Tekton Lore vs. ZU Omen MK I: Battle of the Used Budget Speakers. Only one can be KING!

Музыка

Important Note If you start here, keep in mind this is round one with the base, first gen ZU Omen. Then I review ZU Dirty Weekend II and finally Tekton Uruz, which are essentially a top model Lore by design...
Because you continued to ask...I am finally reviewing the Tekton Lores in depth, but they are not alone! What better way to spice up a speaker review than to pit two badass full range budget speakers together. I will break them down based on Fit N Finish, components and finally (all you care about) is the sound.
You can skip to 18:45 to hear what I think about the sound differences. It was an absolute pleasure reviewing these two cousins. Amazingly I didn't get tired of hearing the same tracks six times over while noting the minute details. There can only be one King and it was a close match.

    Wow! Great review! I really appreciate the painstaking work you did to analyze, compare and present your findings. Due to downsizing of my home & listening room, my Maggie 1.6's still sound great, but are not and cannot be positioned optimally...so I've been looking at replacements. Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the Sub. Either one is terrific, one suites a front room a little better than the other. The ZU Dirty weekends with the footers are pretty open to placement. Tektons do really well in small rooms too, but prefer to be spaced a little further apart in my space and experience. Welcome aboard.

    @@HarmonyHomeInspectionServices Hi Hank, I figured those two floorstanders did not exactly help me "downsize". I ended up with Kef Q350's along with my existing REL sub. I was amazed at the bass and mid bass the Kefs provided. I'm approaching 70 and my high frequency hearing is definitely declining, so for several months I thought about trying B&W's, since so many reviewers bash them for having harsh high frequency output. Well, last month I picked up a pair of 607 S2 Anniversary edition speakers, and am really pleased. The woofer is a full inch smaller than the Kef, yet once again, the bass is great. I'm hearing more detail with the 607's and not missing the larger speakers. It took a little tweaking with the crossover point and volume on the REL but they are great. (607s less efficient than Kefs...so at amplifier same volumes the REL was overbearing with the 607s) Now, nothing in a small box will have the imaging of a 5½ foot tall Maggie, but the Kef and the B&W's provided excellent sound stage and imaging... no regrets! My Parasound integrated allows me to toggle the sub on or off, and when it's off, it's surprising how well these speakers are delivering bass...just the true, very low sub-only frequencies are absent. Both speakers are much more dynamic at lower volume levels than the Maggies as well. The Maggies became colorless and dull at lower volumes.

If you take the example of "the cheap audio man" for instance, he is full time You Tube now and I think he has become sucessful for the reason that he doesn't take himself too seriously gives his honest opinion and puts out content. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the DW MkII . also was thinking of going full boat to a long term speaker now like the Omen Def or Soul Supreme with the better tweeters and cabinets. Would be great to hear a review between one of them and a comparable Tekton. I have heard the Tekton's in person at the audio show in the DC area and they are amazing but crazy looking and looks and fit/finish is a factor to me. Not sure what you consider budget monoblocks but I feel if I am going to move up to them from a single amp, I probably need to spend at least $3k for a pair. Thank you.

    In 2020 I wanted to upgrade my Elac Debut B6.2 stand-mounts to a floorstander so I was looking at the Zu Dirty Weekend's and the Tekton M-Lore which is the smallest in the Lore series. The DW's that I wanted were the blue maple and I wanted the cap upgrade. When added all together they were going to run about $1,800 including shipping. The M-Lore's I wanted included internal upgrades for caps, wiring, transducer and binding posts and were $600 for the base speaker and $200 for the upgrade for a total of $800 including shipping. I went with the M-Lore's for the cost savings alone. My room is really challenging because it is a multi-purpose 13x11 space and I just couldn't justify spending $1,800 when I could get similar, if not better, sound for $800. From the photos that I've seen the fit and finish of the Zu's is the winner but the finish on my Tekton's while not a nice woodgrain is done very well - nearly comparable to an automotive paint finish. I have no regrets purchasing the Tekton's because they give me at least 95% of what I was looking for.

  • @2ChannelListening

    @2ChannelListening

    3 жыл бұрын

    Greetings Bob and thank you for watching. Well, sounds like you already have a winner on your hands too! Fit N Finish is a funny thing - Tekton's arguably give the best "out the door" bang for the buck, ready to play solution for those that are not DIY'ers. As you say, the ZU win in the fit N finish department, hands down, but one cannot justify the additional $1,000 to get there. That's why I wait (sometimes too impatiently) for these models to come up on the market used. One cannot be picky about the color of finish too much at that point, the prices are depreciated enough to ignore it. Enjoy those M-Lores, you will not find a better "sounding" speaker at those price points and that can work with smallish rooms. Stand mount speakers are an entirely different compromise. Cheers.

    I've owned both of these speakers. Mine were the Dirty weekend MKII version. Standard cap. The Lores were also standard. I agree with your opinion. The Lore's beat the Omen's. @@2ChannelListening Appreciate you taking time to respond...I thought that this was the case. What is interesting is that on the Tekton site, Eric has received feedback (negative) about his recent price increase and has decided to roll back pricing and cannot guarantee how long it will last. What is frustrating is that he has been unable to produce many of his products, especially the Lore line, due to supplier issues during Covid. I am sure that the supplier problem will be fixed along with the expiration of the price rollbacks. lol

    The main difference is the approach to the tweeter, and how it is crossed over - and the dispersion of the 10" woofer with it's whizzer cone vs a dome tweeter. Physics can't be bent - when the wavelength of the sound approaches the diameter of the driver - the dispersion will get narrow. If the whizzer cone is 3 1/2", the Zu will get narrow at 3858Hz.

    To be fair, once you get a Zu DW with the upgrades, the real comparison would be to also compare the Lore with the upgrade package (caps, inductors, cabling and connectors), not the standard Lore. Great review though! I agree about the bass complexity with the Zu design and ended up ordering the Lore's myself.

  • @2ChannelListening

    @2ChannelListening

    Hi KG, its actually a little more complicated with the ordering. You can get a DW in Hickory as a MKII with the upgraded tweeter and its still $1099. MR Clarity is another $100 and Jupiter adds $200. So the DW MK II standard in black, is apples to apples with base Lore at $999. Last time I could price the Lores with upgrades in a cart, it was nearly $1,385 with standard paint finishes. Thanks for watching and sharing your ZU experience.

    Really informative comparison and speakers description. The only thing I didn’t get yet is how complex the crossover filters are. The ZU's rely on a single 1.1uf 250v cap and one resistor on the Tweeter, nothing for the full range Eminance. That's why the tweeter is not meant to kick in until 10k. The Tekton, I believe is a simple 2nd order. One 1.1uf 250v cap, resistor and air coil per driver. The handoff is supposed to be lower at 5k, at least that's how my Uruz were set up. I just picked up a pair of circa 2017 Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekend in dark hickory, and heard them up against a pair of $12,000 (at the time of purchase) Tyler Acoustics speakers. These were gorgeous speakers, HUGE speakers, well over 6 feet in height. Both were played using a version of the Parasound amp, the DW's on the A21 and the Tylers on the JC5 I believe. Both used the PS Audio Gaincell DAC/Preamp and fed with Bluesound Nodes. The Tyler's were in a very nicely treated room. There were no sub woofers involved in either system. The gentleman I purchased the Dirty Weekend speakers from, is the original owner of both sets of speakers, and we spent a couple of hours listening to both. I have to tell you, the Tyler's sound very nice, but in the end, what the Zu Omen Dirty Weekend speakers did, outshined the 12x more expensive Tyler's. Even my friend had to admit that. I told him that later over the phone, as I did not want to insult the man in his own house. He agreed with my thoughts, the Zu's were just different in a good way, more sparkle and separation. I would love to hear their more expensive offerings. Also, these are incredibly finicky speakers. Every change I made changed the sound signature. I think the preamp is the piece that will make the largest difference in sound. My friend ran both of his setups with that PS Audio Gaincell DAC/Pre. He has one for sale, I want to buy it, but he is already having sellers remorse, and I cannot blame him. I am planning on doing the tweeter upgrade the the DW's. After reading these comments, I wonder how much time folks spent dialing these speakers in? Right now, I have them on carpet, 1 1/4" at the front, using carriage bolts, and 1/2" at the back. I also toed them out a bit. The soundstage was much improved, as well as instrument separation. I had the Emotiva XPA-DR2 with the Denafrips Athena preamp using the Venus II 12th DAC. The DR2 sounded thin, almost class D. I also have the KLH Model 5, and the DR2 really shined with those. I put the old XPA-2 back in the system and they smoothed right out, that thin sound disappeared. And this is where I am hearing the preamp. When compared to what I heard in regards to the PS Audio Gaincell, right now the preamp is the issue, at least in my mind. Very finicky speakers. I want to find two pieces of slate or marble tile, 16" x 16" to use as a base for these DW's. I have some Maple slabs that I tried, but the DW's actually sound better on the carpet. Just wondering if a harder and more reflective surface, like my friend had these on would be an improvement. I still believe this is all going to boil down to the preamp. I wish I would have kept my Schiit Freya S now just to give it a shot. I believe the Athena is holding the Zu's back. My friend agrees, he had two Athenas, and settled on the Gaincells.

Thank you for sharing your journey and experience with your new DW, congratulations, I hope they bring you much musical enjoyment. Cheers!

    I nearly bought Zu a few years ago but the tricky placement was a factor that led to a more room friendly speaker. The Lore really does sound great anywhere but really opens up with lots of space - like most towers. Thanks for the videos really great work.

    I have Lores , haven't compared them to Zu's but have compared them to a pair of very highly regarded 3000/pair monitors .The Lores beat them almost across the board . Refinement is great in terms of sonic characteristics, but to my ear which speaker delivers like you are in the recording session or small live venue with a top notch audio system . That describes the Lores to me . Refinement has to do with source and amplification very much as well . I'm using a 70's vintage Luxman integrated biased into class A . Either of these speakers will respond very well to lower watts , class A designs .

    Thanks for posting your experience Art. Yes, I have used a Luxman 550ax in the past, wonderful integrated amp that boasts more than enough watts to rock either design. The Lores always interested me, however, I did own the Enzo XL's. They did some things nicely, but ultimately I did not like the very forward upper mid-range around 4khz. Did the Lores & Pendragon share the same tone profile? I'm wondering if that is Tekton's house sound.

  • @2ChannelListening

    @2ChannelListening

    Hello JP, the configuration of the Enzo XL, Pendragon and Seas Pendragon all have to do with how Eric sets up the crossover with his tweeter array. You hit on why my Seas Pendragons did not last in my house. They do have a house sound that does not respond much to gear or infinite placement tweaking. The Lores on the other hand are much more like the ZU house sound, open, big and plenty of inner detail. They let the 10" B102 do the hard work instead of the tweeters.

    Honestly, your receiver would equally well with both. The Marantz would lend a nice warm tone to either speaker, you should decide which of the two fits better with your personal preferences, room esthetics and sound...Lore will give you a bit more bass, ZU has a better "mate acceptance factor". In normal times, Tekton is quite approachable as a company. Eric Alexander likes to experiment. The science behind his tweet array is genius. Too tedious to go into it here. I like their huge tower speakers, the UlfBehrt. Sean Casey over at Zu has a different, but just as great approach. Like seeing American designers back in. RSL is back in business and so is ESS who still owns the rights to the Heil Air Motion driver, which does have phasing problems, but man, still clear as a bell. I think ess heils when used with a 12 inch woofer does have timing issue, as the AMT (Heil) is fast, because it is a transducer. I have had better balance with my 8 inch woofer 2 way with the heil made in the 80s. I had a pair of ESS tempest 12 inch two way and replaced the woofer with a Pyle, a much better designed driver than those used by ESS, with a tighter bass. The phasing distortion was much less noticeable. But, alas my improved Tempests were stolen. Darn. ESS and RSL still support their old speakers, btw. Should you pick up a damaged pair and want to restore them, both companies make it easy. essspeakers.store/ and rslspeakers.com/ as you are into vintage equipment. I know I know, I have a passion for these two companies. But, I prate on. (Wait till I get to the unknown receivers no one wants, but turns out the Lafayette LR 9090 was designed by Setton and their 120 db was actually a Luxman) Maybe Dual turntables will come back. YES It is odd how many speaker designers are in Utah. I think all of them work together, like a large think tank.

He went to Best Buys Magnolia room and they showed him B&W R800 series for $3500 and a Marantz 11 channel receiver for $1500. What do you suggest for a small room TV and Music for $3000? I would suggest a Marantz SR7013 or Yamaha Avantage 2070 or 2080, these are new enough to have all the nice features, but depreciated enough to be more affordable than a brand new unit. As for room size, I would absolutely look at Starke Sound on-wall speakers. I love mine, bought on Thanksgiving clearance. I have a 3.1 set up in my bedroom. He can also look into RBH speakers. I also wouldn't overlook Aperion Audio Novus speakers. I love Sony X90J for the price. I own two of them - I only suggest what I've owned and worked with... Have fun!

    Hello Capa. If you have a "very well treated" room, I absolutely would recommend Magneplanar 3.6R's or 3.7's. With excellent front end gear, they are amazing, but dominate a room and take a lot of patience during set up. Many dipole speakers when set up correctly with good gear can give you an amazing soundstage with depth. They have just as many drawbacks though...room set up is crucial.

    I especially like the look &... (now i know) ...the fit & finnish of the Zu-s. The Zu's cabinet was heard by me to be far better braced / damped than the Tektons. Audax gold domes were said to be one of the very best back in the 80's. That French... (back then at least) ...company stopped making them at one time, causing at least one.. (or the only) ..u.k. hi'fi equipment DIY kit co') ...'World Audio" to take their bigest, most expensive kit off their listing, their mag' saying something like: ' It was the best tweeter the'd heard & knew off anywhere near it's price point & unless, if or until they can find a suitable replacement, they've no more gold-dome kits to sell' Not surprised you liked the Tektons better considering what a lot of reviewers are saying. I've long liked very sebsitive (above say 96'db/m/1watt, pref higher, they seemed to have an immediacy to things like the snap of a snare & better dynamics at lower vollunes & ...etc etc than current hungry speakers. In my price boundary at keast. My first s/h above average sensitive speakers were large sealed-box Tannoys built in 1969 (time faded signed & dated test pass labels stuck on their rears confirmed. Bought in 1995 s/h for (£100 & £20 del) from school yard sale.. (they were both connected in series to the school's rest room radio since 1969 the guy said) ..& perfect order till 1 driver bit the dust a few months ago, (non foam-edged = unfixa le now, they broke after a mere 53 years from new!!!) Also good for valve gear. Hence i'm trawling through speaker reviews

    That little gold Audax is a gem for sure, now everything is Beryllium or Ceramic for the show offs. I do fall for ribbon tweeters rather easily, nice gentle presentation. @@2ChannelListening I've seen but never heard the Tannoy Monitor Red drivers but folk hold them in higher regard than the slightly later made monitor golds & prices of working units reflect that on e/Bay i noticed, if youve heard the reds, youve already heard the best Tannoy D.C's i reckon. There was an older, original monitor "Silver" that fetched the highest prices for whatever reason? They all seem basically the exact same construction & all those Tannoy d.c. drivers were made with an engineering quality ive not seen thd like off from later products, even Tannoy's later HPD series of D.C. speakers with perishable (after 20'ish years) foam surrounds are not as high quality as those earlier Silver, Reds or Gold series. I could tell by the 20'ish screws & washers tightness & their sharp defined unscratched screw-heads that nobody had been in my Mon Gold cabs when a cone bit the dust & considering they were made in 1969, i thought that an amazingly good engineered design. Harbeths are a great sound, i much prefer Harbeths to the small & highly acclaimed (overly so, imo) BBC spec'd Rogers LS3/5a (i think is the number) those had no bass compared to any Harbeth that is even slightly larger than those Rogers, which are good for very small rooms but hideously over priced s/h. I have all my sources, pre's & amps sorted & expect my next speaker buy to be my last. I am drawn to what ive heard said about the Tekton range. Now i'm listening to 1989 Cellestion 3000 i stashed over 20 years back when i got the Tannoys, theyre standmount with a full height 17" or 19" inch single ribbon doing all above 900'Hz, great sound but they fall short in the deep & upper bass & dynamics the Mon' Golds gave me, but they'll do for now. Best wishes

There are times when any type of rock music just doesn't have the clarity and sense of detail that can show off a great system to it's best. There are exceptions...most Dire Straits and some of the earlier Elton John hybrid CD's. Another great female voice...Loreena Mckennitt. And for clarity, try something a little closer to jazz...and that's not a four letter word. Hi Blue, certainly. You can call the 104's absolutely neutral and even a bit subdued at low volume. With the Tekton/ZU sound, one is getting more presence, a livelier sound with little wattage used. Its an open energetic quality, where the British sound is flat. I certainly would say the KEF favors the symphonies and the Tekton/ZU's kick butt with small ensemble jazz and acoustic rock. I guess that's my personal preference having lived with both.

    Hi Thomas. I have no reference for comparison, no experience with the Gold's, I believe I've only heard the Red version in a custom box and it was an all tube system on vinyl. I can compare them anecdotally to the D700's I owned, the ZU's are far more efficient and preferred to the D700 sound for my taste. The D700 was not at all efficient as stated, my 17 watt tube amp couldn't drive it with any decent performance, but I didn't match it well so that's my fault (see excellent test review linked). The ZU are a very flexible speaker, working well with 10 watt integrated amps and even better yet, explosive with big watt mono blocks. I think I have a pretty good future, like for like, driver comparison when I get my hands on some Tannoy T-225's with their concentric 10" driver and 10" passive radiator. www.hificritic.com/blog/the-tannoy-700-dual-concentric

    Since a late teenager, till today, all my hi"fi buys were & are s/h except for some just 3 or 4 of my phono cart's, one Ming-Da valved 2'box phono-stage & 2 Jungson 99C power amps, direct from China & all about 50%, (before del') of a u.k. importers price, folk say "but distance & service problems!" Luckily (for hi'fi risks) as a electrical technician in diff' fields for over 35 years, internal faults dont worry me (except a very rare transformer meltdows, ive never had happen or a speaker suddenly starting a concophonous rumble sound of voice-call / magnetic-gap rubbing, showing cone's linear alignment is whack & no spares ...killed my last fave (£120) Tannoy 15" dual concentric cone of my most vintage fave's ever for nearly 20 yrs, roughing it now with old post upgrade / sidegrade speakers till get something better. It's either high performing (well beyond price) new stuff ...otherwise, s/h will remain with me till i'm too old to move. I always take a cheap (0.2 to 775'mw watt) pocket size white noise (full audio frequecy+) signal injector, the 2 probes clipped on the speaker terminals, an ear as close to each cone as possible & hear all drivers doing a quiet smooth 'wooshing' sound throughout it's full frq' range & distortion will be, gritty & obvious as a dead cone. Same into amp's line input, 8 or 16 Ohm max headphone but wired directly to each channel's speaker outs, amp vollume up, same sound as speaker test is heard = fault, then i say 'thanks but it or they're faulty' & goodbye. One guy said "No, pay up first & then do what you want with it" i only asked for a look under the hood with ready pocket sized, multiple swivel headed driver, because i noticed the 6 or so scews on the back pannel were different types & a big red-flag, you learn fast after first swallowing lies & trusting impicity. I never trust sellers who don't invite you in for demo & want to meet you in a garage half way.

    @@2ChannelListening Yeah, but it's not by any means perfect but it gives an edge & can sometimes save the hassle of getting your money back for faults not easy or impossible to catch on a quick demo. My bigger beef was with hi-fi items i bought s/h that worked fine on demo & for a week or so at home but then they broke down, that's happened few times over the decades & in my experience, it was from faults where components had necessarily been replaced but the main cause of why they had failed hadn't been adressed & those components brake down again either quickly or after a short time, usually because of too much current draw heating them up, once it was because a Quad 50E's.. (£1.20'pence it cost to buy) ..single zener diode that should have regulated the output stage's current draw had gone open-circuit on one channel & been missed by an incompetent repair poser, there's no quick test at the sellers place for those annoying buys, more than once i was sure the seller was half aware of the problem, fixed it incompletely again & planned to only play it to demo before a sale, knowing it wont work after too many hours. If they had instead taken it to a worthy electrician... ...

    There usually is a disconnect with designer/owners and their public - its more rare when you do get a personable public centric owner who's adept with the social interactions. Maybe someone at Tekton will see this and understand a bigger need?

    These two designs are basically DIY loudspeakers sold with a lot of marketing/social media hype. The best 1K loudspeakers on the market is Emotiva Airmotiv T2+ which are well designed inside and out. A Russky opened ‘em up and they’re flawless inside. A neat construction. SVS is another brand with attention to details inside and out. So much for the “American made” label. ‘nuff said. Btw, I own Klipsch Heresy III with an SVS SB-3000.

    Hello Brian, I do not want to pull out a pretend time machine maneuver and say I can give you the exacts. However, certain speakers do stand out as very rememberable, especially when it involves disappointment with a favored brand. I'm grateful my first ZU was the Essence and not the first gen Omen. Dynamically speaking, the Omen v1 was veiled and recessed sounding compared to the base Lore. Quicker, more immediate open sound from the Lore on every kind of track and genre. That's why I say in round two with the Dirty Weekend, they are a full 30% better in all aspects of performance compared to the Omen v1. Snare and Tom's snap with good rolling decay. Even with the same volume levels, it was like the Lore were always 3 db louder and the DW MKII were 6 db louder. (they weren't, its just how the other two audibly operated when rotating tracks. Hope this helps.

    Not gonna go there? Why? Do you value the hurt feelings of a manufacturer over consumers who spend their hard-earned money on this hobby?

  • @2ChannelListening

    @2ChannelListening

    3 жыл бұрын

    Two things, this would have created in your words me being even more "rambly". Second its a fine line in taking a manufacturer to task in a constructive way, like I did with my ZU vs. Tekton comparison. Pointing out costing differences, material use differences and final price for product versus COG's. Plus, I want to be careful that maybe my experience with a few manufacturer products might be an outlier or freak one off. Axiom speakers is an example - they left me high and dry, but other owners love them. Watch my Alta IO review, I think I tell it like I see it in a fair manner - but I am biased :-) Thanks for watching, and asking.
