When attaching the exterior base to the body, I clipped as shown in the pattern but machine basted on at about 1/8" ( instead of hand sewing) - it worked great! already planning my second bag from this pattern

Love this bag. May not use the cork the first time I try this but will purchase the pattern and experiment with different materials. Went dumpster diving the other day and found two kitchen garbage bags full of different kinds of materials. Most of it is drapery material, but it was all clean and best of all "free". Thank you so much for designing these patterns for sewing on a domestic machine. I watch a lot of the others on their industrial machines and I would love to have one, but I can't afford it and wouldn't have the room. But I get inspiration from all the bag makers and pattern makers, I just love to watch all of you. THANKS.

I'm very much enjoying your videos, not least as we're both using vintage Berninas. I love that you clearly demonstrate the bags are do-able with a decent domestic rather than just tell us this while sewing on a powerful industrial. Your tip on moving needle position sometimes rather than changing to a zipper foot is very good too but it doesn't occur to those with industrials because their feet tend to be narrower anyway and their needle position isn't adjustable. I'm not an experienced bag maker but I am an experienced sewer of 50+ years and I completely agree with you that the hand basting inside the seam allowance around the trickiest areas makes good sense for a decent finish with less stress and, more often than not, it will prove the more efficient method in the end. :)

How can I reduce this for a child size? Not sure what formula to use. It's for a 7yr old. Any suggestions please..

  • @CountryCowDesigns

The easiest way I’ve found to reduce pattern sizes is to print them at a smaller percentage. So if you print it at 90% for example then it will come out 10% smaller, but the difference is always more than I expect so I don’t recommend jumping down to 80% straight away

I was trying to find that WPC but couldn’t find Little Stitches Sew. Can you provide a link please? I have some 600 denier and some 300 but the 300 is very slippery, not a fan. This one looks more like the 600.

Oh I just found the post. It’s called Paccana and is based in Canada. Apparently they do a few different weight of canvas including 300, 420 and 600 denier. People did mention that their website is a nightmare to navigate and find what you want but apparently their customer service is good if you phone them. I think they might use a different name for it as I can find lots of waterproof fabrics on their website but none are named waterproof canvas so it might be easier to speak to them on the phone.

Ah that’s so frustrating 😣 I think it’ll be that the fabrics were the wrong way round when installing the zipper, the lining fabric right sides together with the zip tape instead of the exterior fabric. These things happen to all of us though, don’t let it put you off trying again 😁
