Tech Talk: Inside Joshua Eustis / Telefon Tel Aviv's Sound Lab (Electronic Beats TV)
Музыка
Telefon Tel Aviv has one of the most intense sound palettes in electronic music - atmospheric, emotive, swirling and intricate, all at the same time. It’s striking, then, that surviving member Joshua Eustis, who also records as Sons Of Magdalene and Second Woman, has such a deceptively simple set-up - working from Ableton Live with Max MSP as a further tool. It’s a sound lab built to be mobile. For the latest episode of Tech Talk, Telekom Electronic Beats TV spoke to him about his sonic imagination and the equipment and techniques he uses to realise it.

their glitch percussion compose and editing was genius ..i heard a lot of electronic music but never something that's defines a complete gender and personality as t.t.a ..way ahead of their time.

agreed.
I hope this guy realizes what a legend he is and more than that I hope the world wakes up and realizes what an undeniable genius this guy is and how much he contributed to IDM and electronic music in general.

Max for Live/MSP is one of if not the most powerful programming environment for creating music
I wish this video was about 9 hours longer. Just a small request.
All the videos of insane studios...and then this. Thank you showing what we all know. A well put together bedroom studio is all you need. Not $200k of outboard compressors and EQs, not 14 keyboards, not 6 sets of monitors. If this simple setup is enough for a legend like Telefon Tel Aviv, it’s enough for anyone.

Monome Grid and Roli Seaboard aren't exactly cheap though. It's just a minimalist approach, not necessarily a cheap one. Makes sense because a big part of his approach to music is through programming, also he could augment tf out of both OSC and MPE data in Max to get a wide variety of compositional options

I think you missed the entire point. It's not about how many out board gear you have, or none... the point is just to have the setup that corresponds to your way of making music. It can be out boards for some, and all in the computer for others, or a bit of both, etc... saying what you say is just making you as wrong as people saying you need gears. You have to understand that some artists couldn't be as great as they are if instead of having out board stuffs they used in board stuffs, and vice-versa. Everything is just a question of the relation between the person and its way of approaching, and then creating, music.
The hidden gem in electronic music. Glad to see that there is an interview
I have never felt I related more to how an artist made music than Joshua Eustis. Absolute inspiration. His live show was an experience. Right before covid lockdown in Seattle. Not many people came ao I got to stand up front all alone. Completely mind blowing.
I thought this project was finished after Charlie Coopers passing Nice to see this guy , farenheit fair enough was a game changer

@@15erDotA you should also check his other projects. Sons of Magdalene and The Black Queen. Love all his projects except for the Black Light Burns one with Wes Borland.
His music is imprinted in my DNA how much I listened it.
Thanks you so much for featuring Telefon Tel Aviv. His music is following me for nearly 20 years now, the music feels so familiar to me! Immolate Yourself is in one of the best Albums i´ve ever heard. Funny to see that beside all the nerdy Max for Live Stuff there is a little 0Coast standing on the desk;) Thank you for the Music Joshua;)
I like this guy, he's giving you enough to figure out you have to personalize your work and these are the tools he uses and some idea of how, if you even get what hes saying, no million dollar equipment required, everything truly special comes from the artist and his unique approach to putting it together.

He's *definitely* got more equipment. He was being humble about what he works with. Nice gear can get very boring, and inevitably you will want to make your own tools. (Makes sense.. TTA have been pushing DAWs, plugins, and hardware to their limits since the start)
Not only ridiculously talented and hardworking, but also humble and personable.
The Sons of Magdalene releases changed my life; Thank you for this!
Met Josh in an airport when he was touring with NIN. Super nice guy.

I met him when he came to Sydney with The Black Queen. I agree he's super nice and polite and thankful and down to earth. I was fangirling and he made me feel so comfortable.
UUh. I love his workflow and his love for MAX! Great vid!
this is music, pure love.
Immolate Yourself is a masterwork. Excited to see if the time with NIN makes the TTV sound even darker, going forward. RIP Charlie.
That lunchbox is enough to transform any home studio into something ridiculously serious. I hope he has insurance on it.
So glad I looked to see if there was any new music from Telefon Tel Aviv. This new album is amazing
Yep. Totally agree with the guy’s procedures and aesthetics, serving his true passion. Wish you and your loved ones all the very best man.
Thanks for sharing this! Can't wait to see your next live set :)
man, this guy inspired me so many times in my life. so cool to see him talk about all of this!
inspiring setup, he seems straight out the matrix
Looking forward to the new Second Woman album. I also really enjoyed Joshua's interview with K-Devices.
Love this - his passion just shines through
Incredible, so much goes into these compositions. Massive fan, also love what he has done with The Black Queen 👍
This and your video with Anthony Rother are my faves, great work!
Telefon tel aviv has been a welcomed member throughout my life.
This inspired me on so many levels. Thank you for that!
Dreams are Not Enough is a such a mature and masterfully crafted album... I hope there's more where that came from...I can wait
I have no idea what he is talking about. Its so unbelievably over my head. This duo greatly affected my life and am so blessed to have experienced them for so long. There is still really not much like it outside of movie sound tracks /back grounds. Truly miss them
7:10 I liked that a lot. Another great video, thanks TEB!
Fun fact: The objects the speakers are standing on are from a company called manduka that produces yoga mats and are called yoga blocks. They are made of recycled foam material. PS: You dont need perfect gear to make perfect music.
Great stuff - his work with Drab Majesty has been incredible...
Cannot explain why, but ive been watching this video several times (like a kid watching good movie more than once) and it still keeps inspiring 😆
This guy is a boss! Such creativity.
Amazing. Very inspiring
What a legend. Never heard of this guy but I love his ideas and process. Thanks Slices!
This was amazing . . simple as that.
Awesome dude
Enjoyed this one!
remarkable, inspiring!
Blessings!
Great setup and workflow, but its his hand movements that drive it home
Saw him last night, guy is a fucking legend!
Max MSP, Monome and Seaboard, fuck yeah
The real question is, what song is playing on the background
Very interesting!
i like this guy!
Where can I buy/download the Guilt Max patches?
I love this! (heads off to take a Max class) =)
Thank you for sharing this great video. Can you make video also with Autechre? (Aphex Twin would be a miracle)
mind blown

Yavaro mate he spends all morning composing it so that he can compose himself. It’s like asking Tobias for his kick, or Zomby for his baseline... All it is, is his identity. Yours is perfect already; go or and express it! And go further than any support can reach !

This dude is genius

Was googling for these manduka monitors since never heard of that brand. Turned out those are "hi performance yoga gear". For a sec I was like "wth". Then I got it.

I feel so awkward to ask about subtitles to this video, because I'm not so well-versed in technical terms. But I would like to translate this correctly to my native language.
As an aside, am I the only one who noticed the WoW purple keys on his keyboard? Are they specific to any other game?
