For the many years we have been going to Shaldon to meet up with our good friends and spend a long weekend in the pubs and restaurants in Shaldon and surrounding areas. The pubs are well known to our very good mate and his family, who lives in the village of Shaldon. One night a few years ago at closing time we left the London Inn or The Ferry Boat and saw this ship straddling the harbour entrance ... it was stuck fast...... with a lot of verbal assistance from the sixth of us !!! the Lifeboat and the Pilot boat also assisted us, in eventually sorting it out. Its a very fierce current. We received no recognition for this!!! We will be down there again on Friday. See you then Kevin! Great place Shaldon. My Uncle Case was Chief Pilot for Rotterdam, busiest port in the world, he would have greatly appreiated this seamanship, as would my dad, Commodore of the Texaco Fleet.

Used to work for a firm called Bibby's at Dunball on the River Parrot in Somerset, the grain boat used to turn by driving the nose into the mud bank, then let the current drag it round before reversing out to moor up at the wharf. First time I saw it, I ran off to tell the manager it had crashed. 😁

Knowing this is a Dutch ship and the way it is manoeuvring this is most likely a captain with a background from Rhine barges. I’ve never seen a pilot manoeuvring in that way. It is typical for someone with a background from inland barging. I am sailing on barges and coasters like that from 1980.

Like standing on the tip of Teignmouth beach and see the ships coming in. Making the right-angle turn just inside the bar is impressive. You can hear the engine rumbling as the rudder is put over and see the crew moving only a short distance away - just a few metres. The tip-off is high tide is something is a short time hence and the pilot boat is heading out into the bay. Time to get to Teignmouth and get there to watch another ship come in.
