The only competition in this prize-range with same quality like the R-9012 and same analoge roots comes from Tecsun China as well. Its the R-909, R-912, R-911, R-9710 - the difference between all those radios are mainly in band coverage. I use the R-9012 in combination with the AN-7 antenna connector for my outdoor activities. The R-9012 has also a high reputation by ultralight-dxers on AM/SW-bands. In a rating the R-9012 won in 2009 in the category nulling-ability on AM against much more expensive radios.

Arrived yesterday , wow , its much better than my 1965 general electric 990 . How can that little radio be better than my big ,heavy old radio ? Duh ? I guess I need to move into the 21 st. Century . Thanks for your review .

This is a great receiver without a doubt. As you said, it is an awesome travel radio for those times when you do not want to carry more expensive radios around. It is a nice radio for around the house too. I am truly amazed at the sound quality. You cannot go wrong for $20! Joe

Once again I must post accolades of this great little radio!! I live in a mobile home which is aluminium siding and metal roof, and have Gila (Mylar) energy film on all my windows. Therefore radio and over-the-air TV signals are pretty much blocked and there is poor to no reception. Nonetheless, this little Tecsun R-9012 can pull in SW better than my Tecsun PL-660, Kaito KA600, Kaito KA550, and Grundig S450DLX!! It is an amazing little radio and had I known how good it was, I wouldn't have spent several hundred $$USD on my other radios!! Next time I have some 'disposable income' from my Social Security, I'd like to buy a GP-5/SSB and see how it compares to my beloved R-9012!!! I'll let you know!!

I have better radios but ordered this just to see how bad it really was. I was totally impressed when I got it. It picks up a lot of SW stations and I thought the AM and FM were pretty good. I expected the antenna to be lose and the turning knob to be wiggly, but they were both solid. I just get a kick out of a radio this small pulling in so many stations. This would be great for a camper or hiker that wanted to get the news anywhere in the world. The VOA broadcasts on the hour from WRMI (Radio Miami) and you probably can hear it from most anywhere on this side of the planet. If you are a Spanish speaking person, there are a lot of stations in Central and South America for you to listen to. For the money it is a fun little radio.

@@68VEALCHOP it depends on the level of tuning for portables you will get better tuning out of a digital, at least one that's 40+ dollars I still want a 9012

I bought 2.Im VERY impressed.Esp at night i get about 30 am stations very clear as with sw too.Its solid build and the tuning dial has very little slack.It locks great onto stations.Am very impressed with the sound.It is loud

4:00 Expanded band? In the Philippines, we have AM expanded band. Also in Australia (1602-1701 kHz). In some South American countries, expanded band goes up to 1620 kHz In Japan, both 1620 and 1629 kHz are widely used for Traffic Information radios service. This radio is going up to 1629 kHz.

The Tecsun R9012 is a decent cheap radio for MW and SW, but FM images are terrible especially in areas of FM RF high strength, such as southwestern Seoul, where FM signals are extremely busy (in such areas, DSP radios will be a great gadget). FM performance needs to be improved further. On SW/MW, audio tends to be slightly distorted when listening through earbuds if the signal is too strong. Still, The R9012 is a good entry-level SW radio especially for those who think even the Sony ICF-SW11 is quite expensive. But folks, forget about FM; you might have to regard its FM band just as an 'accessory' (due to the severe image issue) especially if you live in a high FM RF strength area. If you are to enter the world of shortwave listening and don't care about FM, the R9012 (as well as the R911) is a cheap solution for you.

I ordered it from amazon after seeing this review and am really impressed with this little cheap radio so far. I live in the west coast. With a 15 feet long wire, it could pick up chinese radio international, radio new zealand, radio havana, BBC from Ascension. The sound quality is good as well. It's almost as good as my ccrane skywave

@@chancerybunch4757 I clip the wire to the telescopic antenna and hang it over the window. You could search for the frequency in short-wave.info. I live in the west coast. RNZ/CRI and other Asian stations have pretty good receptions. I haven't logged BBC for long time.

Just received mine today and I'm really impressed. It's a fantastic deal for the price, and I know it's going to be one of my favourites to play around with casually. Fun little radio!

You need to get the general coverage radios for the CB band
