    I just did this and I feel you on the old-style connectors. I just made up a cable to run across my house to an office because the wifi is unreliable through the wall. One of the terminals I had to redo because some of the wires didn't make it all the way to the end. Had to lop off the Cat6 and do it over. If I had to do a lot of these I would buy your tool. Thanks for the video.

    I made the switch to the EZ connectors too. Trying to keep half inch wires in the correct order can be frustrating. If the cable twists you have to start over and recheck the order the wires are in. With the EZ connectors you can have the wires as long as you want them to make it easier. I wonder how many network administrators have horrible cramps in their hands after a day or two of terminating cables.

    When working with Cat6 cables, use a Cat6 connector Have no more than 0.5 centimeter of wire untwisted Those open-ending connectors will definitely help with keeping the length of untwisted wire as short as possible, as it's always a hassle to keep the cables nice and flat with you fingers when you only have 0.5cm of wire. Cat6(a) connectors often come with a cable guide clamp, these keep your wires in the correct order and flat before you put them in the connector, that helps a lot

    I have done a couple cables without the EZ connectors and keeping the wires flat and in the right order when they are short can drive some people insane. At least with the EZ connectors you can have as much wire as you are comfortable working with and cut off all the excess later. With the EZ connectors you still have to keep the wires in the right order and straight. If that isn't bad enough I know some dimwit who thinks you have to strip the ends of the wires. I guess he just likes to make everything difficult because that step is unheard of for ethernet cables.

    Personally, I replace the flush cutters and the stripper tool with a pair of snips (lineman's scissors, but don't call them that, they're snips). It takes some practice to get the right pressure to score just the jacket and not the conductors, but it's possible. If you're having troubles with it, that's what the annoying little stings are for, it's a rip cord. You score into the cable about an inch or so, remove the jacket and grab the strings as one string and pull down the jacket to the desired length (that way if you nicked the conductors with the snips, you're probably gonna cut that part off anyway). Once you're down to the desired length, just cut away the jacket (being careful not to cut the conductors). Pull on the plastic separator like you did and cut flush. I've noticed when you bend the four colors down, it makes things easier if you do it in a certain way. For 569-B, orange at the "north" (furthest from you), green at the "south" (closest to you), and depending on which end of the cable you're on, blue will be "east" or "west" and brown will be opposite of it. When you untwist the conductors, start with orange (now, it really doesn't matter which color you start with, but doing it the same way each time makes you faster!) Untwist whichever way you want. I've never used the previously removed jacket, but I sure will try that out! I usually just grab one of the conductors and twist it around the other one, however I have recently learned about untwisting just a small opening at the base of the jacket and sticking a small metal tool in there (like an awl or small screwdriver) and pulling up (IMO this is the fastest way and combines two steps in one!). Once your white-orange/orange wires are untwisted, orient the white-orange to the left of the orange making sure to untwist the conductors in the jacket too! Look all the way down in there and make sure they're not overlapping (just one twist in the jacket though, don't be a hero and try and untwist the whole damn thing!) If you just untwisted with your fingers or the jacket, take the smooth side of the snips and put some tension on the base of the connector and pull upward to smooth out the wire (the straighter the better!). Repeat this process for the blue, only you want to orient the blue wire to the left this time, again making sure the one twist in the jacket is undone. Then straighten those two. The orientation of the green doesn't matter because they're getting split up, straighten. And with brown, just like with green, you want white-brown on the left, then solid brown, straighten. Now it's easy to put the colors in order, grab the oranges, fold over white green, grab both blues, fold over green, grab browns. Pinch at the base by the jacket with your non-dominate hand (everything should be all noce and straight, no bulky wrap-overs or cross-talk inducing twists), wiggle all 8 conductors back and forth with your dominant hand while sliding your fingers down to the end. Do this a few times to get everything nice and straight and lined up. Usually, no matter how much you straighten the bulk of the conductors, the very ends will be unruly, take your snips (while still pinching the base by the jacket!) and cut of the unruly bits (be careful to cut all 8 straight across). Load the wires into the RJ-45 (clip down!) don't you let go of the base of that jacket! Slide until all 8 conductors go through. Slide until the jacket goes past the triangle tension holder at the base of the connector. Verify your color code. W-O, O, W-G, BL, W-BL, G, W-BR, BR. Slide everything into your crimper (the type of crimper you use should match the RJ-45, mixing brands is how you get the shorting problems!) If you're having issues with one or more conductors getting stuck in your crimper, just twist them! (Just the extra bits hanging out of the RJ-45!) And it should go in better.. crimp! Then make sure everything is flush and away you go! I may make a video demonstration at some point.

    Love and hate this tool and connectors. If you use different types of brands of cable be sure to check the pins are all seated. The main brand I use has tough inner conductor coating. After I cut the wires I always check the pins. 50% of the time I have to grab my other crimper to seat all the pins. Never have a problem with cat 5e. Just some cat 6 cables brands of bulk cable.

    I've checked it under a microscope and at the time I bought the cable it appears to be solid copper. I will say this, I've seen cases where somehow a seller on Amazon will sell something under the same link / same brand but it's nothing like the original. It can definitely be a crap shoot. I've had a situation where I've re-ordered out of my history and what was delivered was nothing like the original.

    Why are you using cat 5e connectors instead of cat 6 connectors in a cat 6 cable ? does it matter? do you loose speed in an office complex? very good video and well explained thank you

  • @1projectaweek

    @1projectaweek

    6 жыл бұрын

    The main reason was..its what Amazon had in stock at the time for next day delivery. In reality I was terminating cables for my IP cameras which all run at 100mbit, I wasn't too concerned about there being an issue since my data rates would be much lower than what a proper CAT-6 termination requires. At the end of the day, I doubt you'd see a major difference. However, if I was doing this for pay, I would definitely use the proper CAT-6 jacks.

  • @robertpurvis6106

    @robertpurvis6106

    I actually got both 5e and 6 connectors mixed up. Wasn't paying attention and I combined them in a container. I tried my hardest to determine if there was a difference between them. I'm pretty sure the pins are exactly the same. Thickness wise. The only difference I can tell is the cat 6 is slightly larger by 1mm at the main insert hole to allow the thicker cat 6 cable jacket to fit. The pin holes at the end are the same diameter in the website description. Also the strain relief I hate makes all cables slightly thicker so the cat 6 jackets would be easier with cables with strain relief. At the end of the day I only own a $500 Fluke meter to test continuity and not the 5-10k meter to see if there is a difference in speed. What I have learned in my 20 yrs doing this. There are 2 types of installers for 2 types of clients. 1) The fast construction type that get it done well working in conjunction with other trades. The bidders wars world. 2) The specialist type that charge an arm and a leg and deal with a very special type of client. 90% of the clients don't care about the speed differences between cat 5e and cat 6. They just want employees to answer emails and phones. They are kind of in the right. Typical office work never uses cat 6 to its potential. You get into long runs up to 300 ft, cross talk, yada yada. Now you are talking differences. Big spaces like that you start running fiber to multiple server rooms, etc. You as a moral contractor will sell them what they need. Not the best. Give them the best within their budget. I would love to be a #2 but sadly have fallen in the #1 slot. I make good money pulling 3-5 thousand drops a yr. It just takes a toll on the body.

    I'm by far an expert, but the order can matter as pins 3 and 6 are the same cable pair to eliminate cross-talk. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI/TIA-568 goes into more detail there. I have always followed Annex B (green pair is pins 3/6 vs orange) of the standard (because that's just what everyone else has done where I've worked). I find most cables are done to Annex B.
