…I don’t think so, she said something like, “either way, whether you drop it or will have dropped it, it’s YOUR freewill causing it…” so it’s not that he’s both inverted and forward at the same time… a single instance of the character can only have singular POV-direction, so in this case the inverted Protagonist WAS actually emptying the clip and tossing the gun, but the forward Protagonist from the past didn't know yet (and therefore you as well on the initial viewing) that people could be inverted, and so based on the intro on inverted-bullets that he’d been given, he likely assumed the bullet holes in the glass were from inverted-bullets, hence his saying, “don’t touch them!” - and then he acted on instinct (formed from this limited info he currently had) attempt to “fight back” against this strange and novel assailant who was presumably a normal person using inverted tech… and so they preceded to engage in a fight that wasn’t really a fight meant to kill at all.

1:55 weird thing is that because they are reverse time to eachother, because they are pushing against eachother, they should feel no resistance, because from both of their perspectives the forces go in the direction they want. They push the other backwards, and the one they are pushing is trying to push them except that their time flows opposite so they are pulling. So strange to think about.

There's past Protagonist and Neil who are going forward, then there's future Protagonist and Neil who are inverted, and then finally there's future Protagonist and Neil who are going forward as well. I've only just picked up on that.

You can see the intent in both of their actions. You can see the confusion, reaction, and surprise when their attack lands and simultaneously un-lands. Imagine you walk into a room and see a man bloodied and defeated on the floor. You should not feel a sense of finality, instead you should think backwards and anticipate how they will be before you perform the final blow, then you deliver that final blow, but continue to play defense because the struggle will increase. Every time you land a hit it's because there was an opening, and that opening was created by your hit, but then you should leave them in a position where it would be easy to hit them. This is like chess but you have to be careful as your winning state is slowly undone back to the opening. You start with checkmate and you have to play backwards, and sometimes moving a piece will un-capture an enemy piece. You have to flip reaction with anticipation. Maybe none of this is coherent, but that's just a testament to how high concept and difficult this movie is. Very well done.

I think I have a pretty good grasp on how the actual events of the movie played out, and even how the fighting works in big scale battles like the finale, where inverted people may fire gunshots at forward people and vice versa but the hand to hand fighting, is something I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around. @@windows9965 One thing is that for air molecules interacting with each other and with walls, you cannot tell in which direction in time they are going. You can tell with complex things like humans, airplanes, cars, birds, explosions, guns, because one way is statistically highly preferred. So there is no need for inverted air. It does not matter, air works just fine both ways. Its most likely an intentional physics plot hole, added as a justification to give all the inverted people masks, to make it easier for the audience. I get a sense that there are other plot holes, but i have to think about them more.

I know it's a dumb question, but could someone explain to me as simply as possible: if we can move in both directions in the spatial 3 dimensions, why can't we do the same with time? Why must be always go "forward" in time? I'm not say we *should* be able to move back - I just want to know why.

  • @kukuhmuntono

Because if you wouldn't be able to react and do shit if you also move backwards in time. Something must've move forward for you, at the very least your mind is. Cuz if your mind move backward, now you think of something, but then time rewinds and you forgot what you just thought, so basically you can't think and plan anything like that. Now if your mind still moves forward, you'd still be able to observe things around you and think of what to do

  • @momom6197

From a physics perspective, there is no particular reason we can move spatially either, it's just how the universe works: the forces of interaction work spatially and not temporally, and there's nothing to say about the why. Time travel is authorized by the laws of physics (for example using wormholes or CTC) but not the way it is depicted in Tenet, as far as we know for now. Funnily enough, Tenet is one of the rare depictions of scientifically accurate time-travel from a causality viewpoint: the "what's happened, happened" is basically Novikov's self-consistency principle. So, basically, there is no known reason, although there are plenty of related studies. Remember that believeing in a reason is a matter of philosophy, not science: feeling that there ought to be an explanation is a fact about us, not about the universe.

Its not a dumb question at all! It actually a really deep and profound one best answered from thermodynamics. Easiest way to learn about this is search up the term Arrow of time. In physics almost everything are symmetrical in process with an exception for entropy. The second law of thermodynamics stipulate that an isolated system experiences increase in entropy with time (Isolated system here is a key word, we can reverse entropy regionally i.e. like in a fridge making ice with energy as input, but if you account for the whole system where waste heat is exhausted out of the fridge, the entire entropy of the system actually increased to make those ice). As this process is irreversible it gives time a direction.

In case you actually want an answer: Think of a ball in an empty room. It just sits there. Another ball rolls into the first ball and so the first ball starts to roll in the same direction. In our universe, these balls are equivalent to particles of matter (atoms, molecules, quanta, etc.) We know these particles must exist because we observe these changes in direction in our daily lives. In our universe a particle can push you in any of the 3 spacial dimensions, because those particles interact with the 3 spacial dimensions. There are no particles that we know of that can push you in the time dimension. We are moving forward in time and nothing is slowing us down or speeding us up. Here's the cool part: we have *no way of knowing* if our universe has more than 3 spatial dimensions, or more than 1 time dimension. If those other dimensions exist, but there is no way to interact with that dimension, we will never be able to observe an interaction. Lastly, time probably doesn't even exist like that. Time is just an emergent phenomenon of our brains. In this universe the only thing that matters is the order events are carried out in.

He already experienced this fight as the opponent and knew the outcome which was that he successfully jumped into the machine and his past self was unharmed. He also knew that in the struggle the gun was fired and they started closer to the machine. He likely didn't have time during the fight to process the complexities of outcomes given the violation of normal cause and effect while interacting with the world due to time reversal. So probably by instinct he shot the gun thinking it will get the opponent to dodge left and inch closer to the machine. Of course his opponent was in normal time flow and from his past perspective was trying to push the firing gun away to the right and was experiencing things completely differently. Notice in normal time flow the gun discharges when it is far away from our suit hero's head. It does highlight the scientists advice at the start to "don't try the understand it but feel it" while she plays with the inverted bullet adeptly. She is trying to get him to develop new instincts when interacting with time reversal world where our normal feel for cause and effect are violated.

He’s not; just getting himself to move towards the turnstile.

Also if you noticed closely he is purposely missing every shot so that he makes sure the gun is fully unloaded and cant can be use against his forward or inverted self

@@Raulito2td Yeah I'm 99 percent sure this is the correct answer. Disarm the lethal weapon in a fight where neither party should be dying and your fighting partner doesn't know the stakes. He was about to be on the other side of the turnstile and his original self would have been fully armed had he not done what he had done. He basically guaranteed the gun was unusable for the whole fight.
