    Excellent video and very sound advice. To maintain the general position of the arm (flexion of the wrist and elbow) constant, from the ready position, through the backswing, and through the stroke, swinging from the shoulder. It makes for consistency, and simply means a couple of things less to think about. Even though they were "old school", that simplicity reminds me of players like Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert. And for somebody contemporary, maybe Djokovic. Simple, clean and consistent strokes. "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication", Leonardo Da Vinci.

    hi Eric, Thanks for your excellent comments and contribution to the video! How about the Tsitsipas forehand?! It's pure, simple and a great model for anyone to follow! And I love the final quote you provided...simplicity is often overlooked, but I believe is the key! All the best, John

    Excellent video. Some videos place emphasis on the buttcap pointing at the incoming ball. To me I have to have wrist movement which say is a recipe for mistakes. That is exactly my problem, at 76 I don’t have much flexibility in my wrist. Look forward to your comment.

    Hello Guy, Thanks for your question. I recommend you monitor your grip/ arm tension...be sure you have the appropriate "feel", and the range of motion you will produce will be natural for you. Let me know if you have additional questions. Best regards, John

    So many excellent points here and as always a good presentation. I would suggest a little less external rotation in the Take Back, which is a stronger position for making the Slot Entry move transition into the Forward Swing. Stronger physical positions mean less strength and effort required as well as in this case, you are less likely to let the hand slip back to, or behind the plane of the shoulders. Also I'd like to see you make "Slot Entry" earlier in your forward swing. Here you are dropping in very similar to what we often see as an issue for Wrap take-backs you employ on the2:35 swing demo for a medium high contact.

    So interesting the basic stroke you illustrated did not work for me for some reason. I found it too inconsistent and lacked control. Perhaps it was more of technique or whatever on my part. Strangely I found that the completely closed racquet into the slot position with wrist change (doorknob turn akin to what Nadal and Fed do) actually works for me as an advanced beginner. Guess everyone is different.. lol. good video..

    Hi Bman, Thanks for your comment and contribution to the video. I think the bottom line is, everyone is indeed different, and you have found the technique that works for you. The most important thing is to discover your natural style. Now flourish with it! Best, John

    Hi John, thanks for your video. For me, when I play tournaments or represent my club team, what is difficult is to plan my day for a lot of things to do. Program my day to get up, eat, digest, warm up, play competitive tennis and recover. I have so much to do, that I do not do what is important. I happened to have three matches in one day and it was not easy to plan my day and prepare to play the semi-finals the next morning. I hope this gives you some suggestions for a new video, which can help a lot of people. Thanks.

    Which forehand backswing do you prefer for today's game if you want to become a pro player Del Potro's or Federer?¿

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    Great question. For most I would say Federer, although if a player is more natural with the traditional backswing, then so be it! Can't argue with Delpo's forehand, and I believe he would be equally successful in today's game. Best, John

    I have sort of a "pendulum backswing". Little to none of the typical "C" loop. Why is this considered wrong? It feels comfortable and natural. I think the critical part is getting below the ball on the backswing in order to generate topspin, which I try to do. How critical is it to create a "C" loop? I am a 4.0 level player.

    Hi Raul, Thanks for your great question. Ivan Lendl had a forehand backswing similar to what you are describing, and he did well with it. So I think it is fine. Optimal? Maybe not, but if it is natural and effective for you, then stick with it! Best, John

    I don't understand: the arm is bended or firm before shoting ball?

  • @PerformancePlusTennis

    @PerformancePlusTennis

    Hi Sabatino, Most players hit the forehand with a double-bend style, but some players like Federer and Nadal play with a straight arm into contact. Which is better? For most recreational players the double-bend is more versatile and is lesson likely to cause injury to the elbow. I hope this helps you. Best, John.

    Nice video with many useful tips! One thing however that stands out however as not optimal in the form you display, is that on your own unit turn and takeback, you do not rotate your upper body enough. If you look at any ATP pro or even most players just below that level, they rotate their shoulders so much that for example, for a right handed player, if you were looking at him head-on from the opposing side, at the most extreme point of the turn and takeback, you would see the left shoulder completely in front, and the right shoulder would be perpendicular to the fence in back. You would not see any of their chest from head-on, and in fact, would often see a bit of the back. This is regardless of what the feet are doing, i.e. neutral, semi-open, or open stance, and is very evident on any slow motion video. When you do your own unit turn and takeback, you only seem to turn your upper body about 3/4 of the way at the most, and your chest is always quite visible from the front. So notwithstanding that you obviously are still hitting a good ball, you are robbing yourself of significant power since there is less upper body rotation when you hit...

    Hi Colin, Thanks for your great comments and contribution to the video. You are indeed correct. The reason I don't get the full turn is an injury (non-tennis related) to my neck last year. My range of motion is improving, but a slow process. I am back into Yoga training and it is helping quite a bit. It's amazing how the body adapts and creates "work-arounds" without one really noticing. Best, John
