There is one enormous feature of M8 that might not seem big or obvious but it runs out of SD card. All samples are streamed - there is no "RAM" for samples. Thanks to that not only you can have stupidly long samples but more importantly they load instantly. Also projects are loaded instantly and even you can preview another project without loading it first. AMAZING. Also it's worth mentioning that this thing is resampler's dream. Not only you can resample anything, export to stems etc, but there is shortcut to resample the patterns at cursor position. Also, like in ableton you can save just project file or export all connected sampes as "bundle" to new location. Those are just some small quality of life things that MOST groveboxes's manufactures don't even think about. It is dream box made by tracker artist that actually uses it and it shows.

What I think makes the M8 special is that the software and user interface both are extremely optimised. It has such a strong community, every little thing is being ironed out. The result is a super smooth experience, no lasting bugs and a razor sharp workflow. This device is unique cause it can truly get you into flow.

Keep in mind that most of the interface is "borrowed" from other projects that are open source; as such many people for many years refined the workflow and everything else around it. That is the beauty of open source projects in the end: someone make something, others work on it to improve it, instead of profit, everyone benefit. Kudos to the person making this device for putting together a bunch of different projects, and make a cohesive package, which is not an easy feat in itself.

@@spdycar13 It depends on how you approach music creation. If you are more interested in performance, trackers might get frustrating. For composition though, you have granular control over how and where your notes are placed, triggered, and behave. Tracks are not instrument specific, so you can easily switch instruments in a phrase (per note if desired). I am not good at performing or playing, but I want to create music. Once you get used to how the menus navigate on the M8 and how to build a song, the interface eventually dissolves behind muscle memory and you can place and tweak notes, synth settings, FX, automation, etc almost as quickly as you can think it. The most valuable thing for me is having a pocketable, battery-operated groovebox with instant-on capability with me literally at all times.

Love my M8, had the Model:01 and now the Model:02 and can't rate them highly enough. It's the only thing I need to make music with and it fits in my pocket, the output is super high-quality. My Deluge is awesome, so is my OP:1 but I've not used them at all since getting the M8. I think people are put off by how weird the interface looks but after an hour with one you realise it's actually really simple and super-fast to navigate around which is half the reason they're so fun, because your brain is locked in to making music and not how to apply an effect or which menu something is in etc.

That said, the ability to stack multiple effects and conditional stuff onto each note, mix instrumentation on single tracks and the sheer flexibility of composition on the M8 is a big draw

Nice video and I appreciate the reflections on why someone would use this: to focus. I'm currently evaluating the Polyend Tracker Mini and I'm having a similar experience. It's a slightly more tedious workflow compared to, say, an MPC, but on the other hand I have the Mini with me, which makes all the difference. A built-in battery and mic mean I can pick it up and use it whenever. I even took it with me on a one-week vacation trip to Crete and was able to finish two new tracks while on vacation. That would *never* have happened with a Syntakt or an MPC, simply because they're too big and bulky to even consider packing for a trip like that. The M8 mk2 sure looks like a great alternative to the Mini, but for me it's about availability too: the M8 is nowhere to be found in Sweden and the Mini is easy to come by. 😊

Only 3 synths for 8 tracks is limiting. And no battery. And Copy-note approach (should change every pattern sound if want to change sound). Otherwise it was almost perfect 🤣

For the non-midi questions… - I’m not quite sure what you mean by this, but maybe this will help answer your question? You can create large samples with slices and use Slice Mode “File”. This will set each note from C-1 on up to each slice. This can be used for drum kits or per-note resamples of instruments. There’s some piano multisamples floating out there, for example, one velocity but of each note. I’ve also seen people make drum kit multi-samples like this, and someone on the Discord made a fancy browser app to make the sticking together of such samples easy. These can be played by a Sampler instrument on any track. - Each track is mono-instrument, the synths are mostly mono but hypersyn can have its stereo spread turned up. Samples can be mono or stereo. - The keys are pretty clacky out of the box, being Kailh Choc Browns, but if you’re willing to swap key switches to LowProKB’s Ambient switches and add o-rings or stick foam atop the switch bodies you can get them fairly quiet.

-yes it can midi in out, audio in out, to your iphone, havnt personally used gadget, usually use AUM. -m8 is usb client, it has to be plugged into a host like a phone or computer, midi controllers are generally clients also, so probably not with a host adaptor. -yes you can put sliced samples (which can be drum kits or multisamples) on all 8 tracks, any track can be anything per step. -everythings stereo -maybe similar sound level on the keys to a ko2 ep133, the switches on the m8's can be swapped, if you want quieter ones or really clicky ones. Its probably the same as a laptop keyboard.

The M8 is sold directly by Dirtywave, so that's the only way to get it new (and import duties are killer, somewhere between €150-180). However if you don't need the Model:02, now that preorders are shipping the cost of a used Model:01 are coming down. You may be able to score one used for around €550-600. There is also an unofficial "Gear Bartering" thread on the Dirtywave Discord where people sell & trade. That would be the preferred way to find a used M8 in Europe.

I can say that the M8 is a nice device, and the new one is nicer as the screen is bigger and has some QOL to justify its existence. Although the internals are the same; the software is the same; so you should ask yourself if it is really worth getting one, when you have alternatives like the tracker mini, that just released an upgrade (the plus upgrade), which is free, is a software upgrade and not hardware, and add basically all that the M8 has on a device that has a bigger screen, bigger battery, more powerful hardware and stereo features from the get-go. I see the M8 as a fun instrument that is akin to the old gameboy; but sadly its price is crazy, and I get that some people say that it is fine for them; but with the same money you get a MPC one... or other used instruments, so price IS on the table as something that should be mentioned and compared to other instruments, in the same way we compare the OP-1 not only for how cool and innovative it is. As far as workflow; you can get a M8 headless and plug it to a portable console for a fraction of the cost and lose nothing of its feature; which is a cheaper option (without the stylish case, if you don't care about the looks, otherwise have fun spending another 300 dollars for the self contained unit); or even run something like LSDJ or piggytracker on a emulator, although the number of features is way lower than what the M8 offer, so not even apples to apples in terms of comparison, but the workflow is almost identical to make music, but you pay from 90 dollars to 200 dollars, depending from the portable console you buy, and you can also play retrogames on top of that, as bonus, if you decide to drop the tracker for music. Or you can get something like a uconsole from clockworkpi and run a full tracker on it, as those can run linux; but that is a more complex setup only for certain people, not for the "pick up and go" type of user for sure. I like the new model; great step forward but it is still hard as hell to get one, and that bring up prices on the grey market; so while it is great that there are advancements with the new hardware, it is also sad to see that the main issue of the M8 has not been addressed with the new model either.

I've got a tracker mini which I like but it's not perfect. I'm really curious about the m8 as on paper it does tick more boxes for what I'm looking for. I'm not that into samplers like whats on the mini but I like what I hear of the M8 synths. The Mini lacks some funtionality and polish but nothing they couldn't potentially fix with firmware updates. No idea if we'll ever get the tweaks I'd like. The big thing I worry about with the M8 is the interface (This was the big reason I opted for the mini). There are just so few buttons on the M8. The Tracker mini has many times the number of buttons and I sometimes feel it could just do with a few more. The m8 is a beautiful piece of hardware (And a great looking ui next to the Mini) and sounds great. If I get a bit of money it's sitting somewhere on my wishlist but I can see me splashing out soon.

A lot of us play live shows with M8's, It's one of the main things it was designed for. "glitching" is a pretty broad term. The launch version of the model 01 had an issue that some cable designs could short on the casing, easily resolved by putting tape/sticker or using your own cable. I bring my own cables to venues. That was changed in a hardware revision. Any Other glitch id have to put down to the sd card (under performing, to many files etc) . Feel free to jump on the official discord, will be able to sort it out for you in a couple minutes.

For the best groovebox ever made: Caustic 3. Granted, it's an Android app, the developer has given up so you can't get it through the app store any more and have to sideload it but it is, for me, not only one of the best music apps but one of the best music making devices ever made - portable, intuitive but deep, can hook up an interface and keyboard, 14 tracks, full fledged samplers, FM synth, drum machine, song mode, FX, mixing, mastering, it's even got a modular synth and a vocoder! And, running on an android tablet or phone, it's battery powered and has a speaker and microphone! I so wish someone would buy it and put it in a hardware box with some knobs because it would blow everything else out of the water. But sadly it's slipping off into history now and it's a crying shame 😢.

While it is definitely more cerebral and intentional than playing a guitar or piano for example, I’d liken it more to playing a musical video game or solving a puzzle than programming. It gets extremely fun and fast the more you get “better” at it and the results are always amazing. The effort required to make content like this in 2024 requires money from a company and/or free products that were expensive, we all need to get over this nit-picking about how biased everyone is. Synthube videos are all advertisements no matter what deals or agreements or exchanges or payments or lack of payments were made. Just accept it and, like with any commercial, make your own choice whether you trust the advertisement. Don't harass the actors in the commercials, they're just getting paid (or getting expensive stuff for free, etc) to do their job: influencing the public masses to buy stuff based on how good / convenient / trendy / new said stuff is.

Just out of curiosity, you are doing a good review and that should be appreciated, but when you say "Dirtywave sent me..." do you mean they sent it to you and you will send it back (which would certainly demonstrate your impartiality) or did they give you a $650 piece of gear that you keep? Because saying, "I don't get paid" wouldn't be true then, would it?

  • @MidlifeSynthesist

I always find it curious when people equate receiving gear at no cost to being the same thing as getting paid. For example: If I gave you a car for you to drive around and pick up people and drive around uber style, that would be a tool for a job right? You’d need to make money doing that job to pay your bills. But if I told you, no, I’m not giving you money for doing your job, but I did just gave you a 6000 dollar car which you might be able to sell a few years down the line after you’re done doing this job, would you consider that, “getting paid”? You’d probably not even take the offer unless you where really passionate about driving cars lol 😜 KZread gear economy is just like that. The truth is, free gear does not pay bills, they are tools for a job that takes many many hours of hard work to complete. I can’t sell the tool because I need to do my job, so if I ever do sell it, it will be probably be years from now at a much, much lower price than what it costs now. If you add the fact that to ship to my country I pay about 25% the cost of the gear in import taxes, then no, I don’t get paid. KZreadrs make their money with Google ads, affiliate links, sponsored videos and thanks to the support of amazing Patreons, but free gear is not an income, which is also why it’s a terrible idea to shill out for free gear (only leads to losing money and credibility). Sorry for the rant bud, thanks for watching the video and hope you gind gear that makes you happy🙌🏻

I think that in this debate, 'getting paid' and 'getting compensated' are often conflated. Did he get paid? No, he wasn't sent any money. Did he get compensated? Yes, he was sent a piece of gear that he gets to keep. Should he get compensated for creating a video like this that takes time and experience? I reckon so. Does the creator of the M8 have the time to create videos like this? Nope. As an audience member, I used to get a bit disgruntled and jealous, seeing all these synthfluencers getting all this 'free' gear, but now I'm like whatevs, they're doing the manufacturers a favour, good for them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@MidlifeSynthesist You certainly read a lot into what wasn't there, my friend. I love watching reviews, a few have helped dictate my purchases, and of course I know it's a lot of work to produce the videos and reviewers certainly deserve the payment in the form of the gear the reviewers get to keep (when and if they do). I think Benn Jordan was very honest about how it worked for him and was very sad when he got so hounded he ended Benn and Gear. A sad day. My point was about the language. I don't get how reviewers in so many different sectors (all say the same thing, "company X sent me product Y for review - no money exchanged hands and they have no say over the content of this review". That word "sent" is a bit odd. If I ask my mate about that new watch he has on his wrist it would sound weird if he said, "oh my girlfriend sent it to me". He'd probably say "gave it to me" or he'd use gift as a verb if he was American. It was about the language, not the fact you keep the gear. No problem at all about that. I guess I just liked Benn's openness about keeping gear he liked and passing on to other reviewers when he didn't need it, or back to the manufacturer - until then I hadn't really thought about it. Once again, that you keep the gear is fine, great even. The only time I hate reviewers is when Ricky Tinez convinces me again to buy another bit of gear!

  • @MidlifeSynthesist

    @MidlifeSynthesist

    7 күн бұрын

@@coresect thanks for the reply my friend. I’m also a victim of Ricky😂 I hadn’t really thought about the language in that way. To be honest the disclaimer I use is pretty much cloned from other KZreadrs I respect, like Ricky, and they would always disclose being “sent” gear, using that language. I guess it’s because it sounds professional. “Dirtywave gave me an M8 to review” sounds kind of strange (as strange as the reverse in your gf example lol). The reason I differentiate getting sent gear vs being paid is because sometimes companies send gear, and sometimes they commission videos. Those videos are paid for with actual money (usually the gear is also part of the equation), and the big difference for me is that those are usually showcases or demos and not actual reviews. The company asks you to make a kind of walkthrough/tutorial and to highlight certain features. It’s a completely different video and philosophy, and that’s why I make a big fuss over paid vs not paid for videos. When there is no payment (not a specific purpose for the video that the company is asking for), the video is 100% free form. Just to clarify so that what I’m saying here can not be taken in the wrong way. Commissioned, sponsored, paid for or not, my OPINIONS are never for sale. There is no gear or paycheck sweet enough for me to say something I don’t believe in in any video. My most valued asset is the trust you have in me. If I ever put that in jeopardy by lying, embellishing or omitting info or opinions of the gear I review, my channel becomes worthless, both to you and to the companies who send me gear, and that’s why I go to these lengths to clarify any doubts regarding the ethics involved here. Anyway, thanks for a civilized discussion and if my initial comment seamed harsh, it wasn’t my intention (as isn’t here either). Cheers my friend!

For me the important distinction is if it was sent for review and expected to be sent back or if it was allowed to keep whatever device it is. Same as if something was bought at full price or a discount. Regardless of if a device was intended to be kept forever or sold shortly after any good has monetary value due to materials and labor after all. As long as that is freely disclosed I can take that into account. If, like in the case of some guitar gear reviewers, they try to obfuscate these things I can't remotely trust their opinions.

9:31 Dirtywave / Tim should have scaled his production & fulfillment of units of the M8 to keep up with the scaling demand, especially with the release of the M8 2. I can't stand boutique companies (that don't sell a made-to-order customized product) that make every customer wait months for theirs to arrive just because they don't feel like figuring out adequate fulfillment logistics and shipping. The only thing bad about the world of the Dirtywave M8 1 and 2 is that they don't care about scaling / hiring / coordinating to make sure each prospective customer who wants to purchase one DOESN'T HAVE TO consider buying from scalpers to get their hands on one the week in which they decide to purchase one

Hands down the best portable groovebox imo is the Ipad mini 6, you can do literally anything ( as long as you don't mind a touch screen.

I don’t get the appreciation for USB-C. It’s so much more easily damaged compared with the far more robust USB-B connection. If you’re taking this out and performing with it, I wouldn’t go anywhere near a USB-C connection without a separate guard over it. If someone hits it the wrong way, the device is bricked.

Personally, I’ve had a much more enjoyable and expanded experience with USB. How one handles their equipment is an extremely important part of the equation.
