Tennis Lesson: How To Hit Powerful One Handed Backhands In Tennis
To get started, this shot begins with a professional quality ready position with the non dominant hand in control of the racket. When you play a backhand your non dominant hand with allow you to make a grip change.
Tip number one is knowing the grip on the one handed backhand otherwise known as the eastern backhand. The index finger is on top of the handle with the thumb diagonal.
Tip number two is using the non-dominant hand. Most players incorrectly play this shot with one hand and play their backhand from the arm. The first move is controlling the racket with the left hand and then coiling as a unit with both hands. The non dominant hand is always involved with this shot from start to beginning.
Tip number three is the contact point. The ideal contact point is about a shoulder-width out in front. If you are late, you can see that you will be fighting the ball off with no power.
Tip number four understanding how to get in position that allows you to get power and control. You need to feel a little bit of a stretch in the right shoulder and have it on reserve. you want to feel as though you are pulling through and into contact. Do not flip the wrist or have any hinging effect. It is played through the shoulder. Get comfortable where you can release with the left hand and pull through contact.
Tip number 5 shoulder drive. Understanding how the power you take in contact is played through the shoulder and the follow-through. When you practice this, hold the finish and check your balance! Make a complete swing and then carry on.

    Really like your backhand John. My observation of the teaching from natural one-handed coaches such as you is that the initial focus is mainly about feel and rhythm. Conversely, a two-handed coach teaching a one hander would usually try to emphasis on how to achieve stability and power through body structure, which are of course the strengths of a two hander. They often look rather stiff as the result. A great video.

    Thanks so much for your comments and contribution to the video discussion. Balance and rhythm are definitely essential for the one-hander to flow effortlessly and generate power. The two hander is more core-rotation based. Kindly, John

Are you able to do a lesson with some drills on getting your weight forward on the forehand. In particular I struggle with foot work on the open forehand and a lot of the time end up on the back foot. I Don’t have the same issue on the backhand. Struggling to consistently get the weight moving forward

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tee, I think the concept of windshield wiper backhand is ok as long as the movement is developed from the right power source. I see and hear too many coaches (and commentators) talking about the wrist...the action and power is not coming the from the wrist. Best, John

    All of your videos are excellent. You didn’t really address topspin and how you get it on this stroke. Your swing path looks rather horizontal and likely producing a fairly flat ball How can I get a heavier topspin shot that really takes off or that can give more net clearence?

    Wonderful, wonderful lesson, John! Question: With the one-handed backhand, how mindful (if at all) should one be about ‘planting’ the right foot/leg (for a right-handed player) and then swinging ‘around it’?

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi David, Thank you so much! Great question, and perhaps a concept I have not heard before. I like the idea because if we trace the path the hand takes in the swing, it certainly has an "around and up" pattern. Just be careful not to over rotate the shoulders before contact...let the follow-thru momentum bring your shoulders around to face the net. Are there any lessons you would like to see in the near future? Thanks again, John

    Performance Plus Tennis Appreciate you asking, John. I’ve actually been thinking a lot about it and I’d absolutely love to see a lesson dedicated to the non-playing hand and it’s role in the forehand, backhand (both one and two-handed), forehand volley, backhand volley, serve and overhead. I know that you speak to the role of the non-playing hand in your various lessons. But to have a stand-alone PPT lesson that lays out the role of the ‘hand that does all the work’ would be such a gem and one that I’d replay to my 8 1/2-year old son over and over and over again...

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    @@davidkim8134 Hi David, Thanks for the recommendation for a comprehensive video on the non-playing hand. This is certainly a key concept that I emphasize on most, if not all shots. In fact, I get into even greater detail in the courses inside the PPT Membership, along with the other vital principles to building a great foundation. These principles are my "golden nuggets"! I have not seen another coach understand or present these concepts in the level of detail, or the building sequence that I have created. So all this to say, I reserve the complete concepts for those who enroll in our membership or buy a course on the website. The good news is we are expanding our KZread Channel to feature more lessons beginning Sept. 1st. While the details have not been finalized, there will be various levels of access and benefits beyond our weekly published lessons. Stay tuned! Kindly, John
