Territorial Aggression In Sunfish

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I've made some changes to the 75. I took the big piece of driftwood out because I couldn't find a way to weigh it down without the tacky fishing line. Anyways, I'm doing something different with this video. It's a little more informative than my other videos tend to be. I'm giving a little advice on how to handle aggression when it comes to keeping sunfish. This advice probably works for SA/CA cichlid keepers as well, since the two types of fish have similar temperaments. Anyways, hope you find this video useful. Thanks for watching and feel free to rate, comment, and subscribe for more videos.

I had these in a tank in my office. The temp stayed consistently around 70-72 year round.

The largest one should be removed and the smaller ones kept awhile since they are similar in size. That would probably end the aggression. In ponds it isn't a big problem because the smaller ones have an entire pond to move to when chased. Here they are basically stuck, being stressed out by the big one all day, with nowhere to go. What type of fish are the long skinny ones?

+HighlanderNorth1 I had a number of problems in this tank. Most of them were the result of poor planning and not enough structure. I've actually changed this tank around a few times and just recently went back to keeping longears. The skinny fish in the video are creek chubs. Not very colorful but fun to feed. They swim like torpedoes. If you want I'm going to be making another video this week of my new longear tank and I'll explain why this time around it will be different. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching.

Btw what can you do about yellow glare in the water I have recently put a big peace of driftwood in it :0! I did first put it under the hot water and the men where I did get it from said that he had cooked it out recently :)

These are longear sunfish. They don't get near as big as bluegill do. These only reach a max size of 6-8 inches (15-20cm). As far as the yellow water, that's from the tannins that leech out of the driftwood. That'll just take some time and water changes to get that out. Eventually it will stop leeching and the color will go back to normal. In this tank, that big piece of driftwood on the right side took a while. I actually soaked it in a tub for several months before putting it in my tank. It's still not completely water logged though, it had to be screwed into a piece of stone to completely sink, and it still leeched some tannins into the water when I first put it in. Also, the color temp of your lights can have something to do with the tinting of your tanks color. Color temps affect which colors get highlighted in your tank. I just put an actinic light on this tank to bring out the blues in the sunfish.

Matje De Zeeuw It's all about color temperature with the lights. I don't know what's available in Europe. Anything 10,000k or higher will have the bluish tint to it. If you want to grow plants, look for something that is around 6500k. If you have a yellow tint, I think your lights are somewhere below 6500k. I'm not sure the exact temp range for yellow but if you want the blue look for 10,000k lights or higher. That's where you'll get the bluer tints.

Matje De Zeeuw With those fish the only plants you might be able to use are probably anubias plants. They don't require any special lighting so you can use whatever lights you want and they'll still do fine. Anubias are really slow growing plants but they have thick leaves so they may be ok. If I were you I would get lights that would accent the fish colors. Get the bright white bulbs or something with a hint of blue in them. I don't know if you can get these there but Finnex Monster Ray led lights are made to bring out the color in your fish. Check out Dahlyvh's channel to see those lights on his discus.

When they’re mature it’s really easy, the females have a much duller color pattern. The males get larger and have a larger opercular flap.
