The one thing that hurt Tekken Tag was its System 12/Playstation roots. Not having more than 2 characters visible on-screen at once was really obvious compared to DOA2's tag mode. I'm glad its sequel, some 3 games and a platform upgrade later, didn't have its visual limitations.

Well, the namco system 12 arcade hardware was just a bit better than PS1 and is based on slightly upgraded 1995 hardware . PS2 was 5 years more advanced hardware. Soul Calibur Arcade was based on older hardware than Dreamcast. You are right about how the transition was around this time. It was really expensive for Arcade hardware to keep getting upgraded so plenty of games use older arcade hardware to offset the costs. Gradually the home consoles took over . Really sad actually as i miss the arcade scene

When Dreamcast and PS2 came out, it was the last nail in the coffin for Arcades. Arcades are still very strong at the 90s and early 2000s because you can't replicate the graphics perfectly on your home console so you must go to the Arcades for the premium experience. But Dreamcast changed it all. Missed the Arcades booming days but I'm also thankful that arcade perfect ports are now in my comfort of my home.

The PS2 version was necessary and is better. It's not an opinion at this point bro's. I first played the Arcade and enjoy the OST but the PS2 version was a proper update and deserves the respect it gets, if you want to be stuck in 1999 go ahead but the ratings don't lie.
You took the effort to match the CPU opponents in the split screen even though it's randomly generated. And also the stages were matching. The stage number was matching. That's impressive. It must have taken hundreds if not thousands of tries, or there must have been some sneaky way to go about it.
@MONKEYDUDE2701

Tbh i think the game takes into account what characters and which outfits you pick when calculating what enemies and stages you get, so i dont think he needed a lot of tries.
This was that time around the early 2000s when home consoles surpassed arcade, Soul Caliber is another example of this and when the arcade perfect versions of Outrun 2 & House Of The Dead 3 landed on the xbox. The writing was on the wall for the arcades.
@Katana2097
5 жыл бұрын
That's true. Namco used beefed up Sony hardware for a lot of their arcade boards. In the 90s it was PS1 hardware and in the 2000s it was PS2 and then eventually PS3 (a lot of Tekken 6 and DeadStorm Pirates games I've worked with have suffered from what is essentially yellow-light-of-death after a good 10 years or thereabouts - so they are prone to the same issues). Tekken 4 and 5 use PS2 based arcade boards. In a similar case to Tekken Tag's transition from arcade to home - Time Crisis 4 used a similar board based on PS2 for the arcade, but then the game was released on PS3 for the home version hence why it looks more advanced. SEGA used the Xbox based Chihiro board for games like Ghost Squad, THOTD3 and OutRun2 hence why those latter two are essentially arcade perfect on the Xbox. In fact, you can even modify and beef up an OG Xbox to play Chihiro games like Virtua Cop 3. Even Namco used SEGA's Xbox based board for the first two Maximum Tune games. Then eventually everyone started using Windows or Linux OS computers for their games and arcades got mostly boring.

I was mindblown when I first saw the stills for this on a magazine (U.S. Official Playstation Magazine) when the PS2 was first featured along with so many great AAA titles Amazing step up on Namco's end at that time to push the envelope for one of the best FGs.

Namco System 12 is literally a more powerful PS1. love how they did an amazing job making a better game when it got ported to PS2. the same thing was done to Soulcalibur when it went from the arcade (also made on a more powerful PS1 arcade system) and ported to the Dreamcast
The PS2 version is insane but I still like the look of the arcade version. Namco arcade boards are fun to look at.
I remember a couple years ago one of my friends managed to get their hands on a showcase style arcade cabinet and put PS2 TTT inside. Had so much fun for awhile till he decided to get rid of it.
I distinctly remembered this game looking exactly like Tekken 3. I'm glad I wasn't making stuff up in my head.

A fairer comparison would be with the actual arcade monitor display. On the high quality CRT screens they used those games looked awesome, there is a version of mame which attempts to replicate the authentic look with original refresh rates on some old pc crt monitors

Namco ensinando como se fazia um port de verdade pra console.Melhor epoca
A few notable differences either not mentioned or showcased. Despite identical framerates, the Arcade version's game speed is slightly faster, simply, it's just a faster game. Arcade version as typical for arcades is a coin muncher, there are two difficulty settings exclusive to this game not seen in any other Tekken on arcade or console, harder than Ultra Hard, they are Super Hard, and EX Super Hard. The AI tends to grab/throw much more often on Super Hard/EX Super Hard, lots more input reading, AI plays much more aggressively. Given the Arcade version runs slightly faster, the throw/grab spam can make the AI quite an annoying opponent. (Not sure how you unlock characters in Arcade version without using cheats, have already beaten it on Ultra Hard and Super Hard several times, but not EX Super Hard) Arcade, Unknown cannot be unlocked or selected on the character screen, she is unplayable without using cheats. PS2 features her as an unlockable and playable character through legit means. Moku-jin/Tetsu-jin, can be unlocked in both versions, can be selected on the character screen but in arcade the panels are hidden on the left and right sides of the bottom row of the character select screen. PS2 has dedicated panels when unlocked. Have not dug through move list/move properties thoroughly but one annoying difference, probably a glitch, for Michelle/Julia, on Arcade, 1+2 (Twin Arrow) can be blocked even when attacking opponent from behind and causes a block stagger animation instead of hitting/damaging.
Could you do a comparison between Ridge Racer 5 for the arcade and PS2?
Fantastic game. If only it had included the arcade versions music it would have been even better. Its in my top ten fighting games of all time.
the arcade version looks like it was taken from a different timeline where namco released the game on ps1 , so trippy to watch this

1 year between the two games but the generational leap in graphical fidelity is evident, especially back then.

KKKKKKKKK 😂 verdade! Mesmo assim, é uma ocasião rara, muito rara diga-se de passagem, onde um jogo de arcade, passa vergonha perante mesma versão de console!
hi , you are only talking about the graphics , differences between ps2 and arcade , what about gameplay differences between ps2 and arcade ? health bar differences damage differences combos etc?
This was when Tekken characters started catching sudden cases of arthritis in the lower back upon losing...

Anybody who played both versions back in the day will prefer the arcade version. The PS2 version is technically more advanced, but the art style was ugly. The arcade had a far better OST too.
Imagine playing the arcade version where you can barely hear shit, since the music is for some reason WAY TOO loud.. Honestly, I'd say both are good. (Just wish the music on the arcade was more quieter so I can hear the characters voices and sound effects better.)
I don't believe that eddy x hwoarang have a scene, but i don't know what they said

2:57 (Right Side) What's wrong Nina? Giving up already?

Yet, unlike the DC version of Soul calibur, the ps2 version of Tekken was a severe downgrade in terms of image quality and colors. With Tekken Tag as launch title, Namco immediately revealed the major flaws in the PS2 HW. While on DC, Soul Calibur looked better than the System 12 version in every way.
PS2 looks amazing

I agree! That also included the intro for the PlayStation 2 version of Tekken Tag Tournament!
no subtitles???
This game sold many PS2s at launch. The graphics were cutting edge at the time.

not really lol it looked outdated at the time in 2000 with a ridiculous 30 fps. Soul Calibur, also a port from System 12 looked far superior on Dreamcast in 1999, with a buttery smooth 60 fps and more complex character models and lighting.

@@queercommunist I don't know what version you saw but this game looked amazing in 2000 running on a U.S. PS2, the U.S. version had anti aliasing which made it look cleaner than the Japanese version not to mention it also ran at 60fps. You must be thinking of the bad Japanese version.

The PAL port was awfully slow in comparison unfortunately- this was before PS2 games would give you the option for 60HZ. It was also on a blue CD ROM disc instead of DVD format like most other PS2 games. Thankfully we got the play the game at the right speed on Tekken Hybrid years later. For the record, I still think the PS2 version looks really nice. It's aged really well for a launch title in that regard.

No DVD movies sold many PS2's at launch you had to wait till the end of 2001 for the PS2 to take off in terms of any decent games. Dreamcast blew it away when they where both on the market together.
There's no comparison here. The PS2's hardware was far more impressive than the arcade version of Tekken Tag. The arcade cab was essentially an overclocked PS1 with twice the video RAM. If you truly want to see a real comparison you should put Soul Calibur *Dreamcast vs. Tekken Tag Tournament *PS2. That was the real fight for supremacy. I had them both within the first week of their releases and for my money, Soul Calibur takes the win.
Do both versions runs at 60fps?

Yes.
I don’t get why tekken tag didn’t release for PS1 if it had the same engine as tekken 3

Cause PSone cannot manage four characters at the same time.

Likely due to ram as it wouldn't have been able to hold 4 characters at once they would have had to have a long pause as the other characters where loaded into ram like with the Shangsung battles on Mortal Kombat.
