Whoa! What a trip, I remember reading about the NUON in a few magazines, one in particular about how the NUON team comprised folks from Sega, PlayStation, 3DO and various studios. The ones that left PlayStation (while they were king of the hill) felt that NUON was where the future and evolution of the gaming industry would be and wanted to be on board as the first to usher it in. Since this is the first time I've seen the NUON since then, I take it didn't fare so well lol

jeff minter is truly one of the greatest and most unique game developers of all time. with tempest 4000 and 2000 so easily accessible, i really wish whoever is at “atari” these days would find away to release this one on modern consoles as well.

I mean I don’t think technically Atari had anything to do with this. VM Labs was comprised of ex-Atari people, but they were a separate company

@@VideoGameEsoterica it says right on the title screen in your video that the game is copyright 2000 atari interactive (also hasbro, as this was when hasbro owned atari interactive while midway owned atari games). also it was produced by llamasoft / minter as with the other modern tempest games. VM labs may have made the nuon itself but atari likely still owns the rights to this game.

@@ActuallySanFrancisco It does not most likely, VM Labs and Minter just licensed the rights to use Tempest for this game. They released an IP Catalog for investors occasionally and the most recent I saw(Oct 2021) has the notable absence of Tempest 3K, this happened with a few properties in between the demise of the Jaguar and the Infogrames buyout

Its like you are reading my mind. I always wanted a NUON just for this game (and maybe Iron Soldier 3 although I think that is also on PS1) The idea for NUON was actually pretty sound I think. Essentially the reverse of the PS" (i.e. add a game console chipset to a DVD player rather than add DVD playback to a game console) I believe there were also DVD's that were enhanced for the chipset. Find the system fascinating but never even seen one in the flesh. Happy New Year and look forward to your videos in 2023!

The business concept of NUON was a great idea. The rollout and execution was terrible. Happy NYE! Plenty of fun coming in 2023!

At first I saw you were missing the power ups. They give you better firing, jumping and helper bots. I know its easy to miss with so much going onscreen.

This is the one game missing that I wished was in the Atari 50th anniversary collection, especially considering that part of its appeal was to have some rare games more easily accessible. The only other way to play this game without getting the Nuon and a copy physically is to resort towards emulation and piracy, which is at the moment shaky at best. What a shame…

Beautiful game! This is up there with TXK, Space Giraffe and Tempest 2000. I have recently ordered a Switch physical Tempest 4000 so i can't wait for that. I have yet to play Moose life and Akka Arr but they are on my gaming bucket list.

Yep…it’s another Jeff Minter Trip!!🤣🤣😵‍💫🙌 And I thought 2000 was a wild ride!! I think there maybe a trivia reference to a tv soap in the U.K. called Eastenders as one of the levels is called “Albert Square” (where eastenders the tv soap is set)😁 Music is awesome!!😍 looks like a lot of fun!

There’s the Nuance emulator for PC but I don’t think I’ve ever tried it out.

Man, I really wish I liked this game more. To me, Tempest 2K hit that nice sweet spot on where the visuals were trippy but the game was still star if the show. With 3K and 4K, the visuals completely overtake it. I get nauseous playing this game for more than 10 minutes. It deserves all its praise, but it’s just not for me. I’ll take Iron Soldier 3 and Not-Quite-Diddy-Kong-Racing.
