Terminator Cobra FAQ: Know before you buy

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Terminators are solid cars. No major mechanical issues, no electrical nightmares- very simple. No expensive computers that fail, etc. Know that all cars have quirks about them. When buying a car, it's good to know the pros and cons. This video is created to help you know what you would want to know before buying to help you decide if these pros and cons are what you are okay with before buying.
I’ll keep adding some things here in the comments as I think of them.
1.The 3rd brake light is led and will commonly crack near the screws- some say the screws are too tight from the factory.
2.Fuel rail pressure sensor can cause the car not to run

    Good Info! My 03 was a Nov 02 build, I bought with 25 miles on it(9 I put on it since I was a dealership Tech and fell in love) so, got the fun "tick". When I went to the 3.4 Whipple, seems the 25+ psi and load, the lower pulley broke, so Metco came into play and lowered the boost too, I could list the fun times, the passenger seat squeak fix, A few tricks I learned.

    Awesome video and super informative!! I've decided to sell my 03 Mustang GT after owning it for 8 years cux I've just gotten the itch to have a Cobra now. Friends pressure just sell it but hard cuz I bought it cash at 19yrs old my dream car since I was 8yrs old, taught me a lot of cars and boosted my career as an auto tech, dumped $$ on performance running 320HP but that's another story. My Q is (& Ik it's something not commonly asked and silly) but I've run several headlights on the GT with HID's where they melted the housings and I knew this happen because I just don't like any of the projector headlights they make for mustangs. Yes I ran 8k 55w ballasts, 6k 55w, and then stuck with 6k 35w so they'd stop melting them and avoiding Driving at night. So I want to run HID's on the cobra when I get it to the ones with silver turn signal markers(not projectors and I want a black cobra) but I don't want to buy projectors and also don't want to keep buying new housings all the time. Are the stock bulbs Halogen? Or HID? And do u know of any good brand for HID's?

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    6 жыл бұрын

    XxBEFALLENxX I have HIDs in the mach 1 and stock halogens on the cobra. My suggestion would be to look at some LED Setups that don’t require a ballast and the likelihood of melting anything. SW lights seem to have good things, but I don’t have any of their products

    axle nuts should have a cotter pin to keep it from loosening

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    biggdaddy blade works Unfortunately the cotter pin is not always lined up to where the nut ends up when torqued to spec, so it will loosen to that point. It will keep the nut from coming off entirely, but won’t guarantee bearing loss

    biggdaddy blade works Several IRS cobra owners have lost the rear, driver side bearing. It's common for the nut to self-loosen as the wheel spins in the direction on the driver side to loosen the nut whereas the passenger side will tighten it as it spins (similar to the crank pulley and it's need to be reverse thread). The axle nut cotter pin does not prevent the nut from loosening unfortunately

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    I do not know and exact date, and it may be hard to track down. They started to phase the new heads in towards the end of 03 production, which is when the 10th anniversary models were produced, so those cars have been reported to have some of the 9 thread heads- and I heard of one case where a guy claimed to have 4 thread on one side and 9 on the other and he said the car had never been in for repair work. Danny Johnson’s Garage you know Danny I know people say things just to try to get over on people on here. But my dad taught me you don’t get ahead in life that way. Anyway I just wanna tell ya. I had a new 98 gt and then a 2002 gt. Well I traded the 98 in on a 2000 Roush 360 R. It had the 3550 5 speed. I loved that car but traded in on 2002 gt. Mistake. Then I traded the 2002 for the terminator. T-56. Eaten m -112. A lot of power. You know. I may just give it to my son idk. But with all of that nonsense. I think I would take a 4.6 2 valve with manly rods and forged pistons. 3650 with good clutch is all I need. Me and my wife are looking at houses right now. So I,am kinda in a not sure what I should do stage right now. Hey I have watched some of your videos. Keep it Danny. Just wanted you to know I’m not a con man. Keep up the good videos.

    Thanks Danny… Here goes.. I have lots of questions.. Thanks for great videos - I am Mustang poor as they say.. My 1st was A 1978 4-cyl Mustang II - I wanted the Black Cobra II - Dad said no.. you get the silver and red 4 Cyl. But I was hooked from then on. (Needless to say it took me 32 years before I found a nice King Cobra.) The Terminator cars always seemed to escape me - But I kept looking. I watched all your videos on the 03 vs 04, things to consider etc.. I ended up buying a 04 Convertible due to the difference in the heads. It’s a Mystichrome with 45K miles. I looked for one with not really low mileage.. because I did not want one that was sitting forever… but not a high mileage car either. I also looked for as close to stock as I could find.. just in hopes that it was not abused too much and so that I could upgrade it from a base line.. I do have an SLP Catback exhaust as well as an upper pulley kit. Best I can tell (THANKS to your vid’s again).. it’s a 70MM / 100 MM pulley set. (I did not pull the belt off… but that’s pretty close on the 70MM measurement). I have no idea if it has any sort of tune. I test drove an 03 before I found this one and before watching your video. The 04 is much stronger to me, but that 03 was ran hard and put up wet ! that’s my baseline.. So the Question is.. what would you do 1st ? - Do you have a list of “recommended upgrades”? That is my main concern. I want to change out items that are known weak points (stock idlers etc) and add any needed gauges, items etc..to guard against problems etc... But - I don’t want to replace something and then upgrade the same item later in another needed upgrade. I would like it to be dependable to play with.. but not prone to break every time you do. I know you can make really great HP with these engines.. but where would you say the line is where you go from dependable to breakable ? 500HP - 600 HP ? - Hope that makes sense ! I look forward to your input.. MAYBE a future video on “Bullet Proof Recommended Upgrades” down the road? I volunteer my Terminator ! Thanks again for a great channel - You have inspired me to make a video on each of my cars to share online with others. Many Thanks in Advance for Your Input - 1SG (R) M.

    King78Cobra Very cool. Sounds like you got an awesome cobra! My first suggestion would be to get a wideband gauge so you can monitor the air fuel ratio. That will tell you how it’s been running and assure it’s not running lean. You will want to see 11.2 or less on the gauge to know your tune is rich enough. (during wide open throttle, and 14.7 at idle or light driving) Next, I would get an aeroforce interceptor gauge or the 2 gauge setup (I have a video on that too- EASY gauge, just plugs into the OBD2 port). That gauge will tell you a ton of things you’ll want to see like the charge temp, volts, etc. As part of the interceptor gauge, pay close attention to the alternator/volts. My friend lost his engine to a lean condition and the alternators on the terminators fail often. You’ll see my video on the mechman alternator with big 3 upgrade. Fuel pressure goes hand in hand and should also be monitored on the aeroforce gauge or a mechanical one. I believe the aeroforce will simply read if the car is asking for pressure vs the gauge telling you what’s actually in the rail. ignition timing is good to monitor as well from the aeroforce gauge Purchase a spare fuel rail pressure sensor (frps). They go out often and leave you stranded I would recommend keeping the stock lower pulley with the cage. Otherwise, a pulley only cobra is nearly indestructible if monitored correctly. My cobra makes just about 600 even to the tires and it will last virtually forever that way- I think that’s a safe number- but also it depends on habits with the car. Avoid any 5th or 6th gear freeway pulls, and consider a head cooling mod at the point you ever change the clutch. Get a 36mm socket and check the driver side axle nut to be tight at each oil change- the way the wheel spins on the driver side can loosen the nut over time and start to ruin the bearing I would consider a boost a pump, ngk tr6 plugs gapped to about .030 (I have videos on that too) Don’t ever let the axles hop when accelerating- let off as soon as you feel they are

    I'm about to buy a cobra , and I'm worried about the piston melting due to no flow out of the driver side head, when i pick the car up im going to have to drive the car 5 hours . I'll be highway driving 2500 rpmish, can someone please pm me and tell me if this is a major way to cause piston melting. Thanks

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    Mike Mcneill The piston will not melt under that situation. It will melt if the car is at 150+mph for more than 5 minutes full boost and the alternator fails. Just driving without boost won’t hurt a thing. Boost comes on with throttle position, so 6th gear cruising at 2,500 rpm will do no harm.

    The car looks pretty clean, even bringing up small details like broken clips for carpet floor mats. They mention small scratches on the bumper and such- it’s hard to tell unless you see it in person. The walk around sounded pretty good. The next step would be driving it. It’s hard to travel, but that’s a big commitment. I wouldn’t purchase it without driving it. Without looking up close in person it’s hard to say if anything had been modified and returned to stock. Looks stock other than the snake in the grill, exhaust, and the wheels (which he said you get the originals with the sale). Everything looks really good. Stock lower crank pulley, the engine looks stock. Original floor matts. I think it’s a good car and the price is fair. $23.5 is well what it’s worth. I wouldn’t go lower if I were him.

    Danny, I need some help. I found a 03 sonic blue for sale. The seller claims to make around 800 hp. The only mods I know are an mmr block bored over,a kenne bell mammoth black blower, built heads (didnt say whether stock heads or not) cammed (not sure what cam is in it),mcleod twin disc clutch, and a billet flywheel.It also has some fule system work. 60k on the body, 3k on the build. All that was done to the suspension was it being lowered, and the IRS has only upgraded half shafts. It also has a full exhaust.The owner did not say that he upgraded anything else, including the t56. He wants 27k. What are your thoughts? Im thinking that I would definitely have to sink quite a few dollars into it to make it safer.

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    I’m always a bit leary on those who put a car back together and immediately sell it. My brother has an mmr600 block in his bulllitt and it’s held up, but mmr does not have the best reputation for taking time to properly assemble and torque things down- doesn’t mean it’s bad, but not the best option. With that much power on a non-factory assembled engine, as well as other mods like cams I’d really want to see the car in person, perform a compression test, see how it drives, if it smokes, take a borescope and LOOK at the pistons (through the spark plug holes) for any signs of the pistons having burn marks from running lean or speckles from detonation and NOT pay $27k because the original value of the car is not there with an aftermarket engine. Anything done to the car should be a bonus for buying it, not a reason to pay top dollar. I have videos on compression tests if you’re interested. In perfect shape with everything checking out I’d offer $22k max. People don’t typically make 800hp for the car to sit and being it’s already went through an engine shows it’s likely been beaten. 3,000 miles could be many many times down a 1/4 track. Did he upgrade the oil pump and tensioners? tons of other details that are a “who knows” scenario. You want it from the guy who dumped a ton of money into it, not bare bones replaced what broke

    Madtwos ! A 2004 model is your best bet, but you may be after a color made in 2003z It’s hard to say until you pull a plug to see how many threads (or crawl under it and get the casting number at the back of the cylinder head). My twin brother has four 4Vs two are 2003 and the other two are 2004. He got the better heads on all 4 cars by luck. The 10th anniversary is most likely to have the 9 thread heads. • @TheCohenGarage

    @TheCohenGarage

    6 жыл бұрын

    EAbraham.R I’m no expert, but what I’ve seen with that it is an aftermarket header thing. When you take away the restriction that headers give, you’re losing some of the back pressure barrier. Thus the overlap where the exhaust valve is still open allows for more air to escape. That’s how it was explained to me. I also heard not to worry because you will still be marking the same or better power and in most cases it’s negligible or non existent in the amount of loss

  • @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    @dannyjohnsonsgarage

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, as EAbraham.R said, boost is a measure of restriction, so you will have less restriction and make more power. It’s like breathing through a straw and then giving you a bigger straw to breath through- you’ll push more air with least restriction, so win win
