Tenor Sax Neck Comparison : 2 Yamahas VS. Boston Sax Shop Heritage
Check out this neck comparison and tell me what you think! It's been my experience that necks can work very differently on different horns - I find the Boston Sax Heritage Neck to be consistently great on any horn I put it on however.
I tried to provide a couple of different sound scenarios by doing isolated samples as well as samples with a backing track. Consensus is that all 3 necks are great - The Boston Sax Heritage Neck definitely has a little something extra that projects a more vibrant tone. It's hard for me to put it into words. I'll just say 'It's got a vibe' to it and leave it at that 😎

    Fantastic playing and demonstration in all necks, thank you so much for the video. I’ve switched from the original v1 to a C1 (alto82z). It’s been 3 months and for me, the C1 has much better intonation. Regardless of weather, reeds, mouthpiece etc, it is on point out of the box. For recordings (easy melodic comercial stuff) it allows me to just focus on the music and enjoy

    very nice neck test! I love my Yamaha G-1 and my new V-1 on my 82-Z tenor. I use the V-1 for Soul-Band gigs...it´s much brighter and more open, cut through much more. The G-1 I use for the more traditional gigs..big band and more intimate gigs....very interesting test, thanks!

Trying a different neck on any horn is a great step to take before you get a new horn unless you are just absolutely sick of the horn you're playing on. I own a 62 first serie and I am thinking to try a V1 on it. But watching your video I like the c1 so much better. V1 is more spread but not more “fat” which is something I maybe would like. BSS is more in that direction but still I like the clarity and apparent easyness of the C1 better. It gives sort of “nasal” sound that I usually associate with Mark VI, but a great nose it is 😁. Of course what I’d really need, much more than a new neck, is another ton of practice to make sound ME a bit better 😁

  • @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Antonio! I think you would really like the V1 to be honest. The 62 neck is probably more similar to the C1. The reason I am getting that nasal sound is because the mouthpiece I am playing on is very open and large so going into the C1 (smaller sized neck) it produces an overdrive like effect that I really like. Its definitely something I would suggest trying before buying if you can do it but overall my experience has been that the V1 is something that people tend to really enjoy playing on 👍

    Great video and great playing! May I ask, what was the angle of the BSS neck like compared to the Yamahas? I was looking at picking up a BSS neck, but I find so many modern necks have a steep angle to them. Mauriats in particular I think are awful for this.

  • @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    It does have a steeper angle than the standard yamaha which affects the low notes a bit but the tone advantages even that out. The struggle is real sometimes but just remember - the important part is getting a good Reed 😎

    I would stay with the Yamaha necks. My preference is the sterling silver. If i wanted the sound that you are producing with the BSS neck, I think I would change to a different horn. The model Yamaha you have is a bright bright sound. And yes, the Yamahas are sharp in the upper register. You could work more with SYOS to get a mouthpiece that would alleviate that problem. I am a big fan of SYOS and their ability to correct things. And they are super people to work with. Good luck and thank you for this illuminating video.

    I havent tried the E1 too much but every time I did it hasnt stood out to me. I recently tried all the yamaha necks and found that after playing on it for a couple years now I definitely prefer the C1 to the V1 because of the intonation and the focus of the neck. That being said though, the BSS neck is my favorite - very well made and brings out some different and vibrant overtones 😎

    Steve, I can't thank you enough for this video. I knew my V1 neck wasn't suiting me, but I couldn't find any demos of either the C1 or any of the popular aftermarket necks around on a Yamaha (they all play test on Mark VI, it seems). On top of that, my local Yamaha dealer doesn't have the C1 around, so I'd have to order it to try it... I can't seem to decide which I like best, the C1 or the BSS... It seems as if the C1 gives a truly focused MkVI vibe, while the BSS opens it up a tad e specially in the mids and gives it a little more colour. I play a Florida Link. What do you think? Thanks!

  • @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    I think you said it exactly right - you just have to decide which one you want :) Personally I think the BSS has more character, volume and better altissimo and would match a variety of different horns where as I would only use the C1 on my Yamaha because it was made for that horn. If you're ordering the BSS neck, use the code 'KORTYKA' and you'll receive a discount 😎. Either way though, you can't go wrong - they're all great.

    To me I think you sound most comfortable C1? They all sound great, so I'd say in the intonation/feel would be an important factor. V1 is the brightest, with a bit less body, more spread. BSS sounds darkest to me, lots of core to the sound. I thought the C1 was the most even and well balanced for you though. Interesting video!!

  • @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    @SaxophoneSteveKortyka

    Yeah! Thats a super accurate take! Originally when I was using a V16 mouthpiece, the BSS Neck worked really well with that mouthpiece. When I started using the SYOS piece, I found that the C1 neck was able to 'tame' that mouthpiece the right way because it is a monster (really open and LOUD). The BSS has a great sound/core to it but I just liked the way the C1 is able to control this mouthpiece. Thanks for checking out and lending your expert ears :)

    @@primozjurko6754 Hi Primoz - I would focus first on the reed and mouthpiece you are using as well as really trying to do a lot of pitch exercises to make sure you have control of your sound in that register. A neck can make a subtle difference but I don't think it will make enough of a difference if you aren't happy with a particular register - changing your mouthpiece or reed will make go a long way 👍
