This was an amazing period in Rypdal's evolution. Shortly after this he recorded what has become my Favorite ECM album - the first of 2 trio records with bassist, Miroslav Vitous, and Jack DeJohnette on drums.

I had a few of his ECM albums recorded around this time (1978) They went well with a few bong hits with my like minded friends. It also fostered in me a deep interest in Scandinavian jazz musicians. Incredible to see it performed. I always loved Per Ulv.

There is a relationship and understanding between Danish and Norwegian musicians and composers. As a composer Terje and Palle are a great inspiration for me. Every time I hear Terje, I want to travel to Norway. When I visited Bergen and saw the view from Fløien, two compositions came home to Denmark. Terje Rypdal is one of the most innovative guitarists ever. I love his music!

Anglagrad, Wobbler, Il Tempo della Clessidra , La Maschera de Cera, ZOPP, The Tangent, Manna/Mirage, Anekdoten, Aranis, miRthkon, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Panzerballett, Riverside, ZAAL, Ghost Rhythms, Discus, McGill/Manring/Stevens, Deus ex Machins,Tim Berne and Snakeoil... We have never had the ability to look backwards so easily as we do now. Never before could we go on KZread and instantly see videos of the "classic" musical movements of a given era. It is preventing us from moving forward, and preventing many people from becoming aware of the quality music that is actually being made.

On the fourth listen now of this one and after going on a Terje Rypdal binge, I hate myself for not knowing about this guy and his band, even though I've been into Scandi Jazz for a long time, though mostly Swedish and Danish jazz. Norwegian jazz was not so abundant in my public library in Sweden. If remixed, it still sounds very good. Kudos to the producers and the sound engineers. I'm just too used to a very dry drum sound from 70's stuff. This actually sounds at least 10-15 years ahead of its time. The guitar technique and the keys do sound from the era. But the overall production sounds like a lot like jazz recordings from the 80's and 90's. But as an ECM fan for a couple of decades now... It wouldn't surprise me if they were just really "out there" in the 70's both musically and with the audio engineering required. Sounds like they would have been a really big thing if they had some good singer and lyrics. Instant favourite and I have to get more into Norwegian jazz.

This is the original mix. It’s basically what JC’s drumkit sounded like with the snare mic a bit too loud and with lots of EMT plate reverb. ECM was getting known for using lots of reverb, and this was the Billy, the broadcasting engineer’s interpretation at the time. Not too shabby, but it’s the playing that sounds a bit ahead of the time.
