I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam 1968-69. There were a few times during that one year tour that I had a forward observer attached for a few days (an artillery observer who could call in accurate fires). But most of the artillery we called in was relayed to the company who related it to battalion who relayed it to regiment who relayed it to Division who relayed it to the Vietnamese for approval. Unless it was a free fire zone, it could take an hour or more to get an artillery request approved. If I didn't have a forward observer attached to my platoon, then I had to call in the artillery. The problem with both the forward observer and me is that we were using out of date French maps from before the 1950's and they were inaccurate. I was lucky to know where I was within 1,000 yards (.9 Km) and 2,000 yards (1.8 km). I would always request the first few rounds be smoke so I could adjust from there if where I thought I was was off. I remember one time I called in an artillery mission with an initial smoke round. I was looking to my front an the round landed 2,000 yards to my rear. I would have given my left arm for GPS, an accurate map, and a laser designator. Ditto close air support. We only had a general idea where we were in calling in close air support. The Air Force dropped at a very high altitude, the Navy at a much lower altitude, and the Marine Corps air support at incredibly low altitudes. But in each case, the pilots needed to know where our most front line was. We would pop yellow smoke, but the enemy would also pop yellow smoke. So the pilot didn't know where the actual Marine front positions were until we told him which was ours. If you ever saw the movie "We Were Soldiers" then you know how easy it was to make tragic mistakes. I didn't call in many close air support missions myself, but one was so close that the shrapnel from 500 pound bombs was cutting down good size trees next to me. If we had had the technology today back in 1969, North Vietnam would have been toast in 30 days, and we would not have lost 68,000 men and women in a 10 war for nothing. BTW, I was a Marine company commander in April 1975 participating in the evacuation of Saigon when the US surrendered to North Vietnam. Darkest day of my life. Tip of the hat to the Ukrainians for using drones to adjust artillery when in 1969 we could only use artillery on what we could see in front of us. I'm 76 now. I served 3 years in combat. If I could, I'd still volunteer to fight as a Marine in combat, but they won't let me. I'm still a Marine today. Once a Marine; Always a Marine.

My uncle Curtis Lawson was shot down in July 68. He wasn't captured but his co pilot was and taken to Hanoi till he was released in 73

I noticed the vertical crack above the head of the reclining soldier at 7:20 . That tells me something about the clay content . I know from primary school lessons that Ukrainian soil is the world's best soil with the topsoil layer being measured in feet ,, for our soil it's inches except for Queensland's southeast quarter ,, . Long long time ago there was an enormous volcanic eruption in Ukraine region which created the mineral rich black soils , south east Queensland is similar story . Looks like in donbass region of Ukraine that the volcanic origin soil is dwindling down somewhat but is still present . Bottom black mud from the black sea has been used for therapeutic purposes since a long time ago . Anyway i ain't a geologist but I've done heaps and heaps of digging by h a nd in seach of gold and other stuff .

It's a lot of killing we see happening. Is it necessary? Those drones could on occasion perhaps drop leaflets into the trenches to instruct the young Russian conscripts the protocol for how they can surrender safely. Many of the young Russian conscripts don't know how to safely escape from the clutches of the Russian military machine . There are some captured Russians who have chosen to join the Ukraine military. They could surrender to Ukraine bringing an operational military vehicle along with themselves for Ukraine . The soldiers who committed atrocities in Bucha and Irpin were from Buryatia .

Great video in that it shows that ruzzia still has the ability to counter fire, even if it is sporadic. At least in this video the true fact that UKR soldiers are still at risk from some elements of the oppositions generally inept military's counter battery fire. One thing I noticed was how the commander asked two guys to go sit in the other foxhole. That way if there were to be an accurate hit then only 2 would be hurt and not all four. Great tactics and that's why UKR will win, they value their soldiers and citizen's lives more than the canon fodder of pootins 'glorious federation'.

@@the_hate_inside1085 Yes but if one shell hits one foxhole only 2 are lost. But if 4 are in one hole and it is hit then ALL are sadly lost. It is somewhat cynical to say he would have sent them to their deaths. In war any momnent could be your last. If this had happened the UKR commander would have no doubt felt terriblble. Ruzzians leave their dead and wounded behind. Very few have the comradeship to help a fallen fellow.
