Technics Debuts NEW SL-1200GR2 Turntable | Michael Fremer Reports...

Ойын-сауық

From Fremer: At a hotel adjacent to company headquarters, Bill Voss, Technics' American Business Development Manager, introduced the new $2199 "next gen" SL1200GR turntable featuring a revolutionary new Delta Sigma drive control technique said to produce smooth, accurate rotational stability and a new power supply similar to the one used in the top of the line SL-1000R, said to produce an exceptionally low noise floor. .
Based on the informal listening session featuring a complete Technics system it was clear that the new 'table is noticeably quiet and fitted with an Ortofon 2M Black, produced a smooth, pleasing, "musical" sound.
The system consisted of the SU-G700M2-S Digital Integrated Amplifier+ buiilt-in MM/MC phono preamp, SBG90M2 Floorstanding Loudspeakers. Despite no room treatment in the hotel room the sound was rich, warm, and pleasingly detailed reproducing a 1980 Technics-produced record featuring the LA4.

Still own and use the OG SL-1200 MK2. It is indestructible and still sounds great. Was fortunate to purchase a Jelco tonearm before they discontinued manufacturing. Technics + Jelco + Nagaoka = 👌

@jimmyhatz awesome! Super curious of the difference between the 200 and 500. I know that the 500 has the micro line stylus, but wondering if it can still be as meaty and dynamic as the 200 while being even more resolving. Would love to hear what you think after you get it set up!

I have a very early MK2 from August of 1979. Sounds incredible and works perfectly. The original MK2 tonearm is much better than people realize, provided the bearings are in good condition.

Incidentally, the people obsessing about milling imperfections on the modern Technics decks should check out some of the demo videos of old 1200MkIIs sometime, you know, the turntables Technics made when I was in high school, when "everything was better and Technics exercised perfect quality control." 😆

I'd love to see Technics add XLR connectors to the 1200gr! The other thing I would like to see is pricing without a tonearm. I heard a turntable with an originlive encounter tonearm and since then I want a turntable with that tonearm, not only because it sounds fantastic but also because it looks gorgeous.

Using something like a Denon 103 can be a struggle to get enough head shell mass (or effective tonearm mass I guess) for proper control of the low compliance cartridge. In my experience, I added head shell weight and the supplied extra counter weight to balance or the sound suffered. I bought the DL-103 not realizing how low compliance it is and it sounded awful (noticeably worse than a N97xE or a AT-VM95ML) until I educated myself and applied the tuning above (yes, with appropriate MC Pre). Thought it was the stylus differences but no, for me it was setup. Also, it's worth mentioning something most reviewers tend to miss - the supplied head shell has a set screw which allows for azimuth adjustment. Mine was noticeably off out of the box and the micro-line cartridge sounded very unbalanced until I dialed in the azimuth. I'm not at all a golden ear but I do actually hear the differences with proper set up given all the cartridge and geometry fussing about for setup. I've since bought a bunch of head shells to experiment and realized after the fact most of the cheap ones do not allow azimuth changes - I encourage buying ones which do allow for azimuth adjustment. Absolutely love the TT. Mine did not come with a 3mm spacer as mentioned by other reviewers, so again - the 103 needs one. The tonearm on the black model is silver not black as reported here - doesn't bother me - maybe just a variation on later shipping models since I bought mine roughly Feb 2024. Copied most of this from other videos since I see this info often missing.

I’ve been interested in this exact idea. If a G2 came out it would likely have this delta sigma technology from the GR2 and therefore an external power supply would not be an upgrade. And maybe some other tweaks.

I really hope Technics creates something for the audiophiles who have no use for DJ options (and without spending 20k). We should have an option at $2500 that gives us the premium parts without the lights/action/furniture…..just saying. PLEASE TECHNICS ❤

@@roymoxley2587 They discontinued it well after Napster was at its peak but there was still a lot online illegal music sharing at the time. The CD was reigning supreme and CD writers for PCs were abundant - which killed the tape decks. Back then SL1200mkIIs were selling for 350 GBP - I don't know whether this was because Richer Sounds in UK had bought a large portion of the remaining stock or just made a huge order but people rushed to grab them and they soon vanished. In my estimation, that was a really good price and given the demand it could have supported production, even if at a slight loss, for a good 10 years' more or so given that the SL1200 was practically selling itself.

The strobe is there for speed matching when adjusting the speed with the DJ adjustable control. If you don't use the DJ controls the strobe is rock steady. Speed control for direct drive turntables was figured out in the 70s as was the largely fake "cogging" problem.
