Worple Road staged the first Wimbledon open championships in 1878, but by 1921 the ground was proving too small and the tournament moved to its present site in 1922. This film shows that final tournament in the old ground. We see a number of top players, including Brian Norton, who would lose in the men’s final, and “Mrs [Phyllis] Satterthwaite”. Crowds are large but the style is strange, with women serving underarm and the pace considerably slower than today’s game.

Nadal would be given a simple wood racket just like they have and his 3000 rpms would drop to 500 and he would have to play tennis just like them, building a point through thought and subtlety rather than winning with advanced tech and PEDs through brute force.

Mrs Craddocks underarm serve, legendary. We can only imagine her 'technique', if she got on the court, after drinking 2 litres of neat vodka...

The pace has changed. It was a "gentleman " or "gentle" game then. Wonder if they didn't try harder due to etiquette.

it so weird seeing someone play tennis wearing long pants and rolled up long sleeves. like they just came from the office or something.

Conversations you may not have heard of on courtside in 1921: Official : "Um...excuse me, Mr Braithwaite, it is against the spirit of the game to practice wearing a pair of white knickers..." Spectator : "Good Lord, Mrs CottonMary is wearing a sleevless apparel ! How undignified !" Umpire : "I have summoned you two contestants to gently remind you that both of you are guilty of the following acts - Mr Shinglecutter, you will desist from wasting precious seconds of the playtime by unnecessarily bouncing the ball on the turf with your free hand before commencement of the serve. As for you, Mr CatgutTwine, there has been official complaints from the spectators on your exceedingly high decibel levels of, dare I say, grunting at the exact moment of your serve to commence a point of play. That will be all, Gentlemen. Thank you."
