Tempsford Level Crossing, Bedfordshire (With a VERY faulty alarm!)
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Date filmed: Saturday the 25th November 2023
Videos filmed between 16:21 and 17:16
Route: East Coast Main Line (ECML)
- Between Sandy and St. Neots Stations
Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV)
Location: Station Road, Tempsford
Here's a decent variety of high speed services seen passing this quiet level crossing near the village of Tempsford, Central Bedfordshire. The level crossing is located quite a way beyond the village down the no-through road which runs through it, and is in quite a rural-feeling location; the road here is very quiet and the crossing actually sees more trains than anything else! The lights on one side are facing inwards towards each other due to the T-junction on that side, and decent trackside views and good lighting make this a good location to see railway action - even after dark. With the recent closure of Peterborough's Power Signal Box, it is believed that this level crossing may now be controlled as far as 150 miles away in York. As can quite clearly be heard, one of the alarms here (a new one as well) has become incredibly faulty as of very recent and produces a really strange-sounding tone - for a yodalarm, that is, though it is still an alarm making an alarm-y sound when the barriers lower. This is what it's meant to do!
These videos were taken throughout 55 minutes at this location in the late afternoon as the day darkened into night - darkening so early as it was late November. The most interesting catches include one of Grand Central's recently-inherited Class 221 'Voyager' units, as well as a rare working of an Intercity 225 set (with 91 114 "Durham Cathedral") on an alteration to the planned diagram (the list of services a particular train / crew is planned to cover whilst out of the depot), covering a Newark Northgate service in place of an unavailable Azuma. However, the view of this latter train was quite badly blocked by a slower and un-interesting Thameslink Class 700 it happened to overtake here. I was well and truly "bowled"; Just my luck. Anyway, hope you enjoy!

Thank you very much! It is one of the oddest sounding alarms I have ever heard
WOW. That alarm sounds almost identical to Navigation Way No.2's old YO5.
Cool 😎

That alarm sounds EXTREMELY bad, if the alarm sounded like Bray originally, that would be a first to hear one get that bad.
Great video! What a terrible alarm there.

Great video! That skirt looks quite dangerous with it swinging that much, and that alarm sounds like a tornado Siren! Great (almost) parallel run in the 3rd closure!

Thanks very much! It is a very alarm-y sound to be honest. If only it wasn't for the almost parallel run, I would've been able to provide a better shot of the IC225 set on a rare (for that sort of train) working...
Great videos 👍

My gosh, that needs replacing! One of the worst I've seen in a long while. I'm really excited for my Grimsby trip in February but is 40 crossing too much for 2 days? Great video!

Thanks very much! I've not heard another yodalarm of this sort sound anything like this before. 40 in 2 days is hardcore even by my standards, lol.

@@SouthEastLevelCrossings dont worry. I'm staying in the Holiday Inn by Wellowgate. It's a 2 day trip though I have to sacrifice a Cherry Hinton Crossing, or Laundry Lane

Wow! I don't think I've ever heard a faulty Yodalarm like that before. I wonder what could've caused that? My initial thought is has it just been tuned really badly? Have the two notes/tones been tuned down so low that it's just going *bleeeeeeeh* ? (I can faintly heard it alternating, but it's very slight) or has the alternating speed been turned up too fast to where it's just going *bleeeeh* ? Funnily enough, the (normal sounding) alarm on the other side is fairly reminiscent of one of the old alarms that was here 10+ years ago (which, I'd argue, shouldn't have been replaced when the LED wig-wags were fitted, as they'd probably still be working fine to this day)

I reckon I know what caused it. Remember when there was a fire at Everton LC just down the line? I reckon that's what caused it. The circuits must have been fried by the heatwave.

Something has really messed with the potentiometers I'd hazard a guess.

Something that has changed in the RF2 yodalarms since MoFlash purchased the C&S brand off of Stahl is the fact that they don’t incorporate the smoothing capacitors across the speakers anymore, causing a lot of them to sound either crackly or unstable in pitch, I purchased 4 of them from MoFlash directly last month, and all of them were really susceptible to the smallest bit of interference because of the absence of the smoothing capacitors, I think it’s one of a few things they really should consider reincorporating back into the RF2 yodalarms
It's not even broken it's a circus😂😂😂
Nice video crossing I'm first early
