My nieces are 14 and 13 years old, I treated them as my daughters since they were born, while their dad (my brother) was in and out of jail up until the day he died. Tyson said the reason Teddy pulled a gun on him is because Teddy wanted to leave Cus Da Motto and at the time Teddy was training Mike and wanted Mike to come with him, but Mike wanted to stay with Cus. It’s a fucked up situation all around. Mike was wrong first, let’s be clear. But pulling a gun on a 15 y.o. that you basically adopted isn’t right either. But if I was Teddy, I understand. Tyson at 15 was beating the shit out of grown men. It’s the only way he could get Tyson’s attention.

In hindsight Teddy was right and Cus was wrong. He probably slowed down Mikes process of self destruction but he was heading where he was heading and nobody was going to stop it after Teddy tried.

Unfortunately, at the stage that Mike Tyson was in as a teenager at that time, the threat that Teddy gave him was the only thing that he really would understand. Can’t blame Teddy for what he did under the circumstances and afterwards, years later, Mike Tyson went to Teddy Before a fight while in the audience, and apologize to him, shook his hand and gave him a hug, and Teddy accepted his apology. It takes a real man to put that pride aside and apologize and admit that they’re wrong. And Mike proved that he’s honorable, and that he’s mature, and that he understood as an adult that what he did when he was a teenager was wrong.

Every Teddy answer could be edited 80-90%. It’s like going to see your kid come up to bat at his little league game and having to watch every other kid just to get to yours

Teddy is one of the greatest boxing minds to walk the planet earth. People gotta remember, Tyson needed emotional stability as well as a stable home in the 80's. He was lashing out because he was frustrated about his circumstances and didn't know how to control his emotions. There was a better way to handle his situation then shooting him, that's for sure.

You do it when you hear him saying stuff like that, he didn't know no better. He hadn't been corrected in his actions before. You don't understand the mentality of people who come from the sort of places both these guys come from. Teddy was demonstrating to Tyson what's gonna happen in the real world if you violate somebody's daughter/ sister/ niece/ wife, only without the actual dying part. He was doing him a huge favor and protecting his own family at the same time. The police couldn't do anything because he hadn't committed any real crime to speak of, and even if he had, Tyson had already been to jail and was completely unimpressed with that form of punishment. He actually needed somebody like Teddy who comes from a similar environment and who was an older male figure to speak to Tyson in the only language he truly understood at that point. Anything less would be perceived as weakness by Tyson and would put everyone in that gym in danger. It was definitely the right move.

Tyson said the reason Teddy pulled a gun on him is because Teddy wanted to leave Cus Da Motto and at the time Teddy was training Mike and wanted Mike to come with him, but Mike wanted to stay with Cus. Kevin Rooney who was trained by Atlas also said Atlas is a liar about pulling a gun out on mike for trying to rape his niece or whatever he claimed.

If Teddy did that today, he would be convicted of assault with a deadly weapon. No matter how mad you are, you can't track someone down and pull a gun on them. You especially can't fire the gun near someones head after you pinned them down. Teddy needs to take his own advice. Always control yourself, inside and outside of the ring.

I think letting him back in the gym and shooting the gun were both things that kept Tyson from getting into worse trouble than he did.

He did what he had to to protect his niece, good job teddy! Years later Tyson allegedly did something to a women

I think Teddy has had resentment for Cus for a long time and he's getting more comfortable talking about how the man he respected more than anyone, the man who taught him his own values and ethics would end up stabbing him in the back for a championship. At the end of the day Cus cared more about winning than his own values and Teddy has to live with knowing that reality the rest of his life.

For people who think Teddy is wrong because Tyson is a minor I understand that thinking but Teddy does not condone his actions either but also that logic is similar to saying why would an police use force to put down a teen that’s shooting up a school.

Wanted him for his aggression but overlooked the trauma that made him that way...
