Terence McKenna - Difference Between LSD and Mushrooms

Terence McKenna spoke and wrote about psychedelic drugs, plant-based entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language, culture, technology, and the theoretical origins of human consciousness.
McKenna said that one of his early psychedelic experiences with morning glory seeds showed him "that there was something there worth pursuing", and in interviews he claimed to have smoked cannabis daily since his teens.
After the partial completion of his studies, and his mother's death from cancer in 1971, McKenna, his brother Dennis, and 3 friends traveled to the Colombian Amazon in search of a plant preparation containing dimethyltryptamine (DMT). They found various forms of ayahuasca, or yagé, and fields full of gigantic Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, which became the focus of the expedition.
Terence McKenna advocated the exploration of altered states of mind via the ingestion of naturally occurring psychedelic substances. During McKenna's studies, he developed a technique for cultivating psilocybin mushrooms with Dennis and in 1976, the brothers published what they had learned in a book entitled Psilocybin: Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide. In the early 1980s, McKenna began to speak publicly on the topic of psychedelic drugs.
McKenna soon became a fixture of popular counterculture with Timothy Leary once introducing him as "one of the five or six most important people on the planet." McKenna spoke on a wide array of subjects including; shamanism; metaphysics; alchemy; language; culture; self-empowerment; techno-paganism; artificial intelligence; evolution; extraterrestrials; science and scientism; the web; virtual reality and aesthetic theory or art/visual experience as information.
In mid-1999, after a long lecturing tour, McKenna returned to his home on the Big Island of Hawaii. A longtime sufferer of migraines, McKenna had begun to have increasingly painful headaches. His condition culminated in three brain seizures in one night, which he claimed were the most powerful psychedelic experiences he had ever known. McKenna was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a highly aggressive form of brain cancer. McKenna died on April 3, 2000, at the age of 53.

I like to think of it like this: DMT: Top floor - the control tower - you see the overlay of reality LSD: Middle floor - connection between yourself and your experience and everything else in the universe Mushrooms: Basement - in touch with the root of reality and of yourself - the most personal and inward looking stage You benefit from all experiences in a different way.

I find that DMT is the top floor, and high dose Mushrooms are the middle floor, and LSD is the basement--it only works to modify mushroom trips but not on it's own. I have high fuctioning autism aka asperger's syndrome so that may be why mushrooms do more for me than LSD.

Wakko Warner i have aspergers too, ive tripped on around 2.5 grams of mushrooms, and 400ug of acid as well as smoking dmt. I would def agree that mushrooms are a much more personal thing, on LSD (especially with weed) the visuals can be quite wonderful, and most importantly Fun. Mushrooms arent typically Fun in the same sense as lsd, but the visuals can be quite quite intense.

Looking through comments to find one to relate to and this is it. Only difference is I don't contact any entities but get filled with empowering thoughts of my future and mushrooms are for the blockages holding me back from my greatest path. I only done 2 tabs of acid and 7 grams of shrooms for reference. Still working on dmt breakthrough but at small doses I would say very close to mushrooms in the thoughts that form. On mushrooms I seem to be able to talk to entities at any decent dose but never have I seen them only telepathically.

@@kimberawification13 I think my lack of vision of entities is due to me focusing more on the energy in my body and different thoughts. I think it's so important for everyone to share their experience so we can try to figure out what's going on noatter what the truth may be. Life is a trip don't take it too serious lol

Lsd visuals are a lot stronger in the dark and the experience gets deeper when you fully surrender to it. It is common for me to contact entities. I once was tripping in my room and suddenly I began to see skeletons all over the place. They were all different forms and sizes. They were building tombs and making my room into crypt. There was also the rhythmic sound of knocking bones. I first thought wtf are you doing, I was scared. But then I looked at myself and realized that I was skeleton myself, I have nothing to worry about. I smiled at them and they smiled back. We had a good night together and it was just a part of the experience.

It always astonishes me when I hear of such experiences with LSD. It's fascinating: I do not tend to have that kind of _visions_ on LSD. I do have the most insane, most beautiful and intricate visuals such as patterns and geometry beyond any possibility of description. Actually it was always very abstract, almost mathematical. This fits the description of McKenna of LSD as an unspecified amplifier. Whereas with DMT or mushrooms I was travelling through forests, transforming into deer, flying above ancient cities, seeing the limbs of my body turn into spirits who, together, constituted the whole of my body ... Mushrooms and DMT really _do_ have voices. They really _do_ tell stories. They really _do_ speak. At least to me. We should always be cautious about trying to universalize everything.

Once i wasnt really tripping that hard, however whenever i would go into the restroom, which was quite often that night because i wanted to stay hydrated, i would start actually getting visuals and the 4th time i went in i literally heard, as realistically as possible, carnival music coming out of my roof or window and it proceeded to turn into maniacal clown laughter and it wasn't to scary but it was the most i had ever been convinced a hallucination was real for a second.

Another good analogy is shrooms are like the acoustic guitar of the psychedelic realm and acid is the electric guitar. If that makes any sense. From my own experience, I think Terence is spot on with his description of the qualities of Mushrooms and LSD and their respective differences. LSD really seems the best psychedelic for introversion and psychoanalytical work on yourself. When i first took LSD, every unconscious thought felt to be enhanced tenfold and projected unto the outer world. On my first trip on LSD, i discovered that i had social phobia that i hadnt dealt with for years, as my fellow trippers presence, who i had tripped with on shrooms many times, gave me a lot of anxiety. The Visuals of LSD seem very Cartoon-like and it shows you somehow that the world is just a construction. I feel like LSD really points to the kind of person you are and the things that you could be working on to be a better human being. Shrooms to me seem very different. They dont project your inner thoughts in the outta world. Not to say that your set is not important on shrooms, it is, but shrooms will just dont care what mood you are in or what your expectations are. They are uncontrollable. If you take over 3 grams of (dried) shrooms, they will just exchange your reality for a completly different one (Unlike this cartoonish distortion of reality with LSD). Whereas with LSD i felt that i could steer (not fully control of course) the trip, with shrooms you are not in the driver seat at all. You are at the mercy of wherever the driver (the shrooms) drive you to. Shrooms therefore seem to convey a different message alltogether than LSD. They dont care who you are, they have their own agenda and want to show you something out of this world.

LSD can definitely be visionary and connect us to very fundamental structures of existence. Especially with meditation it can go really really deep into the spirit and geometry of all things. And it can definitely dissolve you in that. The other psychedelics do their own versions of this too of course. One thing interesting about LSD to me is that it is biologically new for us as a species. It is a new window to look through and I think because of that there is a lot that can be learned from it but it needs to be partnered to the right philosophy and meditation to do it.. as do all of them for their deeper layers I suppose.

I had my second mushroom trip a few days ago, I ate a little less than an eighth. I’ve tripped acid upwards of 15 times, but that second mushroom trip I had was by far my favorite trip I’ve ever had. I laid down on a blanket outside all day, just watching clouds roll across the blue sky with some chill music. I was perfectly content. It was the happiest I’ve ever been by myself, and there were a few times I couldn’t stop smiling! Then i hit my peak and I felt like I was freefalling to earth. I really thought my soul was leaving my body and that I was going to heaven. I also had this insane desire for sex like unbelievably horny xD. I could see tattoos form on my skin, I saw myself begin to get muscular, I had confidence flowing through my entire being. When my friends started playing music I had this energy flow through me and i could no longer control my body. I was dancing, like really dancing haha. My friends thought I was killing it haha. I also had this strange feeling that there was a message trying to be told to me but i'm not sure what it was. After this I somehow came across Buddhism and Hinduism and it explains these chakras and I swear to you everything it explains about these chakras is how I felt. I also read about kundalini awakenings and it also describes how I felt during my trip very well. I used to be an atheist but now im thinking about following one of those religons. I am a 20 year old white male who is seriously thinking about practicing those religions all because of this eye opening trip. Sorry for the long read.

I like McKenna's goal of these substances as there being something useful one can bring back to the tribe after a journey. I would also add as an invaluable tool to understanding oneself and for the liberation & healing of oneself. I've always admired and respected his humility as well. He's fond of saying that no one really knows what is going on or what reality these substances actually open. Now thats the truth!

I have had the most crazy experiences with lsd. Far more mind boggling and intense than mushrooms. The first time I did lsd it was 300mcg as I was approaching my peak I took a huge dab( bad idea) I blasted off. I was transported somewhere else where I felt like the entity of lsd was showing me its reality. Showing me how little I am compared to the vast intricacies of the universe. It was very humbling. I remember everytime I started to ground myself in reality. The lsd entity would YANK me back into chaos and was almost like it was just saying " Oh I'm not done with you yet. "

Mushrooms appear to be more gnostic than the rest and more science-fictony and quirky. It's pretty unconventional for a mystical experience but it's full of answers and is a teacher. It doesn't just talk about cosmic destiny, planets, species, civilizations it also talks about enlightenment and wisdom, teleology, nearby invisible realms, mystery, fairies, gnomes and all that. True esotericism. I haven't done Ayahuasca but the way I've heard it described, it seems more like a counselor and is more healing, interpersonal, visceral and Earth-oriented compared to psilocybin which seems more outer-space oriented and idiosyncratic. It seems Aya focuses more on dignity, social tension and struggle, the pain and nobility of life and death, plants, animals, rivers, energy flows, health and disease, the lands, rainforests, childbirth, generations, the human condition, catharsis, etc. LSD is more about morphic resonance, synchronicity, vibes, contrasts, symbolism and the collective consciousness. It tends towards more ‘Eastern’ concepts like karma, akasha, effulgence, unity, etc. It's New Agey but also more cultured and poignant. Datura is a very different world though and certainly does not fit in with the New Age paradigm. Spiritually, it’s very medieval and magical and witchy as McKenna stated. A message that is empowering but also quaintly superstitious. It’s very old-timey and wizard-like but noxiously baneful and flustering as well. Cunningness, occultism, plants, clouds and rain, necromancy, maleficium, eremitism, the underworld. It’s all there. It’s where the concept of ‘witches brew’ came from. Many plants in Europe contain the same alkaloids so you have those baneful herbs to thank for a lot of our historical lore and superstitions.

Ryan Marshall Hey Ryan, thanks for the recommendation, I’m deffo all about that analytical thinking and introspection, but I also don’t think I’m ready to face past traumas or have the potential of a bad trip that I’m not ready for, I personally prefer to start low until I get comfortable, I like them recreationally to have fun and sometimes a little bit more but the higher doses aren’t for me right now. Interesting you stated that about lsd, I recently learned it’s more about oneness with the universe and otheres and mushrooms is more about introspection, but I suppose it’s very subjective by nature and depending on your individual circumstances also there’s little variability between the two in lower doses or so they say, I appreciate the response! Edited this: I totally Agree with the darkness, could this potentially be the subconscious mind seeping it’s way into the conscious? Not sure but i think that’s what unsettles me about higher dosage

@@Hanhandoesthecancan Oh ha no I actually found LSD relatively alienating and mushrooms was way more communal and made me feel connected to others. Especially in medium doses. There is a feeling of unity with acid but it's more of a quantum physics type of unity and you do feel connected to the "collective consciousness" but it's hard to explain. It's just like access to places your mind usually doesn't have access to. Like your past. But also perception-wise, like a squeegee on your third eye. Mushrooms is more esoteric and more about answers and teaching and the mystery behind it all and how little humans know about the universe. It's about how small you are, your life story is extremely trivial to the mushroom. I think people say mushrooms are more introspective than LSD simply because the momentary bouts of introspection and self clarity on mushrooms are so powerful. And the catharsis. But I'd say it's far from the main point of the trip. LSD trips are about 'you' but Mushroom trips are more about 'it' is the most concise way I can put it. Unless you're taking low doses of mushrooms (like 1.5 - 2 grams) which can be very introspective and debilitating. I don't know how people take lowish doses of mushrooms or use them recreationally haha. I don't think it's healthy really to assume the darkness of mushrooms is just your subconscious leaking out. I wouldn't overthink it. I just see it as a theme of the mushrooms and part of their character. Mushrooms deal with fear in the same way Ayahuasca is supposed to deal with pain. At least from an archetype standpoint. And yes, at higher doses is when their more unique characteristics become noticeable. I'd say Terence's description in this video of LSD vs mushrooms was far more accurate than any of these comments tbh. I'm sort of just reinforcing what he states or has stated before.

  • @Hanhandoesthecancan

    @Hanhandoesthecancan

Ryan Marshall Interesting that you stated our life story is insignificant to the Mushroom, I’ve heard others mention this theme about feeling irrelevant to the grand scheme of things, and time and good and evil beings irrelevant, we’re all part of a larger consciousness manifesting itself blah blah. The reason why I got into learning about psychedelics is that it forces people to talk about these existential topics I’ve pondered over my whole life but never comfortable enough to bring them up in a casual setting haha, but you seem very glued up on it all. I love how you talk about mushrooms in the third person and anthropomorphise them it helps humans gain a better understanding on their workings Their potential intelligence I suppose. With regards to the low doses I enjoy the creativity I feel which motivates me to carry out certain hobbies, and I the child like silliness is fun which is probably why people enjoy them at festivals. You’re right it’s not healthy to assume that everyone’s subsconscious is dark but I suppose what I meant is more along the line of our deepest concerns, traumas, and fears like you stated, which also appear in our dreams, though it’s not well understood by science. I love how you have laid out the differences, it’s all a bit difficult to explain even now typing im sure it doesn’t make sense. I’m keen to experience stronger visuals and explore or work through my psyche a little bit more but whilst minimising a sense of total loss of control if that’s even possible, would you have any tips on a dose or in general, I was thinking perhaps along the 1-2 mark like you stated?

I have felt since a young age that the Sun makes the most sense as the top deity for us humans. Akhenaten was on to something. I see the Sun as the father, and the Earth as the mother. Without the Earth, we would not have the elements we need to exist, without the Sun, we would not have the energy needed for creation. I have also been pondering lately on whether the Sun is in fact a conscious living being, as I believe the Earth is. I recently read a science article that suggests this may have some basis in reality.

I'm happy that I have very similar experience to what Terence is describing. For me too, LSD was not so much visual like a great mushroom trip (although I didnt dose high yet) but so intense and fascinating in its own right. For me, LSD is almost like a combination of MDMA and a good mushroom dose, and lasting much longer. :) amaaazing stuff with so much potential. I did get a lot of muscle tension though last time. But shrooms can make me very nauseous. A tradeoff to everything. Both of them make me very introspective and analyzing the world and thought. With shrooms, I usually get the urge to do things related to very deep subjects, like prime numbers or advanced physics. With LSD, it seems a more chaotic trip in general, but it was very much going straight to the heart and emotions and what is bothering you, shrooms do that too but it was even more for me with LSD, or it might be just me :)) Both of them can have a super strong headspace though, which can be uncomfortable. Going to try mescaline very soon !!!

I want to make an addition to my experience now, having tried a bit more LSD and also mescaline (to be more precise: 2CB and an alteration of it --- its chemically in the same type to mescaline). There is a lot to say about these things and I both love them. 2CB/mescaline seems to be my favorite since its a bit more calm and less intense than LSD, but you know how trips can differ every time even if taking the exact same substance. But it does seem a general line. I do have the wish to get my hands on some really good shrooms or truffles soon, but I can tell you that the previous substances gave me some really intense and effective times. With the assistance of them I wrote a super deep scientific physics paper. Guess ill let that know on my main channel soon, I am working with a top physicist now to publish it

yeah I agree with Mckenna about smoking hash while on acid. One time I had liquid lsd dripped on my tounge, and my friend gave me the fattest dab I've ever taken (like .3) and all I could do was lay down and melt into the couch for a few hours, I could feel the THC entering my bloodstream through my lungs and I felt it go from my lungs to my fingertips and toes. Quite an interesting experience because I've never felt THC absorbed into the body in that sense, starting from my chest and head and spreading to the rest of my body.

I grew up in the Welsh valleys and there were "magic" mushrooms everywhere in the autumn, even on the school rugby field and I and most of my friends started eating them at around 12 years of age but when I was offered a joint of hash a few years later I said "I've never taken drugs" To which my mate said but you've been into shrooms for years. In our childlike naivety we didn't think of them as drugs. When offered acid on blotters (pink panthers back in the 80's) I was a bit concerned until I was told "They are just like a few mushrooms, You would need quite a few to trip like a good mushroom trip" A good trip to us was a few hundred each. So maybe I got what I expected. i. e. a tame mushroom trip. Unless we bought a lot of acid. Anyway that's my tuppence worth as we say. Careful out there all you young space cadets and seekers of knowledge. All the best...Ja

People are very lucky today to have these kinds of outlets to help educate themselves about these matters and can share experiences.....Back (Cue old geezer voice) in the sixties there was nothing but negative press and own puzzled curiosity about WTF these experiences were about

When thinking of LSD and Mushrooms as signals. LSD seems to take a rectangular shape with hard edges while Mushrooms are smoother.

I found his analysis interesting when talking about lsd because it definitely seems to draw your attention to the way things are related and connected in a way you wouldn't normally perceive. There is a weird synchronicity that happens where it is almost like when you are on lsd you are a magnet for strange coincidences to happen. That has always baffled me. Maybe there is more coincidental activity going on than we are normally aware of in our everyday life. It definitely seems to drench everything in meaning though, which I feel is good for your mind.

Through my own experiences LSD feels like the world projecting itself onto the person, where mushrooms feel more like the persons own mind being projected into the world

I feel like they are both damn similar and LSD is more machine like pure energy while mushrooms is more grounded and puts you into your body more. Hard to explain the difference tho.

I've reached levels on mushrooms otherwise unachievable by other hallucinogens, there's just a different feeling it's more spiritual I've tripped harder on mushrooms than any amount of acid dmt comes close but I feel no euphoria from dmt like shrooms and dmt is short lived I can go on an 8-12 hour journey on mushrooms it's just a special experience not to take away from the others it's just my personal preference

Shrooms were very intense for me.. it was like i tried to close the door on certain thoughts that were uncomfortable, but the shroom forced that door open, it was a harsh, maybe even slightly scary experience but in hindsight i feel like it has made me more of an accepting person.. still so much more room to grow.. I really wanna try LSD but have bad anxiety when i think about dropping it

My best experiences were taking l.s.d,then eating small amt of mushrooms, sipping wine slowly while taking a hit of weed every 45 min to an hour.Glorious perfection.
