Terrible At Bodywork? High Build Primer Saves You Time And Money! IT'S SPRAY ON BODY FILLER

Ойын-сауық

Final piece of the 1955 Chevy Nomad puzzle goes together. The car has been hoodless for 10+ years. I got the car with 2 rotten fenders, no hood, no lights, no grill, no core support ect. Luckily a few years ago I swapped my 55 Chevy 2 door sedan's front clip out for a fiber glass tilt unit.
This left behind a relatively rust free front clip. In this episode a almost 70 year old, original hood get's a second chance at life. I bring it down to bare metal, rust treat the surface then prep for high build primer.
High build primer is one of the absolute best products on the market to help with body work. It is essentially spray on body filler. It's fills highs, lows and all the little scratched left from sand paper. Once hardened it can be sanding to a perfectly smooth surface, that's perfect for paint.
With the hood "restored" I bolted it on fit the front chrome for the perfect look. This car is REALLY coming together!

Just a helpful suggestion - keep your gun square or parallel to the surface, the gun is at too much of an angle. A couple things happen, lesser amount of expensive product goes on the intended area and you end up spitting the product across the other side of the panel causing dry areas. If you flip your wrist at the end of the panel then you lose more expensive product and do not get a consistent mil thickness. Try one more thing, get your gun closer to the panel, but also cut your pressure a bit and read the can, if it says do a 50% overlap then do it. Mindset of a robot, gun sq. to panel, correct overlap, spray pattern adj. for gun distance, proper prod. mixing and air pressure. Super simple, add concentration and forget spray can mentality. This may sound like a bunch of basic bullshit but there may come a time when you actually want to turn out a respectful paint job. If you don't train yourself on the "looks good enough" because I hate bodywork thinking, in the future when you may actually want a " Damn that looks good " paint job you'll already have the skills to do it. Sorry these little suggestions get long but sometimes trying to explain the basics can. Hopefully there are some of you that can also benefit from this basic info.

Agree with @Benchman13's comments, but a couple more things: That wrist flick at the end is splashing the paint into the vent hole. Keep it as level as you can and don''t shake it and that won't happen. Robot is right, just drop down and reverse direction, no drama. You can also get no paint when you don't have enough air volume. I see 3/8" hose, so you're at risk to start. There are two kinds of QR fittings for 3/8" and one of them only has 1/4" throughput -- yup, the cheapest ones. I learned the way you will that this isn't enough for HVLP. Make sure you use the fat ones (you can tell by eyeballing the inside diameter) and you'll have enough volume, or better still go to 1/2" hose, but you still have to connect to the gun unless you screw on the hose. With enough volume, you'll get a real fan and lay down more product faster. Finally, don't spend money on "Guide Coat". You'll get the same results with any flat paint (gloss ones will gum up your paper). I use flat black from Home Depot, sells for $.99 a can below the border.

Seems like the more you use a spray gun you enjoy it more & more .Very rewarding to spray something one color becomes more interesting the more you do it and in return you get less lazy with bodywork and painting. You do realize its really not rocket science and that hard at all as you always say,HA! Great Job looks nice all one color !You are an Inspiration!

The first thing I do with any spray gun is make sure the vent is open, one of the biggest reasons for poor spray gun performance. I usually will take a 1/4 inch drill bit and open the vent(leave the 2nd vent alone or use a smaller drill bit) and open it up. I've gotten a few guns because people thought their gun is junk--it just couldn't breath!

Here's a Hot Rodder hood headache story. I put a v8 radiator in the front V6 position on my 57 Bel Air, which jammed the hood against the radiator cap. I had to cut a square flap to relieve the jam, so welding that hole is one of my upcoming projects. It's always something when you are hot rodding.

One thing to add is allow time for shrinkage because it IS going to shrink. put some left over high build in a paper coffee cup and let it sit for a couple weeks. you will see shrinkage . Over a couple months its even more evident. All in all, it is a great product. Best I have used is called "Featherfill". It actually is resin with a fibreglass type hardener.

  • @glennnickerson8438

    @glennnickerson8438

    2 жыл бұрын

The only problem with Featherfill is that it can crack easy or can "bridge" and blister. Like someone told me once it is like a hard candy shell I used it on one of my projects and had issues that I'm snakebit now. Originally it was recommended for Corvettes and works good on them because they are fiberglass and expand different than a metal car. If you do use it, make sure it goes over epoxy primer and not self etching primer.

Filler is lighter, quicker and will last 50 years as long as you keep it covered with paint and it will not crack if mixed properly and put on nor more than 1/4 thick. You guys just didn't know back then how it would hold up. Now we know better. bondo will far outlast most cars many times over.

Just some friendly advice, your pattern and overlap is good, but you need to square up your gun better. You are getting a tail at the bottom of your fan, this is because your gun is on a 45, instead of 90 degrees to the panel. I have been a painter for over thirty years, also, I never close my vent cover, less paint in the gun allows this, good job , really enjoy your channel, from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦👍

Problem with high build primer is that to often people misuse it as filler. It's really only intended to fill moderate scratches. Heavy buildup will shrink over time, sharing every sin it was meant to cover. Good luck with the rest of the project. Should be a fun car to knock around in.

Great job on the hood and even better job on fitment and alignment of the front end. This car is really coming together.

That was the missing piece of the puzzle the hood really brought her together excellent job my friend. Got to admit I was one of the ones that kind of told you to junk that thing at the beginning of this build you definitely proved me wrong. Your love for the tri fives really shows through on this one. I love it.
