TEDxTokyo Jake Shimabukuro - 05/15/10 (English)

Few people would consider the ukulele a serious musical instrument. Until, that is, they hear Jake Shimabukuro play one. Jakes uncommon compositions and playing techniques defy labels and categories, and he lays down jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco and rock with equal virtuosity. Occasional tours with Jimmy Buffett & The Coral Reefer Band have broadened his experience and brought his talent and charming stage presence to crowds of up to fifty thousand people. Jake has also performed on NBCs The Late Show with Conan OBrien, The Today Show, and Last Call With Carson Daly, and been featured on NPRs Morning Edition and World Café, Public Radio Internationals The World, and others. In December 2009, he performed with Bette Midler for Queen Elizabeth during a special fundraising concert in Blackpool, England.

Everyone gets told at least a hundred times a week to go out and do this and do that because you only get one life so you have to make it memorable and amazing and imperfect. But the pressure and reality of that is not everyone is as free as most people feel you or they should be. People like Jake bring me back to the now and the simple joys of having simple passions and living and breathing the things you love to do most, there's no pressure in having and being the best of everything, but if one thing's the best to you then that's all you need :) he's amazing at what he does and i'm glad i came across this today, it was much a needed lift :)

43-year-old here, just learnt the uke for the last 2 weeks. In order to record a song I wrote (my guit is too "full" a sound to create that light shuffle feel). Inspired by your mastery and soulfulness of your uke playing, almost like you're dancing and love-making with that masterpiece of a machine (a Kamaka at that!). Someday, who knows, I may go beyond just strumming chords for the last two weeks of a new beauty of an instrument.
