Seth Rogen backs a new rendition of the pizza-chewing reptiles for a new generation, but is this animated take the best film version to date, and do for the Turtles what Spider-Verse did for Spider-Man?

Yes, I am aware this is a very late video, but I spent much of last week with family, and I didn't get to film it beforehand. I would have otherwise scrapped it (the interest is only really there on the US opening weekend), but I promised I would do it, and I didn't want to break that promise to my viewers. I also didn't want to rush it, and make sure it was up to the quality you expect from me.

Not sure if you knew this bit - the reason why Superfly feels like an unfinished character and is shoehorned into the movie, well it is because he IS. Originally, as it would be logical in a TMNT movie with a mutant fly villain, that was supposed to be Baxter Stockman, he was going to go on and create more mutants after his accident, and then at the end turn into a giant monster too. They did the rewrite late in the game.

Finally an animated movie that gives Jackie Chan something to do. He has more to do in this one movie then all three Kung Fu Panda films. Also loved the uses of 'what going on' by 4 non blondes.

The versions of the turtles in this movie were different from the ones I grew up with, but the core of the characters and what made them iconic was still there. Even Super Fly was a pretty good villain. Overall it was pretty endearing, and fun!

I'm still on the fence... I really enjoy TMNT, but with all the weird, and frankly, unappealing iterations Nickelodeon has done in the past dozen years now, I'm fairly confident that I'm probably not going to like this new movie too. That said, I'm sure it's still far better than the Michael Bay abominations; that crap is the lowest the TMNT has ever been. I wish TMNT could once again be like what it was in the late 80s and early 90s, but it's looking like that will never happen.

@@gracekim25 Come on, that's like comparing Kevin Pollak to Carrot Top. Sure, the '87 series is an action comedy, but it's genuinely amusing and appealing. "Rise" is just dumb and annoying. Y'see, the classic series is like the original ThunderCats whereas Rise of the TMNT is like ThunderCats ROAR. From what I've seen of it, Rise is even worst than the 2012 series; and I already dislike that one. ...It's a strong pass.

It is based on the comics, but it does also have references to the previous Turtles films, so it is considered in 'canon' with them, loosely. I think.

17:20 - That's the same thing Lord and Miller did with the Lego Batman movie. They just looked up obscure DC villains on the DC wiki and threw them in the movie for nostalgia-bait. They had no personalities and did nothing, were just... there. Here it is kinda worse because as I understand, all the mutants turn on Superfly and become allies of the Turtles by the end, right? So they will not really function as villains in the upcoming show. Instead of getting their own introductory episodes they were dumped on us. I feel this movie should have been produced AFTER the show has aired, and worked on the established characters from that show. Given that kids today are on Netflix all the time, this would work better too by them looking forward to the movie after seeing the show.

I highly, _highly_ disagree. I would most certainly watch NT:TNM over the Michael Bay abominations. Not saying TNM is a good series (it's not), but I could enjoy it as a ridiculous time capsule of the era (the late '90s was a stupid time).

I kinda had enough of this "makes your eyes bleed out" style of animation, honestly. Spiderverse was a thing, yes, unique in its own right, but that sketchy style coupled with a super low frame rate and millions of characters on the screen just makes my head hurt... and now every animated movie is aping that style as well.

Yeah, it throws all these mutants at the viewer which is only a nostalgia factor for those who grew up with the 1987 show/toyline. It does not help how grotesquely ugly the characters, even the humans are. I honestly did not recognize April at first, not just that she was supposed to be April, but that she is supposed to be a girl. Looks like a guy.

Funny you mention the 2014 Turtles being so ugly because... maaaan this is such an ugly movie too. Not just the Turtles but even the humans have such ugly ungainly designs. I cannot see the toys of the movie selling too well. Thanks for mentioning Lord and Miller and their influence, guess I cannot blame all this on Seth Rogen (who should really have stuck to just voice acting) - these two seem to pop up everywhere with their meta nonsense these days. Much like many of their other movies, I feel like they are just writing stuff that they think about first and think of how that can be adapted to some existing franchise second. Spiderverse was certainly a case of that, because anyone who read the comics would know how much they failed to get the character of so many of the Spidermen in those movies... Not super excited if this will get a cartoon as well. I liked both the 2003 and 2012 iteration of TMNT, rewatched them several times. Rise of the TMNT was terrible though, and I feel this does the same thing that show did - changing things too much, and bringing the focus to other characters and scenarios instead of what made the old shows memorable. Rise only introduced the Shredder too later and failed to turn him into not just a threat, but even a character (he was just a mad force of evil and never even talked). Weird "cause the 2007 movie showed you can do a good TMNT movie without Shredder, but that movie felt more like it was a sequel to the live action ones, or the Mirage comics or the 2003 toon, rather than a new continuity.

Rise isn’t terrible, it’s just not your thing. Don’t be so rude🤦‍♀️ It’s clear you’re very close minded🤦‍♀️ rise has a similar vibe to the 80’s version. There’s NOTHING wrong with doing things differently!😅
