TERESA DE JESUS (TERESA OF AVILA) - EPISODE ONE (1) (English subtitle)

A powerful epic mini-series shot on location in Spain that tells the story of one of the most amazing women in history, St. Teresa of Avila. With meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy, outstanding production values, and an incredible performance by actress Concha Velasco as Teresa, this acclaimed major film production is the definitive film on the life of this great saint. Teresa of Avila was called by God to reform and renew the Carmelite order, a daunting task. She was joined in this work by her great fellow Carmelite and spiritual director, St. John of the Cross. This film reveals the conversion that Teresa herself had to go thru to deepen her own union with Christ as she endeavored to bring about that same deeper spiritual reform of her Carmelite order. It shows the tremendous opposition that she and John both faced within (and without) their order to bring about this much needed spiritual renewal. She and John of the Cross were both great mystics who combined the essential dimensions of a profound spiritual life with the very practical aspects of being completely dedicated to the human tasks necessary for such a reform.

I enjoy anything related to the Carmelites. I was 15 in 1967 and they were running a Carmelite Home in St Charles, Missouri. I wanted a part time job and thought I wanted to go in the medical field. I went and applied back then they only wanted your name, address, how old you were, what you were applying for and if you were in school or not 1 page one side. When I turned in the application, Sister Ursula in the office (we had two) said follow me. She took me up two flights of stairs where the pts were that could not care for themselves. I worked for them until I graduated high school in 1970 and went in the Army. Stories I learned from them was amazing. Each one was special in a different way. Its a shame all nuns can't be Saints. They definitely worked hard enough and prayed enough! I was not Catholic. But they treated me with such kindness and never tried to persuade me one way or the other. Bless them all they have passed on I am sure. I worked for the Youngest on the second floor Sister Concepta from Nicaragua. She was only 32. She had the prettiest brown eyes. I once told her she would have made beautiful babies if she had not become a nun! (Yes I really did say it) She looked at me and said You Think? Memories are a treasure no one can take away from you!

There is missing the end of this episode, my favourite part, about the fallen priest and his conversion from sin...... It is mentioned in autobiography of st Teresa that he died a holy death one year after it happened...

I wonder. Her illness came on only after she'd entered convent life and epilepsy usually manifests in childhood. Whatever the illness was, it was accompanied by severe pain and intermittent paralysis. It eventually resolved a few years later, though.

The cause of her pains is a fascinating topic. In this movie, tell me if I’m wrong, she appears to be pain free when staying with her noble lady friend, Lady Luisa de la Cerda in Toledo. It’s in the large convent full of jealous, tongue waggers that she gets sick. Think of it: she had to run go start her own convent to get away from them! Not that her illnesses were totally psychosomatic. In the beliefs of that time beating yourself and starving yourself were called penance and fasting. Today we know that extreme fasting changes body chemistry to the point that it may be very damaging. On top of these two factors add the harmful practices of so-called doctors. The herbal healer lady shown in one of the earlier episodes probably helped her the best. Her writings also are on YT, all well read, some with written transcripts. Blessings, all mystics.
