Tecnico Aristocrat 750 Radio Restoration - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Ғылым және технология

I was given this big ugly duckling of a radio because it looked hideous and headed for the dump. But after a clean up and some basic electronic repair it looks mightily impressive in my collection. It could have been a different story for this unwanted piece of radio history but who would be stupid enough to take it on?

Buy the way, I am in the TV industry, and your video work is second to none......a lot of effort is always put in......people dont realise how much goes into shooting and editing.......but I am glad you guys at the top level do.....this is more than just a restore video.....to me its documenting history and skill for those that come after we are long gone.

Hi Harb, thanks for your comment. You are right, there is a lot goes into making the videos and setting up cameras etc so thanks for noticing. I'm trying to get better results, my biggest issue at the moment is camera focusing I have to set the focus manually on each camera sometimes and they are still out of focus 😄

It is a pleasure to watch a real craftsman at work. I knew you were one of the few when I saw you check the tubes. Most technicians fail to do this unless they're is a problem, and they can't find any other cause for it. You should be proud. I am 77 years old and restoration was part of my life for 60 plus years of those. I too kept to detail, and only settled for the best. Cudo's to you, and keep up the great work.

I used to love to go to the TV repair store in the 60's with my dad. He had this shoe box full of vacuum tubes. Once a year, for some reason he went to buy tubes. First we would spend 15-20 minutes with the tube tester. A flip chart told you what settings to put the tester at in order to test the tube. Mostly it had 5 or 6 presets for filament voltage. Plug it in. The tube would glow and the the needle would tell you if the tube was bad. If it was bad, I have the honor and priveledge of cranking up the filament voltage, click by click. as it glowed and then burned out. Very satifying for a 12 year old.

It is kind of sad that today's TVs and radios are designed to be almost impossible to repair when they break. Some components are even packed in resin to make them this way.

I was the designated tube checker in the family. I'd pull all the tubes, ride my bike down to the 7-Eleven (convenience store) and check every one. They even had a stock of tubes in the bottom of the tester.

Hey David. Andrew from Melbourne here. A family friend of mine brought over an exact same Aristocrat for me to play with....I was 13 years old. Rod Stewarts Maggie May was big at that time. I turned 60 today....9th April 2021 and have loved tube amps ever since. I sold a lot of radios as a kid and I'm kicking myself now. That word hindsight. I had an external antenna tied to the chimneys and I often picked up AM signals from Sydney stations at night. Your work is second to none. I now own a Primaluna stereo tube amp running 8 EL34s and 6 12AU7s. It cost me 5 grand but is worth every cent. My Leak Stereo 20 Amplifier is waiting to be restored. The pre-amp has all the original knobs....a rarity today but I love it. I love your channel. This is how things should be done. Keep up the great work, Andrew.

Hi Andrew, I had a console radio that I picked up from a neighbour and put in my little work shed, (converted chicken shed) Maggie May was on all the time and when I hear it now I remember my shed and the smell of the furniture wax they used at the time. Your Primaluna amp would be amazing, that's some top gear. The Leak 20 is a nice unit too, from the late 50s I think. Thanks Andrew 😀

Loved the presentation. I recovered one from a dump trailer back in 1976, and enjoyed using it. It had short wave as well as a line input, but was lost in a house move. The most notable feature is the cylindrical mould of the bakelite surrounding the speaker, perhaps assisting 'purity' of the tone. Would have been a luxury item in its time...

Really nice work. I grew up with vacuum tubes. My first transistors didn't like my cathode warming ;-) Many years later I found a Halicrafters Sky Buddy for 2 dollars because it didn't work. When I inspected the guy, I found that two tubes with the same socket had been exchanged. Placing them in their right place made my radio work again. Some old leaking capacitors replaced and we were on air again. Thanks for your video that created some emotions just now.

It’s really nice to see a restoration which is well done. These usually are awful to watch but you truly know what you’re doing. I’ve been doing this since 1966 and I always try to find the most original way to do that. Unfortunately the electrolytics are problematic and you must use modern looking ones. You assembled then really neatly so they don’t interfere the overall view. I have made my daytime job in a TV station where I took care of studio cameras and video tape recorders. So this kind of hobby is relaxing.

Hi Tim, the radios were offered in different painted colours, it was extra to get a painted one. I'm sure it looked good painted when new 😃

You work harder and have done a better job on this radio because you work hard than most doing radio restores on KZread. The work you did to repair damage and corrosion and to refinish the complete radio is well worth noting. Your video is better filmed and then edited or whatever that is called; the production is correct my wife says. Your video is a good match for your restoration work. If you do that too you are a very talented fellow. Hats off for a job well done in this restoration and video production.

Daviid, I wouldn't have bothered to walk across the isle to look at that radio at a swap meet. It truly looked like it was ready for the junk pile. It doesn't even look like the same radio, beautiful restoration and sounds great :-D I was given a hifi to clean up for a blind man, he smoked like a chimney, it was covered with a thick coating of niccoteen, just touching it made the hand stick to it like glue (Horrible). After cleaning with warm water and washing up liquid, it was a really nice unit. The niccoteen seemed to protect it from scratches, and the bowl of poo-eee water was disgusting. I'm glad i never took up the habit of smoking.

Thanks zx8401ztv. I worked on commercial aircraft and in the early years when smoking was allowed the entire inside of the aircraft was covered in tar. It was good for finding pressurisation leaks though 😄

@@DavidTipton101 That day will come nearer as travel prices drops. Once you needed to sell the pearl white Rolls Royce to afford a plane ticket. Nowadays a sellout of your cassette tapes can do it. Who knows. By tomorrow a unique picture of your dinner on Facebook or a video on KZread describing the first Australian beer might be enough :D In any way, you'd be welcome :)
