Puerto Escondido surf has been pumping all month. The biggest swell since May hit on September 1st courtesy of an ongoing run of Southern Hemi swell. This swell provided epic XL surf at the Mexican Pipeline.
The opening scene of this episode features Matt Bromley with the wipeout of the swell which you probably saw on Surfline. It takes a lot of courage when surfing Puerto Escondido and this swell showed how violent and rewarding waves can be at Playa Zicatela.

That's my favorite break to watch other people surf. You'd never catch me out there on a big day anymore.... i'm too old for that kind of gnarliness.

Look at the close out at 1:50. I got out of position once and had one of those break about 6 feet in front of me. It was the biggest wall of pain I have ever seen. Bounced me off the bottom and held me down for 20-30 seconds. Possibly the worst beating and most sheer terror I have ever had in the ocean. There is something uniquely terrible about the inevitability of one of these about to break on top of you. It was just so much damn water coming at me.

Watched Nathan Florence video recently, most likely this swell. Him and his bro Ivan caught and successfully made some nice rides out there. Goes to show wave knowledge and skill shows in a heavy beach break like this.

Aloha 🙂

Nope. If I'm rembering what day that was, it was a ~6 foot primary swell, and a ~4 foot secondary swell. Other places along the coast were hitting 8-10ish. This place works kind of the same as mavericks, where the sea floor topography funnels the energy into one spot, and then it slams into the beach and does this.

Beach break at PE a big turd wave. Dangerous and almost impossible to make unless you’re very lucky or a shoulder hopper. I discovered PE in 1971. Road the point left for three days. Just be and a giant ray. Great memories but the beach break sucks hide titty. 😊

yes m8 completely agree, people are dying all over the world at the top spots , and it seems to me that people are seeming to take more risk as time goes on, many years ago i did the same at 15 years old surfing 15 to 20 ft when the idea of jet skis being there for the safty hadnt arrived yet, and i nearly fu**ed up big time and i was lucky to be here to tell the story but it gave me an even bigger respect for the sea, and i was experienced having been in the water and on a board since 5 years old , now i just watch in ore that these guys have taken it to another level !! hope they are all safe to surf another day !!

@@carplife5225 Yeah I came close too back in the day of no jetskis. And nobody on the beach. Bad move, but young and cocky. Was Surfing a storm swell and lost the board trying to get out after my 3rd wave. Took about 45mins to swim in and I kissed that sand because I was using the last of what I had left of my energy. Board was fine bobing around 100m away on shore.
