TENT RIDGE KANANASKIS // Against all advice - a breathtaking sunset on this incredible Alberta hike!

Tent Ridge is one of my favourite hikes in Kananaskis and the Canadian Rockies! Come along with us as we take on the trail and experience sunset at the top! With limited time to summit, we chose to do the hike the opposite way to what everyone told us. We had hoped this would result in a quicker ascent to our desired viewpoint and ensure we didn't miss sunset, luckily we made the right choice!
Tent Ridge Horseshoe is a 10-kilometer loop trail with over 800 meters of elevation gain and is generally considered a challenging route. The best time to visit is between June and October. If completing the full hike, it is recommended that you ascend clockwise so you can complete the scramble section going up instead of coming down.
In this video we did the hike as an out and back. Our goal was to make it to the Spray Lakes viewpoint at the end of the ridge so we ascended anti clockwise and descended the same way. If you are hiking just for this view and are limited on time, I highly recommend completing the out and back. However, if you have more time then the rest of the horseshoe loop looks stunning and would be an incredible hike to do when you are in Kananaskis Country!
When hiking make sure to always be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. The wind on the ridge was some of the worst I have ever experienced and we should have packed more layers. For this hike I would recommend packing/wearing:
- Hiking boots with good tread. I saw people completing this hike in runners and slipping a lot on the way down!
- A rain jacket/windbreaker
- Additional layers for the summit. We completed this hike in early July and would have benefited from gloves and a beanie
- Headlamp if you will be descending in the dark
- Hiking poles (optional but I like to have them)
- Bug spray. The mosquitos were swarming like crazy and we ended up asking other hikers to use some of theirs!
- Snacks and water!
Would you do tent ridge for sunset?

We didn't do that section! As we explained in the video, we did it as an out-and-back anticlockwise to make it to the ridge quickly for sunset. The scramble section is over the other side of the ridge and we didn't do it. Doing the hike the way we did was very achievable :)

Hi, would I be missing out a lot if I do not go to the weather station and go counterclockwise right to the true summit and back? I'm taking some engagement photos and my photographer insists this is easier (in/out) to summit but I don't want to miss out on any views. Are the views at the true summit and ridgeline walking towards it just as nice as those if i were to go clockwise and do a full loop?

Hi, in this video we just went up the right side to the viewpoint over spray lakes. We didn’t do the full loop or go to the true summit. It sounds like your photographer is taking about doing what we did in this video so you can see what views we saw, but I haven’t done the full loop to compare!

So did you guys do it Clockwise? It's so confusing eh on alltrails so many mixed reviews haha. I want to do it the way you guys did it too so it's a shorter hike.

We did it as an out and back going anti clockwise! So at the trail head we went right instead of left and just went up to the ridge and back down that way! Does that help!
