2:37 “I’ve heard this in a movie once” one last compliment to the great Ennio Morricone who died today at the age of 91. You might not remember the movie but oh the music will never leave your head. RIP.

1.6 million people in attendance. I'm sure the ground sunk in a little bit from all the jumping around. XD
Some in the crowd couldn't see the stage due to the curvature of the Earth.
I'm surprised they didn't immediately go wow that's alot of fans in attendance. Freaking Helicopter flew by. Lol. Good song

What I'm surprised at is that there was any O2 left in the atmosphere in the vicinity, given the rate at which a frenzied (to say the least) crowd of that immensity must have been sucking it in. 56 didn't make it out alive; don't know if it was due directly to oxygen deprivation. -- probably O.D.ing on god knows what.
“That might be stuck in my head...” Yes, this song has been stuck in my head for decades! Great Metallica tune! Thanks and Go Tigers!
Love Lars representing Denmark, with his flag on his kit....lol.
That was just after the iron curtain fell. Russians could now openly love American music. Before that, Western things were black market and technically illegal.

wow i didnt know that!
Before the collapse of the Berlin wall, the west views of the USSR was the big bad wolf, they were our enemies. After the collapse, we started to see them as people. During this concert, it was a total mind blowing effect. They had managed to buy our albums on the black market. Granted USSR was censoring anything from the west but they still managed. We had no idea how they would receive us and they surpassed any concert before. Needless to say, afterward we shared a love for music that crumbled a Communist state.

To be fair, the "big bad wolf" thought process was mutual from the accounts of people who lived through it on the Russian side as well.

@@mr.osclasses5054 agreed. We were so worried about how the bands would be received and to see them perform for such a massive audience. Unreal.

It was the collapse of the iron curtain a metaphor for an invisible barrier between the Ussr & the react of the western countries. The collapse of the Berlin wall was in Germany that separated the country into east / West Berlin.

I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's no other drug like freedom. I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D
@MrAussieJules

No drug like freedom... i like that phrase... we need a concert like this to end the useless lockdowns. Freedom is being eroded..
This was a huge deal at the time. The fall of the Soviet Union. They got to witness, for the first time, something we'd gotten to do for years. I was a teenager and didn't really understand it at the time and it wasn't until years later that I realized what it meant to them in the audience.
Great reaction. You gotta love metal. Thanks.
All that glitters is gold (intro) from the good the bad the ugly
Liking something more than you expected is such a treat. Rock On y'all!
The first bit you heard was L'Estasi Dell'Oro (The Ecstasy of Gold) by Ennio Morricone, from the soundtrack of the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." Check out the Danish National Symphony Orchestra's rendition, if KZread still has it up. Mexican band The Warning took KZread by storm with their rendition of this song; that's also worth checking out. They're a trio of sisters, and they rock.
Great video !! Thanks !!
This may have been the closest we ever came to having world peace
Claire......I just ADORE watching your reactions.........there is a ROCK CHICK inside you just wanting to come out, great channel, great reaction love you guys all the way from Australia xoxoxo
the opening is a snippet of "ecstacy of gold" by ennio morricone from the movie "the good, the bad and the ugly"
All the times I listen to that song.
Y’all should do a video again soon to catch us all up… miss you guys
Awesome show during an important time in history. Great Reaction! 😁
i'll say it again you have got to see them live
Great review I saw them live in 03 unbelievable concert
Always love to see you guys react to Metallica!!! 🤘🤘🤘
Graet to see young people gaining an appreciation of awesome music !!!
Was never a big Metallica fan. Only have one cd. Now i have several dvds. They are a great live band.
Kirk: "plays the badass solo" Kid: that is such an awesome STAGE

Ennio Morricone, the composer of the orchestrated introduction just died today, 6th of July... :/ The song is called "Ecstacy of Gold" and it's from the movie "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"...
Rest in peace, Ennio Morricone

@@Nichwar19 He is the composer of "The Ecstasy of Gold" which is the song that Metallica has used as their intro for their live shows for a very long time.
How cool would it be if we could create a time machine and send a great band like Metallica back in time and have them play in front of millions of people in Egypt or Rome? They would love the band.
Love this one
1st time hearing this version Live in Moscow 1991 totally Awsome, the official video is very good too but a little dark. Metallica ROCKS!!
I was working at a youth camp in the UK at the time the wall fell. It was during a two week international arts and performance camp. When the news broke all 2000 people on site just roared. No one slept that night.
These sisters just witnessed the song power of the Gods.
No phones, everyone enjoying the joy.
i was 21 yrs old and stationed in Berlin. this was the monsters of rock tour, the first western rock concert to ever be played ther, of course the soviet people were getting bootleg music but this was the first consert. it was held at a military air field out side of moscow. i was not allowed to go to this concert because i was in the us army and held a security claerance. so no go
'Wouldn't it be so awesome to be there?' Yes, young man, it was INCREDIBLE! :)

Such a great performance that only Metallica could have put on. Not to lie though, Pantera put on an epic performance at that very same show in Moscow. ACDC as well. The show was free btw.

@Francis Sailo Iron Maiden is my favorite band. Believe me, I think they are the greatest live band ever but Metallica really did kill this performance.
Ecstasy of gold, Tuco giving it.
These guys lived in my town,! I live in a town near San Francisco, so we have a lot of ban members live here!
Wow even more people than ac/dc live at Riverplate but comparable considering that was inside a stadium jam-packed to capacity with drones flying around instead of helicopters
On September 28, 1991 a concert of the Monsters of Rock Tour concert took place at Toshino Airport in Moscow. Shortly before the official end of the Soviet Union. With the support of Time Warner Inc., Pantera, Black Crows, Metallica and AC / DC were flown in to perform. In addition, the Russian band played E.S.T .. In front of a total of 500,000 spectators, the unofficial figures are traded up to 1.6 million. Watch this: Rod Stewart, Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien, 1994: 4,2 Millionen Zuschauer - wow!!!
Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson is a great one to do
This is far from one of my favorite Metallica songs, but one from the black album that I've always enjoyed is 'Of Wolf and Man.' It's severely underrated imo, but if y'all get the chance, I would highly recommend. Such an epic concert though, would've loved to be there.
Their concert intro mainstay is called "Ecstasy Of Gold".
You two should react to arch enemy nemesis at wacken 2016.
I was almost thirteen years old at the time of this concert. 😉
Impresionante
This is from the Monster of Rock concert, there had been so much trouble earlier in the day with the Army and Police beating the crowd (they didnt know how to control them), it was almost cancelled.
Live in moscow? There were over 1.6 million people there, it was crazy. There were soldiers up front to make sure the crowd didn't go crazy but they did (It's a metallica concert, duh) so they literally just threw their helmet off and enjoyed the show, if I remember correctly from the interview metallica did after this show
It was actually closer to 1.3 million but still the biggest concert in history of mankind.
Exit light, enter night. It’s Metallica time.
2 of the most underrated songs by Metallica are Of Wolf And Man and Through The Never. Both have great solos
Metallica is a great example of how much better the live concert experience is. Studio albums are great, but seeing the 4 guys out on stage playing their butts off is a great vibe.
I hope that Claire and Walker never give up that couch !!!
I don't think y'all really appreciate how big that crowd is. There are maybe.... 30 cities in the entire United States that have more people than are at that concert to see Metallica.
ty dad!!!!!!!
You should react to creeping death from the same concert
That chime is the guitar with a wah pedal
hi guys, a little piece of story for you :). Every Metallica concert in that years (for 30 years) started with "Exstasy of gold" (instrumental track of the famous western movie The good, the bad and the ugly) by Ennio Morricone, great italian composer died some weeks ago. R.I.P. Ennio Morricone
Figth fire with fire is great song too.
From 1964 to 73, every band out there wanted to be the Beatles. From 1973 to 1991 every band wanted to be Led Zeppelin. In the 90's every band wanted to be Metallica. I saw them in the Astrodome in 92 when I was forced to work security for the event (Faith No More and Guns and Roses also performed). I was unimpressed with Metallica because every other word (literally) from the lead singer was the F bomb. There was a very active mosh pit in front of the stage and some kid was severely injured. We couldn't wade into that mess and had to wait for some other kid to carry him out. Liliac's rendition of the song is my favorite version. Melody's roar counterparted with Justin's voice set the mood for the song better than any other version IMO.
After the iron curtain fell this was the first concert in Russia official count was 800K ppl
Omnipresent Perception - Beyond Creation
Thor: a hero prone to sit and drink too much. Sounds about right.
There were 1.6 MILLION people at that concert.
I love how you mention the military guys rocking too :D There is actually very big significance to this event. You said there is typical concert stuff going on, but the people attending never had real concerts as you know it. They are forbidden right until the Berlin Wall fall and the dissolution of the USSR. The people there came to the concert because it was free and hosted by the biggest US metal bands of the time. It was the biggest crowd attending a metal concert in history and the military was there to keep people in check. The helicopters are flying around and they scream through megaphones at people "Stop! WTF are you doing?!" Because they did not know what moshpits are or what headbanging is. At some point the military guys took off their jackets and hats and thought "Screw it!" and joined in. It was the taste of freedom for people who were opressed for centuries and generations. It is sad to see what is happening to them and their neighbours now through the hands of one crazy dictator. The 90s in russia were the most free years and people had the most hope. Then it only went downhill.
Like from Panamá✔
This whole concert is nuts. Over 50 people died. Long live metal. \m/
"Thor vibes" I like that
OK now you've seen the original now you check out the cover by the warning it's seriously amazing
It's a lullaby....
Completely unfazed by a million people at a concert.
This was a rare even in history because Russia at those times is not only Russia but The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. Ruled by a dictator at those time and Mikhail Gorbachiv. This was their first concert and a short experience of the people of USSR of what freedom was before the collapse of USSR later that same year.
The beginig part is from Ennio Moricone who just dies a week ago and was the music writer from all the spaghetti western movies
Great reaction should react to pantera domination from the same show absolutely amazing
Fun Metallica Fact #1529: That guitar singer James Hetfield is playing in this video is historic and illegal to own in the US (except for James', it was a "prototype" and was given as a gift). That guitar was made by a company called ESP (Electric Sound Products). A small Japanese guitar co that got famous for making high quality copies of other brands designs. ESP got sued for copyright and trademark violations frequently throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. ESP saw it as free advertising, in fact...it made them the "bad boys" of the guitar world In 1991 Gibson Guitars, an American company, thought they were going to sign James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) as endorsees to their brand. James and Kirk famously played Gibson guitars but were not officially endorsed by Gibson. The guitar that James loved was the Gibson Explorer. in late 1990 ESP contacted James Hetfield and said they would make him a copy of an Explorer but they would make it better and to James' specs. Long story short... Gibson saw James playing an ESP copy of their Explorer and sued ESP. Gibson won in court but got no money from ESP because the guitar in question was not a normal production model for ESP. It was a prototype. However, legend has it that ESP did make at least 3 others. 2 were given to family members of ESP execs, and one was sent to Gibson in Nashville for some good natured rivalry. Gibson claims they did not get one. In the end, Gibson got a federal injunction against ESP for their "Explorer Style Prototype" (ironically also an ESP acronym). The injunction states that ESP Guitars cannot mass produce this guitar, and in the event one is made and imported or carried into the US it will be seized at any port of entry. James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett still play ESP guitars to this day.
I am a big fan of metallica

This music video for this song is great too but this live performance is astounding. I am absolutely freaked out by your non-reaction to the size of the crowd for this "little show" as Walker puts it late in the video. It was about time stamp 10:20 before you even mention the size of the crowd for the first time. Almost 1.7 "million" people gathered together and you don't even react to that. Wow!!! I've seen the video several times, I'm middle-age and it still blows my mind every single time. How can you not be freaked by that? I always enjoy your reactions (even when I don't quite like the songs); however, for the second time, you've almost earned a thumbs down (LOL). Growing is learning if you do it right. Keep rocking!! And yes, I still gave you a thumbs up....this time. You're on strike two. TeeHee By the way, I am just kidding with the above. I do enjoy you both so keep doin' what you're doin'.
