Garbage truck mechanic here: make sure you get the filter loose first. Sometimes there a fight to get off. Also make sure you have one to replace. One time a guy punched a hole in one and we were out of stock on that filter and he didn’t check prior. We had to make a special run to Mack that day just for a filter.

I used to do the hole punch in the oil filter too but now I’ve learned an even easier and less messy method. Simply use a plastic disposable ice coffee cup. Starbucks venti or Dunkin medium size works perfectly. Roughly 22 oz. After loosening the filter, cup the whole filter and spin it off with cup in your hand. The oil will begin to pour into the cup. Not anywhere else. Then gently let the old filter slide into the same cup. Catch remaining dripping oil in the plastic cup and be ready with a new filter once it has slowed to a slow enough drip. Replace filter and done. I got all my friends doing this and they too agree that this has been the best method yet.

I do wanna add that if your filter is horizontally mounted AND you have vertical access to it from the bottom you can punch it from the side and still drain the oil in the same manner as in this video. You will also have the added benefit of being able to use the punch to getting a tight fitting filter unscrewed off. We did this in this exact manner at Norfolk southern railroad when I worked as an electrician there. Well the mechanics did it I just seen it done many many times usually with a heavy duty screwdriver but punch will work just the same

If oil doesn’t come out smoothly after a while, tap another hole and then air can get in and smooth flow can resume. @@samkostka126so... If you're car, like mine, has an angled oil filter and it drips all over you each time you change it. Lift the car from the side the oil filter is facing. Not only will it get you better clearance but it should also increase the angle the oil filter tilts allowing for the oil to drain down instead of puddling horizontally and making a mess every time you try to change it. Even a slight incline will do the trick and if you're more comfortable changing your oil filter the same way as always no problem, you can just step out from underneath leave the oil pan still dripping, bring the car down, jack it up from the side for a minute to get that oil on the filter to drain and then jack it up again the way you always have and you should be able to get it out with out the mess.

@@jmt052393 bingo. im an auto tech for a living unfortunately as it doesnt pay enough and I'm tired of wrenching. but punching holes in filters is a bad idea generally speaking. if the filter looses is structural integrity it makes it more difficult to remove. the filter will crush and become more impossible. always a good idea to crack it free near the base of the filter closest to the housing.

It's gotta come off one way or the other at that point. So it doesn't really matter I don't think to be honest. Besides, if you do end up tearing it up to get it off this way it's already empty and you aren't having to take an oil bath. 😁
