Tony Todd is the Candyman. He is also Worf's Brother Kurn in The Next Generation Episodes. I believe he has been in Star Trek other times as well. In another favorite SCi-FI show of mine, I just rewatched him portray a human Captain in the B5 made for TV movie : A Call To Arms.

I don't think you need the edit for most people here haha. Although I prefer Hippocratic Oath :P Excellent performances in "The Visitor", but much like "Inner Light" the story is based on not-really-our-main-characters and most of the episode is kind of filler until the big really sad and lethal ending. They're episodes written backwards from the big tragic twist, I don't really feel like they're exploring anything substantial.

  • @jerodast

At least Visitor is theoretically about the relationship between two main characters - although I would argue the love between the Siskos has been ongoing and beautiful from the start and is more meaningful over the long term rather than honed to a sharp edge and jammed between your eyes - unlike the Inner Light where it's just Picard witnessing someone else's story.

I would expect Sisko would be terrified for the rest of his life about dying in a way that left Jake without closure, having seen the lengths he would go to at the expense of his own future and happiness. I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but the changes to the theme music was to give it a more Klingon feel. Since they brought on Worf, and the Klingons take on a much bigger role for the rest of the series, they jazzed up the theme a bit. Heavier, a little darker... echoes of how the series will go..

The Visitor is unique in that a lot of fiction explores grief, but this episode explores what it means to live with unsettled grief. When a loved one dies, it’s hard enough to deal with the heavy burden of that grief but eventually it gets lighter. When one loses a loved one in mysterious circumstances it can take years for that burden to lighten, if it ever does, and hope can feel like an enemy.

Worf was the tactical officer of the Enterprise throughout TNG, however, he inherited Tasha Yar's role of chief of security after she died. Worf lost his dual role when he came to DS9, but instead of just being the tactical officer of a single starship, he's in charge of Starfleet's tactical operations within the entire Bajoran sector. The actor that played old Jake's visiting wannabe writer is the daughter of Andrew Robinson who plays Garak.

24:50 There are a great many background characters that are in nearly every episode. Morn is the most popular/obvious but you'll soon realise Quark's bar does have regular employees, that Ops is manned by an "Alpha Shift" - O'Brien's engineering teams often have familiar faces in them. By virtue of staying in one place each episode, rather than flying to a new planet each week, it allows for secondary and tertiary characters to come to the surface - Nog and Rom are examples of this.

25:00 Kira's hair does change this season - as time goes on, she ends up with a softer look - as the show starts literally the day after the Cardassians withdraw from Bajor and she was a resistance fighter - the next day she's in the "Army" as a Major and posted on a Starbase to represent Bajor to the Federation, whom she distrusts. Over the seven years, she becomes more relaxed and less hostile. Her hair kind of represents that a little -it's not so tightly slicked back - it's softer at the edges, whilst still being all business.

It also shows the importance of family not only in the story, but also in the choice of guest actors, with the great Tony Todd, who is very much a part of the Star Trek family, and Rachel Robinson the daughter of Andrew "Garek" Robinson as Melanie, who is also a part of DS9 family by extension. It's such a well written episode, and Tony Todd deserves all the praise for his acting!!

The Visitor is the only episode of Star Trek that ever had me literally crying. It hits hard. Deep Space Nine is the superior Star Trek. I love all of TNG era Star Trek, but DS9 is best.

While DS9 is my favorite of the Trek shows, The Visitor never hit me emotionally and I could never figure out why. The old age make-up is unconvincing but that's true of whole TNG/DS9/VOY era. And I love me some Tony Todd. I just felt like it was too openly trying to be this show's version of "The Inner Light" and couldn't give in. My loss, really.

I usually skip The Visiter.... it's too wrenching without enough fun along with it, like all others. It's tough. Its just all sad. There are certainly other episodes I cry more for, but this one is tough. Amazing episode.

Aaaaand... that was the best episode of Deep Space Nine. I've been waiting for your reaction to this since you started DS9, months ago. Eight of the nine Top 10 episodes of DS9 are actually yet to come, so you have a LOT of great viewing to come, but The Visitor is my number one. In my DS9 Top 10, a whopping 5 episodes come from season 6. One comes from season 1 that you have watched: "Duet." There are none from seasons 2 and 3 though both seasons have episodes that come close. There is one more season 4 episode in the Top 10. I won't spoil things any more. I love your reactions and I'm looking forward to more.

In the alternate future of Star Trek Online, the Federation eventually made peace with the Dominion, and all Jem'Hadar were freed of Ketracel White. One of the characters that I play as is a Jem'Hadar Starfleet Captain, and I named his ship the U.S.S. Goran'Agar.

RUNABOUT CASUALTIES: The original three runabouts assigned to Deep Space 9 were: Rio Grande, Yangtzee Kiang, and Ganges. Yangtzee Kiang crash-landed and was damaged beyond repair in "Battle Lines." Replaced by the Orinoco ("The Siege"). Ganges was destroyed in "Armageddon Game." Replaced by the Mekong. ("Whispers") Mekong was destroyed in "The Die is Cast" trying to escape the Jem'Hadar armada. Replaced by the Rubicon. ("Family Business") Orinoco was destroyed in "Our Man Bashir". Replaced by the Yukon. (Not a spoiler. Ollie has already seen it)

CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION PROBLEMS THE VISITOR (IMDb Rating: 9.2 = 3rd highest for DS-9) 5:05 Sisko stole that line directly from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". 13:20 When Jake's wife presents Jake's books to Sisko, they switch to opposite hands between cuts. Apparently, Sisko had lots of time in subspace to learn book juggling. 14:48 In a nice bit of continuity, the future uniforms and combadges seen in this episode are consistent with the future versions seen in "All Good Things". HIPPOCRATIC OATH (IMDb Rating: 7.8) 30:10 Bashir picks an odd time to turn his back on a ruthless Jem'Hadar soldier.

I'm not a fan of how they wrote O'Brien in "Hippocratic Oath." He already confronted his past experience and racism in TNG "The Wounded" and it feels like the writers ignored that a bit in order to create conflict with Bashir.

Modern Trek lacks character development and emotions. These actors and writing could pull from your soul. Voyager is the last of true Trek. I love Captain Janeway. She's alone, no Starfleet.

I was rolling my eyes when Hippocratic Oath aired. It was predicable DS9 would "humanize" Jem Hadar. What's the problem? They're not humans and treating them like they are is racism in the guise of the exact opposite. Trek has an enormous tendency to do this and the time I can recall anyone even addressing it was in Star Trek 6.

@@TheNoiseySpectator The ST6 reference? I didn't think it was a spoiler. Well, to be clear, it's not a plot element at all, it's a minor rant that occurred in the first act. Also, this episode occurs chronologically long after the events of ST6, and was released after that movie. To some degree you have to assume people have seen material like that, especially since there's a treaty that's already been mentioned in this show that came from that movie.

Nothing wrong with being different from the crowd. This episode is on my Top GOAT Star Trek list of the entire franchise but I also ABSOLUTELY LOVE Spock's Brain while most folks hate it. I don't care because I have ALWAYS loved Spock's Brain from Day One and always will even if I'm in the minority on that. I don't care. I like what I like. Oh yeah and I also like Move Along Home DS9 Season One and everybody hates that episode but I will always love it.
