"(Tell Me I'm Okay) Patrick"
Starring Rachel Bloom
Written by Adam Schlesinger, Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, and Aline Brosh McKenna
Rebecca:
TELL ME I’M OK, PATRICK
TELL ME PLEASE, THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO DO.
JUST ONE LITTLE OK
AND YOU’LL BE ON YOUR WAY!
PATRICK, I REALLY NEED THAT FROM YOU.
TELL ME I’M OK, PATRICK
NO PRESSURE BUT I SERIOUSLY NEED TO KNOW
I REALIZE YOUR OCCUPATION
IS NOT GENTLE VALIDATION
BUT JUST THIS ONCE, PATRICK, GIVE IT A GO.
YOU REPRESENT THE OUTSIDE WORLD ‘CAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW ME
YOUR PERCEPTION OF ME IS COMPLETELY PURE
YOU DON’T HAVE AN AGENDA
THAT’S WHY I NEED YOU TO LEND A
HAND, PATRICK, CAUSE I THINK I’M FINE, PATRICK
BUT I’M ONLY LIKE 43 PERCENT SURE.
TELL ME I’M OK, PATRICK
OR EVEN SOMETHING IN THE BALLPARK WOULD BE NICE
YOU CAN PHRASE IT HOW YOU WANT
YOU CAN MAKE IT NONCHALANT
FORGET THE “O”, EVEN JUST “K” WOULD SUFFICE.
Seriously Patrick, was I sick the day in school they taught you how to be a normal person? It just feels like there's something fundamental I'm missing out on. Like, is there an instruction manual? You get what I'm saying, Patrick? It just - it just feels like everyone is in this cabal of normal people, and they're all laughing at me, like I'm the jester in my own Truman Show. Patrick, tell me what the secret is. Just tell me what the secret is. Is there a manual? Do you have the manual? I know you have the manual, Patrick. I know it's in your truck, Patrick!!
I’M SORRY THAT I YELLED. PATRICK.
BUT I NEED JUST A LITTLE MORE FROM YOU TODAY
SO PATRICK HEAR MY PLEA
MAKE ONE LAST DELIVERY
SAY THE WORD, PATRICK...
TELL ME I’M OK
AM I OK?

Literally what I was thinking
The line "your perception of me is completely pure" is such a rich and psychologically fascinating line. Rebecca honestly believes that the opinion of someone who knows nothing of her life or the nuances of her situation holds more weight and is more trustworthy than the opinions of the people in her life who actually know her. It's almost like she sees herself as a liar and manipulator and believes that the people in her life can't be trusted to offer an objective assessment of her mental state because she has manipulated them into seeing what she wants them to see, so the only reliable viewpoint is that of someone who is free and "pure" of her manipulation. It's almost as if she's chasing after the approval of mainstream society, believing that achieving that approval would finally quiet the incessant voices in her head, but it can't happen through her own close relationships because anyone who gets remotely close to her no longer counts as being part of "society." It's almost as if their very proximity to her has infected them and stripped them of their ability to offer the validation that she needs because she is, in her own words from season 4, a "swirling infectious plague in the shape of a woman," and therefore anyone who loves her must either be lying or have been duped into it. This is why I love this show. Excellent work, Rachel Bloom.

Actually I think that even people who are generally mentally stable can relate to some songs of the show like this one. I mean, everybody has bad days and feels left out or like everything is breaking apart. Although I agree that it is a huge representation for people with mental illness who can relate to this show, it's not just them.

The package playing the piano was a great touch.
I feel the bit about "skipping the day they taught how to be normal in school" in my soul
The first time I heard this song was about 5 years ago maybe. And I can totally relate. It’s the feeling that has been bugging me for years ie me not being normal. Always feel like I’m a little off than everyone else. It felt so relatable, it was so heartbreaking at the time. 5 years after, today, I’m happy to say that I don’t feel the sadness when I heard this song anymore. I understand how one can feel that because I went through it for the longest time. But not anymore. I’m a lot more comfortable in my own skin today. I acknowledge the root cause ie what makes me different. I talked it over with my sister who I just realized felt the same way and I embraced who I am, warts and all. It’s a process for me to get to where I am today, I’m not gonna lie. You have to do the work and surround yourself with kind people if you can. There will be some days that I still hate myself, caring a little bit too much about what people think about me.. but I bounced back easier and faster.. if you are struggling with this, I hope you will find some peace some day.

i never realized that the box was playing the piano XD 1:56
I never noticed the parcel playing the piano when they were both on top of it 😂😂 god I love this show
A wild piano-playing delivery box appeared! That scene was funny AF!
Yo the read on "I know it's in your truck, PATRICK!" is so killer.
my favourite thing about this song, and i love so much about it, is that you could put oz from buffy into this world and he would react exactly the same. seth green cross character continuity makes me so happy
The box playing the piano is hilarious
I relate to this so bad and it makes me sad.
OK. I've given it the weekend and am still holding to my first impression this is the best song of the series so far.
1:49 Seth hilarious as usual without saying anything xD:
the way he listens to her sympathetically is actually really heartwarming
I still remember my bestie telling me how much he loved this, but didn’t know the song was based on Alfie. One of Burt Baccarat’s finest!
That dress is to die for.
One of the best songs & reflects how Rebecca is helpless and so desperate to understand the hard part of the real world. A grown up girl with an IQ of 164 but basically an innocent child! Real tough & complicated song.
I just love when CEG borrows directly from songs that already exist like this. "Alfie" is one of my favorite covers Naya ever did on Glee and so this spoof makes me happy
