Tefl: First Lesson in China - 80 Students! (Part Two - End of Lesson)

This is the end of my first ever planned lesson in my first ever tefl job. I am teaching in China. This is the second video - the first shows the begining of the lesson but unfortunately there is no middle video. I have to speak slowly so the students can understand what I am saying. The students are 15-16yrs old.

    Thankyou for posting this video. Im currently doing a TEFL in the UK with the view to teaching in China. You clearly have a natural ability to teach and a genuine interest in doing the job well. I found this to be very inspiring and full of great information/techniques I can add to my arsenal. Thankyou very much for sharing.

    Parts one and two were so helpful!! I learn so much better by watching people do it, and I'm so grateful you filmed the lesson. It makes me feel less nervous, and makes the process seem much more feasible :-)

    Aw yeah, the kids were real sweeties :-) plus, half the time I made such a tit of myself they mostly wanted to sit and watch what idiot things the crazy foreigner would do next! This was one of my better behaved classes - they weren't all as good as this however - in one class a boy actually started a fire... that was a lesson I won't forget! :-)

    I'm very thankful for this video. I've been struggling to find some video references on TEFL for middle school with many students in the classroom. Like many ESL teachers in my country, I never dreamed of being a teacher in a regular school, only in language centers. But today, I'm having an internship as an assistant in English classes in a regular school, due to my university. The reality is: students are never encouraged to speak English, and they hardly ever listen to English in class because the ESL teacher is not used to speaking. Now I can see how effective English classes are supposed to be. Thank you very much.

    Waaaa this is actually REALLY awesome!! You make class seem so fun, I wish I had teachers like this (I'm 17 ^.^)!! I really like how you can actually make people enjoy the classes and have fun while learning. Teachers usually tend to just go on and on sometimes (hehe.....).

    Thank you for making/sharing this video. I'm currently planning a big change, moving from 17years of retail to Teaching English as a Foreign Language, a daunting task in itself. I'm currently researching best options, doing a TEFL course is only one small part of it and I am contemplating higher education which I know will take a number of years. This video has inspired me to certainly go for it, despite the unknown and uncertainty of beginning a new career in my middle thirties!

    Hi, great lesson. I am planning on going to Thailand to teach soon. Just a question. Are you provided with textbooks to work from(with course material/what to teach), or do you just create your own lessons from scratch?

  • @wii60own

    @wii60own

    Usually you will be giving a specific Curriculum to follow and you will make your lesson plan around what goals you are expected to meet. But other schools/private teaching will involve you creating all your lesson plans from scratch. So in other words, there is jobs available in both. So what ever you prefer weather it will be following a plan or making your own there will be work out there for you. Good luck :)

    MrSimjam1980 Thanks, I'm glad you liked it :-) I did have a set textbook which my school asked me to work from but I basically had to make up my lesson plans based on what was in each chapter. It will differ depending on where you go.

    Hi :-) I honestly really struggled to create lesson plans but just kept on researching ideas on various forums and watched a ton of videos. I kept a bunch of notes from my courses and spoke with friends also doing TEFL for ideas and then just started putting things together. I would start with a basic idea of what I wanted to achieve in the lesson and then go back through the plan and work out how to get from point A to B and then B to C... its painstaking but so worth it when you can get up there and know exactly what you are doing. I do think it gets easier as you go along. I found something that really helped was to try acting my lesson out loud in front of a mirror, that way I could get an idea of timings and feel more confident saying what I wanted to say - also, if it didn't make sense out loud I then I knew to go back and tweak it. Hope that helps :-)

    wish i had an english teacher as charming and energetic as you are when i was at high school :) i think the problem with us (most of us at least) chinese learning english is that we focus too much on reading and grammar and don't spend enough time practicing speaking. for instance there are no oral exams until in the colleage so people don't feel the need to practicing. as a result many chinese students are able to read relatively complex articles and score good marks in the grammar part of the exams, while often fail to speak fluent, let alone gramatically correct, english. also, for several reasons (mainly cultural) the range of vocabulary we come across during class is quite narrow. for exmalpe when in comes to body parts they would most likey never teach you words like "penis" or "vagina". i'm not saying that they should teach you those kinds of words so you can have a conversation about private parts in broad daylight but they are important words nontheless.

    I stumbled across this gap in my student's knowledge just last week. They were confused as to whether or not men had nipples. They found it hilarious, but it was a great teaching opportunity. Plus, I now have a ton of material for next week's lessons!

    I thought this was a good steady lesson. Hobbies and likes always are. But please, stop wearing jeans in classrooms - it degrades the teaching profession. Foreign teachers, please show more respect and be more professional in your choice of wearing smart casual clothes - dress to impress. Set high standards is what I like to see best. That's my opinion.
