    You Bet is based on The German TV show ‘Wettern Dass..? Which ran from 1981 to 2013. It was broadcast several times a year and made a comeback as an a pre Christmas version in 2021 and 2022 presented by favourite presenter Thomas Gottschalk who is like the German Bruce Forsyth. A show runs from 8.15 and often finished well past midnight.

    I remember Cilla's Moment of Truth, Interceptor, You Bet and Fast Friends. Cilla was uncomfortable with the fact that a failure on the show meant that nobody in the families competing won anything and that included the kids. Interceptor, I always felt was an attempt to re-create the heady days of Treasure Hunt with Anneka Rice and Kenneth Kendall. You Bet started with Brucie, who left it to go back to the BBC and revive the Gen Game. He handed over to Matthew Kelly, who left to take over Stars In Their Eyes when Leslie Crowther did a loop-the-loop in his Rolls on the M4 and who in turn handed over You Bet to Darren Day, thereby continuing its downward trajectory. Fast Friends? I only watched it because of Les. He was chosen as host at the 11th hour. He was super-imposed onto the opening titles and it was so badly thought out it was an all-round embarrassment for all concerned. We may laugh at Challenge TV's output but we must remembet, that was the best of the gameshows.

    The Scottish actor who plays the interceptor was in a few episodes of Cagney and Lacey before he did this. He was only a extra, playing a uniformed new York cop. I remember a day time game show presented by a sky news sports reporter called turnabout on BBC one, and another one with Bob carolgees where you had to match pictures with each other from memory. These have got that weekday afternoon either before, after or in competition with Countdown on Channel 4, feel to them. Watched by no-one other than old aged pensioners, the unemployed and bored housewives. The contestants of which were equally old age pensioned, unemployed and quite possibly bored housewives. The hosts of a lot of these shows were complete unknowns who'd managed to get their fizoggs on the box after working in local radio for years prior, who despite being nice enough, didn't quite cut it when it came to television. There were exceptions, of course, when they'd get a well-known celebrity to host, and the show was generally on during a prime-time slot. Pretty much the same thing, though. Interceptor was basically, 'Treasure Hunt', with a different presenter/participant on behalf of the contestant, taking part. I'm surprised you didn't mention the one everyone remembers as being the pinnacle of these types of show, namely, 'Going For Gold.' A series of series that seemed to drag on for years, after it's initial run as a contest for someone to go to the Seoul Olympics in 1988, with progressive years into the 90's having ever more tentative links to something to do with gold. I think they give up with that toward the end. Henry Kelly was the host and it included contestants from all over Europe, but seemed to be majority British and Irish. I'll admit that was actually one show I did watch, (for a while, anyway), and sported one of the worst, lyrically at least, theme tunes there is. The scansion was terrible.

    'Wanted' was great and would work even better with today's technology. Actually quite similar to C4's current 'Hunted' series. The big problem with it was the first series was presented by Richard Littlejohn, and also featured irrelevant chats about evading capture from some former senior police guy and the KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky.

  • @97channel

    @97channel

    Жыл бұрын

    I actually preferred series one than series two. The first series was more edgy, the tone was as if it were a serious manhunt. I'm not a fan of Richard Littlejohn, but I liked his style on Wanted. It also went out in prime time, I think 8.30pm in the winter. So the live links were in dark streets, gave it an exciting edge. But series two went out on a Sunday teatime during either the spring or summer, and the daylight ruined the vibe. The tone went more knockabout silly, and I didn't like that. I found Ray Coakes irritating, because he um'd and er'd too much. He never seemed to quite know what he was supposed to be saying. And they added some silly new rules, where the contestants could earn bonus cash by doing something daft. They dropped that after a few episodes. Also, because of the earlier timeslot the runners during the live links would be swarmed by kids from the area mucking about and showing off to the camera. That was annoying. The runners were all billed as being professional trackers, but I noticed that one of them was actually a TV producer who worked on The Big Breakfast.

  • @marcwhit1

    @marcwhit1

    I did prefer the edgier first season. Didn’t help the disparity between the on the run game, and the phone box game got exposed. You had people getting high scores during the week losing their first try if the studio game, while people who made a complete shambles of it during the week surviving the phone box game for several weeks.

  • @97channel

    @97channel

    Жыл бұрын

    @@marcwhit1 You just jogged my mind on a minor scandal involving the phone box game. I'm having to rely purely on memory from something which I read over 25 years ago, so forgive me if I'm not entirely accurate. But as best I remember it, the show went live on air and two of the teams got caught very early on. The one remaining active team were also about to be found by tracker Victoria, who had been tipped off over their location earlier in the day, and was merely yards from the phone box. The producers panicked, as finding them would kill the game with some 40 minutes remaining. So they had Victoria pretend that she couldn't find them. It got exposed, I think, by someone who had been listening to either CB radio broadcasts in the area, or maybe a satellite feed. Something like that. It was a big article in one of the newspapers.

    I definitely remember Moment Of Truth and You Bet. I am aware of interceptor but don't have much moemory of it from the time. Basically they contracted Annabel to cover Anneka Rice's absence from Treasure Hunt for a while, then shortly afterwars when Anneka confirmed she wasn't coming back they immediately axed Treasure Hunt (because Annabel wasn't deemed to have suceeded in the role). But then they need to find another job for Annabel whilst she was under contract, and they came up with Interceptor.

    "You Bet" was an interesting one. TRUE story, I was living in Southern Germany, They'd licensed the format of this show. But being Germany, their "tea time" standards when it came to public nudity were not as strict as the UK. One episode I remember a LOT - and Im NOT MAKING THIS UP, and I'd LOVE to see it if ANYONE has a copy anywhere (and obviously you'd have to censor 200 nipples, so this would be a big job). This oldish german guy in his late 60s/early 70s comes on, and Bets that he can tell (blindfolded) the breast size of (young*) topless women just by touch alone. He had 100 women in front of him, he got something like 2 or 3 right (i cant remember the exact number, it was terrible, but surely law of averages would've got him better by just guessing random numbers). At the end, the host said "ah well, did you at least have fun?", and the old guy says "yeah - I never thought I could actually DO it, but it was the best night of my life" I am NOT lying.. THIS ACTUALLY happened on Saturday early evening German TV. YOU BET! * I remember this bit, he had a conversation with the host, they HAD to be under the age of 30.

    You Bet is the only one I used to watch as a kid. Confessions i have a vague memory of but don’t remember much about it. I’m a bit too young to remember Interceptor. Any tennis fans will tell you that Annabel Croft is now a regular pundit/commentator on tennis coverage, particularly on Amazon Prime when they do the US Open. I think she does a bit for the BBC as well but that’s mostly radio.

    I show I remember watching on Challenge TV back in 2004/05 called Ice Warriors, which was basically Gladiators on Ice. It originally broadcast on ITV in early 1998. While it doesn’t get a good rep (during a time when Gladiators was still on) I’d rather watch that than trash like Dancing on Ice.

    If anyone doesn't remember You Bet I'd be surprise. That was must see Saturday evening telly. I do remember The Moment Of Truth (98-01 by the way not 88) because I felt it was a poor mans version of YB. Interceptor I recall losing interest in despite the wonderful Ms Croft. I preferred her treasure hunt days. Fast Friends I only recall because of Les but not much about the show. Confessions and Connections are a blank. Steal I remember the computer graphics from for some reason. Think Tank I do remember. The presenter did Hangar 17 iirc. Jumble rings the vaguest of bells. Wanted I think I saw one episode of.
