Technics 1506 Brake Adjustment and Testing

Фильм және анимация

I'm no professional and i'm sure some tape apes will question my techniques but this video is the testing and brake adjustment on my Technics 1506 Reel to Reel. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas. i'm open to criticism, as long as it's not rude trolling.

    It's great you had a go fixing this old tape machine - Tape Apes will chatter but you are a 'class man' for doing a good job on these difficult machines. Well done sir... 🤓

    Just something to note in case you haven't discovered it yet. Someone has modified the headblock on your machine which essentially converts it to an RS-1500. It looks as if someone replaced the heads on this and converted it to 2 track record/play Your 1506 originally came with a RP-2422 (4 track play and record, 2 track play) Since the heads were swapped, it is now essentially the same as an RP-2224 (2 track play and record, 4 track play), even though the labels on the front of the headblock were not changed. I have both an RS-1506 and an RS-1500 and confirmed on my machines.

    I have always admired these tape recorders since I first saw them in an exhibition in the 1980s. However, since I became familiar with the design of the brakes, I have been rather disappointed. Why did Technics use such tiny brake shoes? This means that early wear is inevitable. Akai and Revox used band brakes with about ten times the friction surface and practically no wear.

    You need to replace the pad on the reel that’s “coasting”. So, if you winding right to left, the left reel is pulling while the right is coasting, the right reel would be the one you’d need to replace because it should be braking to prevent over turning when the left reel stops pulling.

    @@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY What causes the supply reel on a technics rs 1500 to keep running after after all the tape has been rewound? Is it a brake switch not working? Or is it the brakes not holding? Great video! Very informative. Thank you

    @@SDsailor7 If it stops when you stop it or plays normally, I wouldn’t think it was the brake pads. Not being an actual tech but I would suspect a switch because if it continues to run after all tape has been through, it could be a tension switch. Something is failing to tell the motor to stop. If the motor stops but the reel continues to free wheel, I’d suspect the brake switch. But, like I said, I’m not a tech and they are hard to find now a days.

    @@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY I sprayed both microswitches with deoxit and worked them a bunch of times. But yes it could be that one of the switches might be going bad. So far it only does it on rewind. Thank you for replying back.

    @@1SpudNuts1BigNasty-DIY I found out that when the pitch control knob/switch is in the off position the tension arms move up and down constantly and it distorts the sound/music but if i have the pitch control knob in the on position no more problems, the tension arms are stable and the music plays fine. Is the pitch control supposed to be off or on in normal operation? The owners manual does not say anything about it.

    That's the tape! Not your Brakes! When the deck operates, the brakes are completely disengaged and it uses the supply side motor to provide reverse tension. The tape has SSS (Sticky Shed Syndrome). The tape is shedding enough sticky material to bind up the transport. Keep using that same reel, and you'll gunk up your tape path possibly put enough stress on the motors to fry them. Get the service manual. The location of the squeal is irrelevant. The tape itself will squeal and can sound like it's coming from anywhere along the tape path. And it can also cause the tape top ride over the guides. DON'T ADJUST YOU GUIDES!!!

    Great video, glad to see you want to save those old machines, they were classics made with quality. But there is nothing wrong with the brake, the tape is shedding and sticky. You have to heat the tape in the oven.

  • @eddisc4205

    @eddisc4205

    DO NOT simply "heat" in an oven !!! You'll screw it up !! Use a food dehydrator. RESEARCH !!! It's called SSS for sticky shed syndrome. If not corrected, you'll burn out your VERY EXPENSIVE MOTORS !!!

Right now i have it open and i am in the process of flipping the rubber valves on the bellows i did not know it was going to be a pain in the butt! Specially the left side one.
