I love Pete Thorn. I’m a bassist first, a song guy, and Pete’s playing is always so musical even when he’s just shredding. That opening bit, he went into this very Pink Floyd descending melodic major scale thing that was just lovely.

All elements of the pedal covered - I know the pedal design makes it easy but your demo is clear and concise. Oh yeah, and well impressive and tuneful. Your older demo helped convince me to invest in my RK and this latest pedal shows that Tech21 listen to their customers - and keep up with the competition - there's a tuner added (yay) - had to happen so well done Tech21 and well done Pete 👍

This is a great demo, I've shared it. Thanks Pete!! Just shines man! Great mixing too! We can tell when you really enjoy a piece of gear. Something interesting, that Ambience control sounds to me like an envelope filter mod on reverb. Last night I just discovered a very similar, useful sound on my EH Ocean's 11 reverb pedal. If you have one, check it out. I had ignored it previously. Could be always on if you want. The cleans on this are dark and nice, useful of course, but the distortion's tone is what this is really all about. I'd like to get this !

This demo reinforces for me the fact that these pre-amp pedals come close to sounding like a proper amp only when they are pushing a real power amp (or an emulation of thereof) and have speaker emulation (or an IR). In this demo the direct dirty channel sounded like a really hollow and dry fuzzed-out distortion - almost like going straight into a recording console - not amp-like at all. With the PT power-amp, however, this actually sounded real amp-like. If anyone is intending to use these pre-amp pedals bear in mind that you need the other half of the equation (the power-amp and speaker emulation) to really getting these things to sound good. I've got 6 of the Character Series V2 pedals going to a Two Torpedo Cab.

Awesome playing and tones! It is good to see someone demo this the way it was meant to be used. With the small buttons for bite, punch, mid shift and such, do they sit in different positions when you press the buttons or do they return to the same position. I am just wondering if there is a way to tell if the effect is on or off by looking at the button? I think V2 they should change those small buttons to be lit up when they are active. Also, with the punch feature. Does it stay on or off when you set it? Like if I wanted to have the punch always on when I hit the boost for a solo, would it stay on or would I have to first hit the boost with my foot then reach down and press the punch button every time? Last but not least. When are you going to do a tutorial on how to get that awesome wave in your hair?

  • @gram440a

I'm using a Sansamp GT2 because I read that Paul Landers used on in the past. I like the overall sound, but there's something I dislike. When playing single note melodies with high gain, sometimes I get this dead space between notes (where the pick attack should be). The response is not always smooth and fluid like a lead sound should be (in my opinion.) I've tried using different settings, different pickups, active/passive, different picks and power supplies, I can't seem to dial it out. I occasionally hear it from other Sansamp users, so I don't think it's broken, but it does remind me of a lower battery or bad cable sound. I'm interested in a PL1, I notice it has some added features, and I wonder if they ameliorate this problem?

Maybe you're not seeing it, but there is an independent Boost function. And yes, you can run to an amp and direct to the PA at the same time. There's a ground lift on the XLR for that very purpose to eliminate any ground issues. Sorry, but we couldn't fit an effects loop without making the unit larger.

Hi Pete! Always love your stuff and your product reviews. So, I was wondering... I know you previously reviewed the RK5 version, which also sounded great (in your hands, everything does though). How do you feel the two compare? I also use an RK5, but am drawn to some of the new features of the new PL model (tuner, ambience, XLR, headphones, etc.), but I'm also assuming the voicings are completely different, as both players have approached their pedal designs based upon different styles and setup. Also, how does the lead channel clean up and respond to volume roll off? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on this before I choose to purchase the PL model in replacement of my RK5. Thanks so much!!!

Is the cab simulation always on or can you switch it off for going to the front or back of an amp? That's the problem with the original fly rig and the RK fly rig.. couldn't turn it off. Also for the price, they should include an FX LOOP already.
