Technics SU-3500 Amplifier Repair & Capacitor Problem

Ғылым және технология

This time we look at a lovely Technics SU-3500 integrated amplifier. This very pretty unit needed a good helping of new capacitors and time on the bench to get her working properly again. But what a beautifully made amplifier she is.

Hi, Great job you've done to keep this beautiful amplifier running for many more years 👏 Did you used audio grade caps?

Strange. I recapped mine and all the caps were in good condition. You can get a good LF boost with replacing the coupling caps on the input to the power amp. I love mine, its a keeper. The main reservoir caps had bulged however and was drawing a few amps at 50V. Take a look at my vids!

Hi Simon, thanks for commenting! I know what you mean, but not really strange in my experience. Nothing really surprises me with electronics anymore, I've seen bad batches of caps like this, where every one of a certain value was dead. The classic blue Philips axial 22uF caps used in Philips CD transports spring to mind, I don't think I've ever worked on one of those where those caps measured good. Anyway, glad yours was OK, my customer is very happy so all good in the end!

Technics make some good amps. Long time user of the su-780 recently upgraded to the su-980 which despite its cheaper 90s heatsink and design.. has remote control. Driving a vx800 makes for some fun listening. Now chasing an su-2500 for a neighbour who wants to recover her 2500 system I held for her.. This 3500 looks great, but I'm trying to get the olden day charm of the VU Meyers which bestowed the 2500 with a few more lights at the expense of 5 amps rms less than the 3500. Seen some cap kits for my vx800 which has some issues with slow changeover to the "direct" connection bypassing preamp. But I'm not hearing anything wrong with it so why recap? The board was super dusty and that's what kills electronics a lot.. but despite the 60-90 second delay in swap over from preampw to direct to Poweramp voltage control amp circuit.. there's no problems. Anyway just saw this 3500 and apart from lack of 70s display, it's a nice looking amp

I have the same amplifier, but a different problem. When I change the volume, you can hear a crackling sound. Also, it's normally set to Aux2, however sometimes the sound suddenly ceases on one of the speakers, but it comes back if I turn the switch a little towards Aux1. Sometimes I have to play around with it multiple times during a movie. Any ideas what's causing such issues?

Sounds like it needs a proper clean and service, this is common on anything of this age. Parts degrade, capacitors fail and leak, controls need attention, circuits need adjustment etc.

I have a Technics se a808 amp. And its turning on, but the klick sound is not coming anymore. So i found out that it should be one or both of the STK1050's. What do you think? I really dont know how to replace them... And even if i do how to get the original STK1050's, only fakes are left :(

Hi, it could be the STK modules as these often fail. It could also be another fault. I'd really need the unit here for careful testing. I have stocks of some STK modules and some genuine parts are still available, but only certain types. I'm guessing you are not anywhere near Perth..?!

@@LiquidAudio well, mine is a mackie m1400i, but the green "cold" LED turns on, and the green "sig" LED turns on if I have sounds feeding into either of the channels. Also, when I shut off the unit the two LEDs at the top remain on for a few seconds. I imagine that's proper. It's just that there's no output. All the fuses are good... but the fan bearings seized... thanks for getting back to me :)

@@JustinCrediblename Ah, I see. It's difficult to diagnose faults like this without the equipment in front of me, the nature of electronics, unfortunately. It could be down to many things. It sounds to me like some work will be needed on that module though.

@@LiquidAudio heheh. that's for sure. I'm hoping that the ribbon cable failed after the fan failed. The ribbon cable, originally grey, turned brown. It'll definitely need looking at. I bought an in-circuit capacitor tester. Little by little, this handyman who normally deals with simpler tools, might become able to work on these complicated electronic gizmos. But ugh, it succcks. anyway, thanks for getting back to me. I'll update you if I end up succeeding in fixing it. I'll do this for the sake of your information, as a return favor.

Hi Ken, no not at all, these measured just fine and in a customer repair like this, they are a) beyond the scope of the job and b) perfect anyway, so no point in replacing them. Every job is a little different, from servicing, to repairs and then complete restorations sometimes!

  • @LiquidAudio

@Ubiratan Pacheco Not quite that simple. If this was my amp and money was no issue then yes, you would replace them. The caps that are OK now will not soon fail after working well for 40 years though, this is a common misunderstanding. This repair was for local fi-fi store and in cases like this, minimising costs is usually critically important. This job was only viable because I was able to minimise costs in terms of time and parts. Customer and budgetary factors come into play much more than people realise when running a repair business.
