Teenage drummer covers PNEUMA by TOOL
I recently performed Pneuma with a cover band I’m in and a lot of people said they wanted to hear the drums better. This was my first take playing along to the @DrumeoOfficial drumless track, so it’s not nearly a perfect take but I thought people might like to get a closer look at what I’m playing!
If you want to see my bands performance, check out @DrGsVidz channel for that as well as a few other covers we’ve done!
The audio was recorded using an iPhone and the track was played through an amp using Bluetooth. I also noticed a slight ringing that came from the electronic drum I’m using. Suffice to say, the audio isn’t perfect but I plan on eventually trying to get some mics to make the audio quality much better.

Please don't ever quit playing drums. You are seriously talented and could become a successful musician as long as you keep at it. I gave up after high school due to logistical reasons and have regretted it ever since. That was 20 years ago. I still play today and am decent, but I've lost most of my chops and never invested the time I needed to grow and improve. Don't be me! You and your band members are all talented. Keep playing.
This kid is on the WAY UP! I'm here for the ride and I CANT WAIT to see this
you nailed danny's fills from a guitarist/bassist pov flawlessly. that has got to be so damn fun to play. you're gonna go far, kid.
awsome. after Portnoy explained to us how difficult this is Im even more impressed! it was a pleasure to watch

Came here to say that. If an absolute master of his craft (who has been playing for decades) says this is a hard track, I believe him. And you crushed it, man. At 17 years old, you are clearly going places. ROCK ON.
The fact that you can play this so casually at your age is insane. I'm jealous lol, Great job!
Damn dude you have skill. Dont ever stop playing cause you got the gift. Instant sub
Hey man, great cover once again! You inspire so many people like me to start learning Songs above their capabilities. I myself am 16 and I have some drum covers on my channel already. Keep up the work and keep inspiring people!

Wow man…you are ridiculously talented! Keep at it brother!
Very well done young sir! Thank you for turning your stick around to play the crosstick parts 😉 Pro level and sounding better than the last video.

Good call using the drummless track. Let's us hear your work even better

And I’ll add- my plan for the summer is to post consistently on both Instagram and youtube shorts with longer covers posted as full videos on here every week or two if possible! I’ve got a lot to figure out but I’m trying my best to get it going and I’ve got people helping me out so I’m pretty optimistic about keeping it going!
Been jamming tool for about 30 years, keep it up!
Looking forward to watching this young man rise to the top! Go get em!
What a performance!! oO Must have been countless hours of hard work to get you to where ur at... Wish I had had this dedication at your age! Keep up the spirit and dont get lazy due to all the (well deserved) compliments you get here ;-) ;-) Looking forward to seeing more of you and your band mates as well!

Thanks man! I saw your comment about the drumless track too and I agree, it definitely worked well for the set up I’ve got right now. In the future I’m hoping to get drum mics and a recording software and maybe then I can download a drumless track to layer over the mic’d tracks directly without having to record through a phone. Either way- it worked pretty well for this video so I’m happy!
Bad ass cover little homie. 😎 very difficult song to play, I’m impressed.

Thanks so much! I guess I should’ve made it clear- I definitely do a LOT of counting when learning new songs (or especially in my highschool jazz/marching/concert bands), but for this song specifically I’ve been playing and listening to it so long now that most of it is just from feel and I don’t have to count it anymore. Even still- I fully agree, it’s something I’ll make sure to never stop practicing because it is very helpful!

I like how you made the kit a bit like Danny Carey
Anyone who thinks this song is easy, you are mistaken. Nice job, hope to see you in a band making crazy money one day.
wow, great job! you seem to switch between open-handed style, and regular? like, you play the hi-hat using left hand, but then you do the ride and the pad/tabla patterns with the right. that is seriously difficult, and a rare feat, but looks all fluent and natural for you. mad respect.

7 күн бұрын
@@hashbashI’ll check him out! I’ve heard his name mentioned for sure. And as far as my open-handed playing goes, I got to give credit to my dad for that. He’s a left handed drummer and open handed playing seemed like more practical than a full lefty setup (especially if he ever wanted to play on anyone else’s kit) so he got me to try it out too. I sometimes switch to cross over when I play with my schools jazz band but I love being able to play open for my kit at home!
Fucking awesome 👍

@@Dacoolestguyindawrld Honestly I think I’m somewhat ambidextrous. My parents said when I learned to write I’d constantly swap hands until they chose to just teach me right handed. My dads a left handed drummer though so when I started he encouraged me to try open handed drumming and I love it!

@cassiodrummer
Ай бұрын
@@beatlemania54 he sets his kit up similar to mine- so technically right handed but the hi hat is much lower than any cross handed player would play on. He still has a ride on the right though so he swaps hands for grooves all the time which is pretty awesome.
nice one :D
That smile at 10:22...
Awesome performance man. Since you are playing on an electronic kit you might want to look into the methods it offers to record your playing. In many cases these kits can connect directly to your pc. This enables tons of options when combined with some recording software (Which can be expensive, but I'm pretty sure some very good freeware is not difficult too find). If you load the drumless track into this recording software and make it play and record your drums as a separate track, you will end up with your playing synced to what you are actually hearing in your headphones. In most cases this is cheaper than investing in microphones, and (opinions may differ) could offer better quality as you would be monitoring the signal from your kit directly instead of indirectly with the mic (where positioning and acoustics will influence quality of result signal) Maybe you already know this, or even know better what you want than me, and this isn't of use to you. I just read your description and thought maybe it would help you save a few bucks.
@cassiodrummer
7 күн бұрын
Oh thanks! I actually already ended up getting a mic set for as cheap as I could and it sounds pretty decent! I have an old 8 channel mixer that I can use for recording (and then getting those tracks on my computer for further mixing once I get a DAW, which I’ve found some free ones that might work for now). For the electronic drum I use I can get a direct out into one of the line inputs on the mixer which is great as well, but I’ll have a bit more trouble shooting to do once I get some midi electronic drums. Luckily I’m only in highschool and can use a lot of the money I make working part time for this gear though cause you’re totally right, it adds up fast!
you guys killed the song live! Pneuma is one of my faves to play, and i'm so glad i play the guitar and not the drums! fiendishly difficult do you count it or play it by feel? i play it entirely by feel, i have no idea what the signatures are lol great stuff!
@cassiodrummer
Ай бұрын
Both me and the guitarist in my band have talked about this- we play it almost entirely by feel! I need to practice the “spirit” lyric section a lot though because I honestly rely too much on the guitar for the feel. When we performed it I couldn’t hear the guitar well and so I screwed up there a bit but I’ll be sure to not let that happen again!

My band is actually planning on writing some original music over the summer! Writing complex music is a whole different beast than playing it so I think it might take a while to get into a groove but we’re definitely going to start trying to find our own unique sound and style!
How many hours did you put in to learn this song? Great job!
@cassiodrummer
Ай бұрын
I’ve been telling people I’ve been working on this for a year and a half but I just realized time has gone quicker than I thought- I tried to learn the first verse and chorus almost 2.5 years ago, but the rest was too complicated and I didn’t have the chops for the solo. I stopped practicing it for over a year while I did highschool drumline so my chops improved a lot, and when I finally revisited this song a few months ago I learned the rest in a couple of weeks. Whether or not I put tons of hours into this song specifically isn’t necessarily important- I still put hundreds of hours into building all of the skills that I directly needed to play this song. I’ve also been learning a lot of other tool songs for about a year now so I’ve gotten much better at learning Danny’s drum parts quickly cause there are some skills or stylistic things that he does a lot in all of the songs. Anyways that’s not a specific answer but basically- a lot of hours!
