Here is the wonderful Canadian soprano, TERESA STRATAS, from a 1969 concert. She is singing Mimi's third act aria "Donde lieta usci" from Puccini's "LA BOHEME".

What a revelation for me. I heard her at the MET in the late 1980's (where she was annoying in the frequency of her performance cancellations). I came away from those performance unimpressed, certainly in relationship to my expectations given her elevated reputation. But here she's in her prime (in a recording with excellent video and audio from '69) and I have never heard as moving a rendition of the aria. Thanks for marvelous post.

One of my very favorite singers. I was lucky enough to see her at the Met in 1980 in "Lulu". Kind of odd seeing her not dressed like someone who wears magnets and collects crystals. Still mad at her for canceling a Boheme in Boston. Argh!!!

So glad that you liked it! This is one of my all-time favorite opera moments. It is breathtaking! I wish I have been able to hear her, but am happy that there are movies and recordings. She is amazing, and when she was young, she was truly remarkable.

Even the hideous Anna Moffo wig and her tendency to imitate the filmed concert performance(s) of Maria Callas cannot dim her greatness. I was lucky enough to see her a good dozen times in her prime at the Met, in BOHEME, LULU, and the rather tiresome MAHAGONNY (I loathe Bertolt Brecht, sorry). I also got to know her when she lived at the Ansonia, in all her manic-depressive glory. What an amazing woman.
