep. But I was conceived in a tent! And stopped camping at age 60. But never alone, as I’m a woman and I always had friends with me. I had my own tent, so I had privacy, but I’d never camp alone today that’s for sure…

I live alone in the mountains. Two years ago I decided to get rid of the internet. Got a light phone without the internet, got rid of my computer. Did really well for a while but became afraid of the loneliness and have gotten my computer back. For me it is too hard to be holy and have the internet. Tomorrow I will get rid of it again. It will be hard but your quote convinced me.

Dear Father very important you tell these men to prepare before going out into the wilderness. They need to inform family or close relative or friend the area they are going before they go and yes they need their phone for unexpected emergencies. Unfortunately these days people are just killed and disappear taking a walk in a park they usually hike. The three men surfers who recently who camped out together in a remote area in Mexico were all murdered bc someone wanted to steal their tires off their truck and they dumped the bodies of these men in a well. A search party found their dead bodies 3 days later with another dead body that had been dumped there before they were. God wants us to use common sense and reason things out before running out into the wilderness to try and find God. Silent Retreats are offered at various rustic places run by monasteries thru out the world. Jesus is right there present in the Holy Eucharist. A silent retreat is a wonderful way to encounter Our Lord too. No guy has to run away to the unknown wilderness to be manly or to find God. If the guy goes to a Eucharistic Adoration God is waiting for Him there.

Amen! Absolutely Unless you are trained and armed do not go overnight in the woods alone. Go on retreat. You can spend the night alone with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and armed with your rosary. Today the world has gone bonkers. Be prudent

I remember sleeping in the wilderness in a tent and kept hearing things moving about. I nearly jumped out of my socks when I heard what sounded like a turkey run past my tent making gobble gobble noises. It was not my best sleep. Some forest creatures are nocturnal, I discovered.

If traveling to the wilderness, or even camping, remember to bring some holy water and sprinkle it around the area where you’ll be sleeping. Also be sure to bring some blessed object with you such as a rosary or holy metal, as well as the Word of God, of course.

If you live near National Forest there are fire lookouts you can access. Very remote and one step up from a tent.

Who is Christy Rey?

Normally I'm afraid to hear the next warning, but since I just had some ice cream on another HOT HOT day, bring it on and scare me, I'm ready...

We camped as children our only vacation. We did have radio and my dad played guitar. I guess we never were scared. I guess a bit different but we felt rich in nature.

We are natural beings in an eastern and unnatural world. I work the Darién Jungle and sleep like a baby, why? Because, if children can reach our camp, I can sleep! Yes, silence affords hearing God. Nature is were he is and within us all.
