In my personal view Steve Perry is one of the greatest tenors of all time, and one of the best high male voices you’re ever going to hear. His singing has been described as having “skyscraper notes” and it’s true. And as if all that tremendous upper range wasn’t enough, he also has so much feeling and heart to his vocals. He has to be among the best singers in rock as well as pop. Those astonishing high notes at the end get everybody, and the concluding piano solo is very accomplished and tasteful.

I remember reading that Steve's mother, who was also a singer, worked with him in a classical sense to train his voice at an early age. So, this gave him such an advantage in his range, sound projection, and control. Love Steve and Journey sine they came into the scene since 79. Lights, is my favorite since it reminds me of the bay area and local vibe you feel when you have lived there. Thank you for listening to this classical song. It does not get old.....it makes you hunger for more bands like this in the current scene.

Steve Perry is the master of the mixed voice; his tone is the same from the top to the bottom of his (counter tenor) range. And of the open vowel. The GOAT of rock singers. It was explained one time in a reaction video. That Steve Perry's voice is immensely amazing! The way he belt out his pitch and his tone in these songs, he puts emphasis mostly on the h sound, which allows him to get those notes to come out so clearly in live performances such as this.

Everyone in Journey is a stellar musician, they began as a Jazz-Fusion Prog band in the early 70s, if you heard their first album you wouldn't believe it's the same band that wrote "Don't Stop Believing". Steve Perry joined them on vocals for their fourth album "Infinity" and that's when they really took off commercially but they never stopped playing at a high level. Neal Schon is one of my favorite guitarists, you always know when it's him playing and he can shred with the best of them but he always plays for the song.

Let's also consider that this is a live concert of a rock band. He's singing full tilt like this after singing many other songs in the set, running around, and audience engaging. It's pretty spectacular when you think about his voice control. BTW there's a note in a song by Journey called, "Wheel In The Sky," that most new viewers don't realize is Steve Perry singing, they think it's a guitar note. Watch that video and see if you catch it! Love your reaction-new viewer here.

Steve Perry (vocals) was an undiscovered talent in the 70's... He performed for years in bands in California, but never seemed to get the success. In 1977, just after he walked away from music briefly, Perry was contacted by a manager to audition for a band called Journey... Neal Schon (guitar) was a talented guitarist who was discovered as a teen and joined the Santana band, playing alongside Gregg Rolie (keyboards/ vocals) and the legendary Latin fusion guitarist Carlos Santana... The breakup of the Santana band in 1973 prompted Schon & Rolie to form a fusion rock band Journey w/ Ross Valory (bass)... their debut album dropped in 1975, but the band had limited success after 3 albums w/ Rolie on lead vocals... Their label wanted the band to hire a frontman as a lead singer by 1977 and started looking for singers... Robert Fleischman was hired briefly in '77, but didn't work out. Their manager decided that Steve Perry was the right voice for the band. Initially, Neal Schon was not sold on Steve Perry joining Journey (his singing style was very pop-oriented), but Perry had songwriting skills that Journey needed desperately... Steve Perry recorded vocals for their 4th album 'Infinity' (1978) and they scored a hit single - 'Wheel in the sky'... Steve Smith (drums) joined for the 5th album 'Evolution' (1979) and Journey was becoming commercially successful w/ more hits like "Lovin' touchin' squeezin' " ... 6th album 'Departure' (1980) was a top ten hit record w/ the huge single - 'Any way you want it'... However, founding keyboardist Gregg Rolie left Journey soon after. In 1981, the MTV era began and Journey score the biggest record of their career - 'Escape' (1981) w/ Jonathan Cain (keyboards) joining... the record sold 10 million copies in the US and made Journey a major arena rock band... It was followed by another hit album 'Frontiers' (1983)... Steve Perry's songs and voice made him the star of Journey, but the band was struggling internally... In 1985, Steve Perry wanted a certain sound on the next album and opted to fire Ross Valory and Steve Smith, enlisting session musicians for the album 'Raised on radio' (1986) and tour... Unfortunately, Steve Perry was experiencing burnout by 1987 and opted to put Journey on hiatus. Schon and Jonathan Cain formed a new band Bad English and released 2 albums... Steve Perry released solo albums... Ross Valory, Steve Smith and Gregg Rolie released 1 album in 1991 as The Storm... In 1996, Steve Perry decided to bring Journey back together to work on new music - Schon, Cain, Valory and Smith all returned for the album 'Trial by fire'... it was a platinum success. Journey was looking to touring for the first time since 1986. But in 1997, Steve Perry was diagnosed w/ a condition after an injury to his hip that needed surgery... Unable to tour, Schon made the decision w/ Cain to carry on the band without Steve Perry in 1998. In 1998, Journey released a song 'Remember me'... featuring new vocalist Steve Augeri... the band began touring again w/ drummer Deen Castronovo (from the band Bad English) and Ross Valory (bass) w/ Neal Schon (guitar) and Jonathan Cain (keyboards)... Journey released the album 'Arrival' in 2001... However, singer Steve Augeri developed vocal issues recording the next album 'Generations' (2005)... He was replaced in 2006 for the tour... In 2007, Journey was looking for a new singer when Schon saw vocalist Arnel Pineda on KZread singing Journey covers in the Philippines. He contacted Pineda and flew him to audition. Arnel Pineda debuted on the Journey album 'Revelation' (2008) and the band experienced a huge resurgence in popularity, even without Steve Perry on vocals. Journey released 'Eclipse' in 2011 as Journey's catalog of music was in huge demand as the band toured w/ Arnel Pineda on vocals. However, drummer Deen Castronovo was fired after being arrested in 2015... Steve Smith (drums) rejoined for a massive 2018 stadium tour, but then, both Smith and bassist Ross Valory were fired in 2020 after legal disputes... Journey completed a new album 'Freedom'... but Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain were both embroiled in legal dispute over the band's finances by 2022... Former singer Steve Perry also filed a lawsuit in this time... Journey carried on touring w/ Pineda, but the conflicts between Schon and Cain are still unresolved. Steve Perry announced a new solo album 'Traces' in 2018, his first since Journey's 1996 album 'Trial by fire'... Perry also released an album of Christmas music 'The Season' in 2021.

Great reaction, Aaliyah; you looked so happy and delighted by what you saw and heard 😊 There's a lot of highlights to this song (and this particular performance); for one the high level of musicianship in general, but especially Perry's vocal performance, and the two guitar solos.😃 But I am especially glad that your reaction included the amazing piano solo by Jonathan Cain; most reactions that I have seen of this song (or live performance) did not include that for some reason. 😊 One of the things that have always impressed me about this song, is that even thought it is quite a dark (or emotional) subject matter, they always managed to make me feel uplifted, somehow. I guess that is what great music can do? 😄🥰 As always, hope you are doing well, and all the best to you! 😊

By far one of my favorite bands. Perry's voice was incredible. as was the entire band. Perry left the band in 1987 and they went through a number of lead signers. It might interest you to know that Arnel Pineda, a Filipino singer who sounds remarkably like Steve Perry, became Journey's lead signer in 2008. As always, thank you for your reactions of what I consider to be some of the greatest music of all time (although I am also a huge opera fan as well). Looking forward to the next one.

Steve Perry is a countertenor who sings in the range of a high tenor to a solid alto. Among the few tenor altinos, he is considered to be incomparable due to his incredibly rare countertenor voice. Saw them live in 79 and 82 and Steve is renowned for his countertenor vocal range and the same live as recorded, just phenomenal...Dubbed "The Voice" In the Top “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”...Thanx so much, Great reaction, Peace

Journey and I were born in San Francisco. I grew up listening to Steve Perry as the lead singer. Written by Steve Perry. Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon. Cain on piano 🎹 He replaced the retired Greg Rolie. This is 1 of the best singing efforts of Steve Perry in the Escape album. 🤯 This is 1 of the reasons I model my singing after him! 🤯 He lists Sam Cooke as 1 of his influences. Coincidentally, they share the same birthday 🎂. 40 yeats ago cake. Steve Smith of Journey played drums 🥁 for Bryan Adams in his song Heaven 🎵. Also, Bryan Adams opened for Journey in their world 🌎 tour. Falsetto! 🤯 Jon Bon Jovi named him The Voice. 🤯 See also Steve Perry as a solo singer. Journey broke 💔 up. It split into Bad English and The Storm. But those 2 broke 😢 up. Steve Perry reunited Journey. Then, he left again! 😖. Filipino singer Arnel Pineda is the current lead singer for Journey.

I really enjoy your positive and fresh perspective as you react for the first time to the groups, singers and bands I was listening to in high school. I grew up in the SF Bay Area with Santana & later Journey, as two members of the Santana band went to form Journey. My very very favorite song Steve Perry sings is from Journey’s 1978 album ‘Infinity’ the song is “Winds of March”, I think the guitar and piano as well as vocal melody is really great.

You should really listen to some of his more well known songs such as Forever Yours Faithfully and Don't Stop Believing which is a classic that my daughter played at her wedding reception and even though it was recorded 10 years before she was born every young person at the reception was dancing to it and they were all singing along with the song and they knew every single word. Now that's a classic when kids 37 years after your song was recorded all know all the words to your song.

I saw them in 1982 with my parents as a young teenager. Growing up in Memphis, TN concerts and sports kept us all out of trouble. Loverboy supported Journey on this tour and the whole band wore the same sh*t. It kinda freaks me out because any show I find on this tour they're all wearing the same tee shirts, jeans, and for Neil I guess he had a pair of socks in his pants, lmfao. I love Neil as a guitarist and I definitely hold a special place in my heart for Steve Perry. The man was a freak in the best way possible.

I was 12 years old in 1978 when Infinity dropped, Journey's first album with Steve Perry. Was raised on opera, am sure I heard it in the womb, and still love it. First time I heard Steve's voice, I was hooked. Operatic quality tenor singing rock and roll. I don't believe he had operatic training, but the voice is amazing. I feel the same way about Heart's Ann Wilson... operatic quality soprano singing rock and roll. Thanks so much for your review! Really enjoyed it.

@AaliyahCapili This is my first view of your channel. I stopped @ 9:39 to comment, because I had to appreciate your acclaim for Steve's technique with vowels! You are spot on! His, (Journey), live, Don't Stop Believin' performance, in Houston, Texas, is a prominate demonstration of this technique. I think you will enjoy it! WOW. You are gifted in your observance. Not only in technique, but also, you have a clear wisdom for recognizing the lyrical depth of this very important message that this song is conveying. You know how to listen.(A skill that isn't very prevalent, these days).😢 You have an 🧐'old soul', young lady! Bravo!💃 Steve Perry is 'The Voice'!
