Very informative and nice repair, keep these audio items alive

Long press on up or down button is auto scan, short press is manual scan... (mine has .05 steps with FM scanning! I see this one has .2 steps... ) I got mine for sale at this moment. I already replaced the STK module and cleaned all the potentiometers. This was my first receiver I bought from my savings in the early 80’s! Together with a Technics RSM255X tapedeck and a Technics SL-P2 cd player.

Oh, and of course...The entertainment value? Priceless! Thanks again...

No expert here...but just had a fence replaced, didn't pick the cheapest quote, didn't pick the most expensive either. Picked the one in the middle saved a grand and, just like baby bear, found a builder that was just right! (Oh and read reviews.) Did the same with the STK replacement. Still, I guess we got lucky, right Dave? And as for cost vs reward, this unit/stack has also some sentimental value. BTW the part was 37.50 usd. So, not bad. All in all, a good save!

When these parts were readily available they were in the 40-50 range some closer to 100 such as the ones used for convergence circuits for projection TV.

Nice repair👍. You talk about your tip has seen better days. I use a t12 home made station wich works really well for me.

Yes looks nice. Personally I like the silver components as opposed to black, but then look at my cars. Both silver. Black is also good though. My Harley is black.

@@12voltvids hello pls i really need your help. So i got this panasonic vcr model nvj11am. It's in pristine condition. Cassette goes in and plays without any hassle. BUT there is no signal on my tv when i connect it both by AV or RF! Not even a blue screen to show me that the vcr is in fact connected to the tv. Went to channel 1,2,3 up to 100 ..nothing! (It's an old crt sony trinitron tv btw). What do i do? Should'nt AV logo light up on the vcr when i connect it by AV? I can see the logo is there on the vcr screen but does not light up. Same for RF shouldn't VTR logo light up? But nothing lights up. I can only see the clock and the count when the tape plays. Pls help!

@@12voltvids yes no prob with the tv. Let me point out another thing, when i insert a tape into the vcr, the head starts spinning continuously without me pressing the play button. Is that a problem?

@@woodywolf0309 Vcrs that laces the tape up when the tape was inserted do turn on the drum motor. If you leave it sit in stop mode it should turn off within 5 minutes.

Okay, thanks. I'll follow the glue removal procedure you mentioned and touch up IC solder on my seldom used SA310. I wonder what other nasty component (or glue) is getting ready to fry mine or that NEW IC on yours with improper bias. That amp output design is toal cray cray; it first preheats like the kitchen oven complete with front panel indicator lights! Low distortion is it's claim to fame Of course, I own the service manual too, but probably can't find it if it's ever needed. lol

I have an old Technics receiver that is a little earlier vintage than this one. It still has the original STK in it (knock on wood). I believe I bought it in 1990, so it just had its' 30th birthday this year. I still use it everyday as a computer speaker amp.

Smashing repair :-D Lucky to get a good module, but it's fixed and a nice stacking unit is saved :-D. Years ago i was given a music center with a cremated sanken module (unobtainium). it was not worth fixing but i found a dead t.v that had a stereo module, i used a junior hacksaw around the amplifier section and dropped the pcb/module into the music center. It was naughty but sometimes a bodge is the only way, that's my excuse lol.

This module looked to be a nos module, no signs that it had been pulled but some of the sellers do a real good job of cleaning them up.

That computer drive Ic looks interesting! I wonder if there's a datasheet available for it? Do you think that it's a custom Technics IC or a micro controller? One of my Technics is computer controlled New Class AA but I haven't had a look inside yet, my other Technics amplifier is older and uses the STK modules and one of them is blown but the amplifier still function's with only one channel! I guess that it's only using 300W out of the 600W power consumption LoL. Can't use it during summer, the air conditioner can't keep up and that's with only one channel LoL can't imagine both! I'm not using it at the moment, I'm putting up with the Sony ES which is using class D amplifiers and it's terrible for music, movies on the other hand sound amazing! Hmmm now I'm thinking about my other Amplifiers, yeah I have way too many. A couple of pioneer units, three different technics, two Sony ES, one magazine kit amplifier which is one of the best sounding amplifiers that I have ever heard, another one that was being built in someone's garage and being sold commercially during the 70's, two PA Amplifiers, fostex powered monitor's but that's another category that I shouldn't get into here, there's more amplifiers but these are the ones that I can think of the top of my head! I'm almost like a used Hifi shop except I'm not selling things. well not yet anyway, later on in life during my retirement, if my kids don't get attached to anything it'll all go except my favourite that will take care of me till my last breath!

It's an in house chip. It controls the bias, what they call synchro bias.

Thank you very much for all your videos and instruction. Truly excellent work and entertainment. Quick question, I have a Sansui 350A that’s very pretty but the tuning dial is off. To listen to 96 FM I have to tune the dial to around 98FM. Have you done any past videos showing how to adjust or calibrate the tuning dial indicator? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The 310 stands for 310W which the 3A fuse would make peak consumption not over 360W. I remember when I worked at Panasonic in the early 80's they had a SA1000 beast in the lab. I was just a temp employee replacing defective switches in a "lot" of car stereos. I don't know if it would be feasible due to your location and associated shipping costs from Northern California U.S. but I have a Marantz SR8002 that weighs about 30lbs, 7 channels 125W ea.@ .05THD. The unit experienced a power surge and now goes into protect mode. When the reset procedure is performed, it comes on for about 3 seconds. During that time you can adjust the volume, change input and it seems all the features work but at the end of the 3 seconds it goes back into protect mode. This is a 2009 year model and cost $2000 when new, quite the beautiful beast. The question is...Can you fix it? The problem is likely on the power PCB, I have the service manual. It would come down to if shipping and repair cost is viable. [P.S. I avoid all the modern stuff like the plague. First of all shipping to Canada would be over 100 each way and those receivers are very ugly. I stick to vintage 2 channel equipment.

I have one of these. Everything works fine, but the numeric am/fm LCD display is not lit up. The analog tuning needle works fine. Any idea on how to fix/check the LCD display?

What do you use for test speakers? I have GE branded Technics receiver that looks very similar, but has LED power bars in place of the tuner meter. Technics was the OEM for GE's audio line in the 80s. A retired GE tech who used to repair this stuff gave me some older audio gear he had laying around. The GE speakers he gave me have the Technics flat woofers in them. A really nifty designed, but a pain to refoam. LOL

What is that red led light that goes on and off while tuning in stations,,,is it the fm stereo indicator light or something else?

Some things have sentimental value for the owners. The owner found the part, and I charge a minimal charge to work on these as I make the bulk from the advertising that shows on the videos. For a shop to do this it wouldn't be worth it.

Can you explain the bench power supply and the 100w bulb to test for shorting? I actually have one of these coming in Friday that I'm going to try to fix and the owner said it was shorting out -- sounds just like what you diagnosed. I'm trying to learn electronic repair and am trying to fix something inexpensive. Great video - thanks!

The incandescent light bulb is wired in series with the power cord so all the current had to go through the light bulb. Under normal operation the unit will draw well under 1 amp and will receive a little reduced voltage. However if something is shorted it will draw full power and the light bulb will light up bright and limit the current to about 1 amp saving other components and the fuse from burning up.

@@brettkaufman4231 My isolation transformer is under the bench. You don't see it. The red device you see is a variac to adjust voltage. It does not isolate. It is nothing more than a variable auto transformer. The variac is plugged into the isolation transformer. My isolation transformer is 5 amps and the variac fused at 3 so big things like microwaves are not plugged into it.

I'm learning on an SA-130 right now -- It has a blown one with melted lead #22, a bad R602 and something else fried on the Vamp I'm looking into. Also looking at the diagram to see why this may have failed (elsewhere). Thanks. Brett

There is a station still playing the Glitter Band!!!!! Was it worth the price of the IC? Nice bit of kit, but the IC would not have been cheap and I don't think I would have bothered. Of course, If I fixed it for myself that is another mater, but even then I might have hesitated doing it. I like the dual dials, but is it a driven dial or is it just an electronic one? Anyway, I am still watching your videos. I like the fault finding when it is shortened down a little, but not so much I am left wondering how you came to a conclusion that this component is at fault. Fine for some who do not want to watch fault finding, but I do to a point, but not 2 hours of it, so it must be hard to get a compromise so both people like me and the others who just want to see the fault and you saying "This is faulty" without any reasoning as to why it is faulty and how you came to that conclusion! Anyway, keep up the good videos. I might be well behind at times trying to watch, but I will get there in the end.

@@RalphRacc00N Yeah, I saw it. Can't remember him saying he would not buy Ebay parts, but I don't blame him, there is a lot of Chinese copies of components that are crap. Not all are, but how do you know the fake ones until you get them, try them in and find they either don't work or are very poor in performance. Also if you order some components that have not been made for years from Ebay they come with shiny legs on them, now if they stopped making these 20 to 30 years ago, how come they are still all shiny, they should be dull, grey and showing signs of corrosion on the legs. So if you order off Ebay at half price, you may well be ordering from another supplier next week at twice the price, so you will have already spent half the cost and lost that just because you wanted to save a few bucks! It will sometimes cost you a lot more in the long run.

I didn't buy the parts. I handed the bad part to the customer and let him order the part. Had it been a bad part he would have had to deal with the seller as I just don't need the agrivation and hassle of dealing with shipping parts back and forth. Dealt with that on that yamaha mixer several years ago. 2 bad ic in a row. I lost money on that one because PayPal messed up (they had a hold on the funds in the account and rather then put the charges on my credit card they took it from the bank account on file. Problem was the bank account they had on file had no money on it as it was opened specifically for getting money out of paypal and as a result of paypal attempting to withdraw funds caused a 45.00 over draft charge.) Lots of pulled parts on ebay and amazon market. Looks like this time we got lucky. Looks original however counterfeit parts look identical and it is really hard to tell the difference. The counterfeit parts however generally don't last that long.

I could easily sit through three to four hours no problem when I comes to repair work! If something was talking to long, you can always skip through but if you just happened to come across this same receiver and you purchased it only to realise that something was missing inside, a long video that thoroughly went over everything will be a god send! You can't simply skip to the part that you need because it's not there! I understand that everyone is different, some people watch to learn while others are entertained! I personally find it relaxing. Others watch porn LoL. This is my electroporn. Literally watching someone else do it 😂

That's what a fuse is. A piece of wire in a glass tube.

Close to 20 years ago I replaced the convergence ic's on my Toshiba projection tv. I got them off of E bay. They must have been brand new because they lasted just as long if not longer than the originals. They are blown again now, and I just can't bring myself to throwing it out. The cheesy spring loaded speaker hook ups on my stereos are the only things I don't like about them. I've seen these $200,000 amplifiers where they have binding posts like you see on industrial arc welders.
