I had a severe depressive episode, most of what I remember of it was uncontrollable laughter, the periods of sadness was actually part of the recovery. If you stop caring about your life, why are you going to be sad about it? Madness is uncontrollable, sadness is, so if life feels out of control, madness is where you mind goes.

I'm not depressed, I just like this song

It's crazy hearing this version compared to the Gary Jules version. (yes, I know this is the original) Gary Jules' version makes you feel a sense of depression, like you see the whole world through the lens of depression and sadness. This version gives you the sense of being truly mad. Like being trapped in a depressed state, but also feeling happy and anxious at the same time. Like you don't know what to do. Truly mad.

One of my favorites 80's

This song is about a depressed young person who feels out of place in this world. He sees life as being empty, and looks for ways to escape the pain. The line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.

We didn't have MTV for 2 or 3 years after it premiered, so back in the early 82 when this video came out I used to tape anything and everything music-video related that came on broadcast TV and then rudimentarily edit my favorite videos mix. This was one of my favorites. I learned Roland Orzabal's badass dance moves on my own at friggin' 13 years, so that I'd look cool as hell at the next dance... to my surprise almost no one got it, other than a handful of kids, most of which I began a friendship up until some moved or graduated high school and went off to college.

Gary Jules can't beat those dance moves!

Talks about childrens nightmares being a way to deal with events, therefore, The dreams in Which I'm dying is the best I ever had, is a reference to that book. Its a positive. Roland was unemployed and looking out the window, writing songs while his woman worked 3 jobs to support him. When.people run in circles...

Gary Jules was just 13 when this song came out in 1983 sung by Curt Smith from tears for fears who was 22 at the time, so it's impossible that its Gary's song, maths can be difficult.

One of the best songs ever written.

I never even knew that the gary jules version was a remake. I just found this version today and i instantly find it better in a strange and confusing way. Its the true depression, the one where you smile and deny it even though you cant shake it from the back of your mind.

I’m drawn back to this song specifically because of the haunting mood and resonating music. I missed so much first time around because of biases I wasn’t even aware of. Now Im older & more objective, iv a deeper appreciation for quality; the songs of then. Maybe this is why my own kids are listening to the same music.

But just yesterday I re discovered this song that I didn't remember it existed.. but I recognized the melody instantly when I heard it, as if I had heard it before. One reason is that "Shout" abd and Everybody wants to rule the world " were played to death and still are on classic radio. This gem got overshadowed.
