Technics SL-1210MK2 vs SL-1210MK7 - Which turntable is the best & what's the difference?

Музыка

When it comes to turntables, one name has always stood out above the rest, so when Technics announced the brand new SL-1210MK7 earlier this year, everyone wondered the same thing - How does it compare to the legendary, 'Club Standard' SL-1210MK2!?
Ratzi's joined by turntable nerd & scratch extraordinaire Jimi Needles in The Ratcave to compare the two decks, putting the MK7 through it's paces with some hard cuts and scratching!

What was also proven here was the 30+ year old MK2 can easily keep up and match the performance of a fresh out the box MK7. The hinge holders on the MK2 are also removable with 2 small screws to achieve the flush look to the mixer!

Yep. When these MK7s came out I assumed they’d essentially end the used MK2 market. But, no, in many ways MK2s are still the ones to own. I used to snap up any beat up examples I saw going cheap and strip them down, re-grease and oil them, replace any worn parts and they’d be as good as factory fresh again. Don’t make much money going this-just love these decks so much it’s fun to give them a whole new life, especially with the rise of DVS giving them a whole new purpose

I don't think back in the 70s Technics would realize they have created the most legendary iconic turntable. For the home to the clubs basic over engineered. This has been the footprint for all other decks cdj's midi controllers for years after.

Exactly. It was a "happy accident" which made them a lot of money. However, because it was a near perfect product, there was no need for people to buy anything new from them providing their originals still work. So business wise, it wasn't the best model but for the consumer it was great.

Thanks for the video. The weight difference is 70's tech vs 2019 tech. It says on the Technics product page that there is a mixture of composite materials in the deck that actually makes it more vibration proof even though its lighter. The pop-up light. I wonder if its on a rubber base so that it does not snap off if knocked hard ? Hence the wobble ? The light on the 1210 Mk2 always looked a bit out of place to me, I prefer the new one.

The weight difference is the way how the driver is build and it has a lighter power supply. I personally use them in a case so that wouldn't be a problem. FYI - The target pops up and pushes down on the MK7. I think its a cool feature and definitely not a monstrosity if you push it down. The only thing I wish it had was a green light at centre / middle pitch. The MK2s pitch was green when it was at a neutral pitch. The build quality on the MK7 is beautiful and the all black tone arm and shell looks so sexy. Great video just wanted to note the target light pushes in. Happy mixing!

As a Technics (independent) service engineer ( www.technics-service.co.uk ) my advice would be to stick with the original Mk2's if you have them. The only time you would want to consider the Mk7 is if you want the cheapest 'brand new' turntable. The analogue VCO pitch on the Mk2 is far more precise (when calibrated) than the digitally controlled pitch of the Mk7. I have had quite a few people sending me queries with the issues they have had with the mk7, notably pitch lock drift (even when following the reset procedure). Another issue with the Mk7 is the fact they use lead-free solder on the construction of the PCBs. The composite used is not upto the same standard, and would start to deteriorate from about 5 years from manufacture. Unlike other Technics products, the Mk7 is not a high quality Japanese product so bear this in mind - and its important that anyone doing a review must mention this. Original models have increased considerably in value as they are very sought after. Again this is partly due to the more accurate analogue VCO pitch. Digital pitch controls suffer aliasing and non linearity errors (like a micro judder) which is what some people have noticed on the Mk5G. There are other issues with the Mk7 so once again my advice is stick with your originals.

Part of the success of the technics turntables, was the fact they made them TOO GOOD. So good, they never broke, and only needed minor service. Unfortunatey. In 2010. These guys haven't read the manual. Under the platter are dipswitches where you can set different functions. (easily accessible through the two holes in the platter, or by removing the entire platter) Functions like: The startup torque (4 different torque settings) and brake (4 different brake settings), the LED color. (the classic red or blue for all LED's except the pop-up tracklight) But also the function of the combined 33-45 buttons. You have two choises of what those buttons pressed together will do: Eighter raise the rpm to 78, or function as a reverse button.

Although I’m happy Technics brought back the 1200 range. I still prefer the original MK2 model’s cause I’m just to use to the feel of those and also I prefer the build quality of the MK2. I just prefer the nice silver buttons and the chrome tone arm, silver strobe light housing and counter weight with the back rubber grip. Even the little silver ring at the top of the feets on the MK2. The thing I’m not big is the giant cut out that is on the back side panel of the unit. Looks ugly and similar to the super OEM units. If the detachable cable was designed like the MK4 (Japan only) design. Then it would have been perfect. I just like the filled out back side of the original MK series. I would think that has to be part of the reason the newer MK series are more lighter. Also I prefer the analog QUARTZ locked pitch system than the newer digital system and of course the all metal silver 45 adapter and I’m glad they touched on the difference on the pop up target light which is clearly a more superior build quality on the older MK series. Although I do prefer the newer ultra white LED light they use now. In conclusion I would say the MK7 is more closely comparable to the MK3D model with the pushed in power switch and spare head shell holder and the pitch reset button and notch less “0” point on the pitch slider.

I’ve yet to get my hands on a MK7, but from what I can see online, they look cheaper, they’re lighter, they may have a resonance problem, the pop-up light isn’t smoothly damped, it pops up fast and cheap-like, the tonearm section has some ‘wiggle’ to it from the base, etc. I bought my pair of 1200MK2s in 2005 and I’m never gonna get rid of them. They’re still like new..despite me dragging them to all sorts of parties when I was younger 😂. They’re safe in flight cases at home now. Frankie Bones even played on them awhile back and tagged both of them up 😆😆. You can’t beat the feel of proper MK2/MK5 analog pitch. I’ll have to reserve final judgement on the MK7s until I get some mixing and blending time on them.

They do sound better than original mk2 but not by a huge margin. The feet are more wobbly, but that’s for feedback, and there not as bad as some have said! But !! I was disappointed with the wobble.! They don’t stop like the original mk2!!! There slower, that’s not a problem mixing, I know but when I’m flicking through records, I want it to stop dead !!! Like the original. This new expensive new motor design I think was because of time code users (hifi/DJ) they were aiming for perfection! To eliminate “clogging” which no one has heard or accounted?? Maybe time code purists did? Overall they are beautiful definitely not worth the price!! I’m 44 and know my shit, anyone who wants a Technics look for second hand mk3!!!! Aside from some very light cosmetic scratches on the top side of the plinth, my MKII is in pristine condition. Let's not look over the fact that servicing a MKII is quite easy to do or have done. I just serviced my spindle, removed the whole thing, tore down the thrust plate, cleaned and oiled it and put it back in. I'll be good for a another 2000 hours. @@whistleblower7078 I've had Mk2's M3d's and Mk5's, and none of them ever went to +16 maxed out. About + or - 13% is the most you will get/ Saying that, not a single digital pitch has ever come close to the accuracy of a standard analogue Technics pitch, and when you widen the pitch range they lose accuracy because they are designed for 8%.
