As an American who's a fan of Kpop and Korean culture, I would like to say that there is a significant difference between US and Korean homecoming. The reason why these events are super emotional for Americans is that not only do loved ones disappear for extended periods of time, but you never know if they will return home alive or at all, given that our soldiers are often sent to active warzones. So, when they return, it's many feelings combined into one, the most powerful of which is relief--relief that they're alive and well. Regardless of politics, we often celebrate their returns even when we don't know them because they put their lives on the line for our foreign policy that is supposed to protect us. This is where disagreements occur, in the notion of what is good foreign policy that is, but regardless, broadly speaking, we respect our soldiers and honor their sacrifices.

I’m a fan too.

When I was a child growing up in the aftermath of 9/11, I've always had a huge respect for our military, despite not personally knowing anyone in the military. These videos always make me cry, and right now, I'm literally crying while watching. It's so touching.

I love this reaction. I agree, because this is a volunteer enlistment, the feelings of seeing them again is a great feeling. You feel relief, happiness, joy and most of all proud to have someone precious to you willing to put their life on the line for others. It's an amazing feeling.

When I first came to America, and after obtaining my education, I was so proud to serve in the service. Coming from a very poor family and having a very poor diet, I was amazed at how well I ate. I also found it very strange that young men would cry for their families. I was just so happy to have more than enough food. I admit I missed my relatives but not at the level I was witnessing during my enlistment. This was just one of the many opportunities I was able to achieve by coming to USA and I for one am very very thankful.

You two are great representatives of S. Korea.

The part where she talks about writing handwritten letters to her boyfriend brought back memories. When I went to basic, we didn't have our cell phones like they do now and only got to make a call to loved ones once a week (if we behaved). So I wrote my wife a letter twice a week from the start of basic until I got out of AIT (almost a half a year). That tradition carried on throughout our time in service (she served too). We both kept our letters. To the people making this video, thank you for your kind words at the end and thank you for your service also.

US military homecoming is too much emotional. I have high respect for them.

yes, they are coming home after they killed people in Afghanistan, Syria, Lybia, etc.

American here: Both my mother and father served in the military. So i never got to see them much growing up. It would be months to years before i actually even see or hear from them. So i mainly grew up with my maternal grandmother.

This was a GREAT one, and Sanghee & Sanghak did this very well together... great reactions from great young people.

Sanghee is literally the prettiest woman ever. It was very nice watching this video as well. Brings back memories.

I remember as a little girl, being loaded into our station wagon before dawn to travel all the way to Travis Air Force Base (2 hr drive) when my dad came home from a deployment. Even though there were two military bases in my home town at the time (McClellan and Mather). That was just the location soldiers came in from when coming back from overseas. And it is just as emotional as these videos show.

It is hard, I can remember finally getting to see my son when he graduated from boot camp, and also the first time I saw him when he came home from Camp LeJune. It felt so good to see him that it almost hurt.

I love watching these; especially because not everyone gets to come home to their families and the ones that can....deserve lots of love.

I'm tearing up but at the same time when I watch these videos I think of how we as humans need to do better for the next generation. Hopefully, one day, the need for soldiers will end and we won't have to see children separated from their parents.

When I went to the Iraq war I told my daughter to keep her night light on, that way if I got lost, I could follow her light home.

I came home on leave while in the Navy and surprised my grandmother. It was Christmas, I waited until my family arrived. While the family gathered (aunts, uncles, godmother)I showed up in my dress blues. The reaction was similar to the video. My grandfather was in the Navy during WW2 and he decided to wear my white hat that night.

Thank you for you kind remarks. As an American, we get extremely emotional when we see, touch and feel our loved ones who have made it back home, even just to visit. It is NOT mandatory to join the military. We volunteer to go (i have never been in the military) of course you're paid. Some people make it a life time commitment. My ex-husband was in the US Marine Corps, my dad as well. My mom was in the Navy. Listening to other videos of yours, sounds like the citizens of your country, don't really think much of people in the military and they kind of look down on them. When you come back from being gone for like 3 years or so is your fanily happy and excited to see you like what you just saw in the video?

You know not knowing if they will come home or not what makes it so heart breaking:( I’m glad they made it home God bless 🇺🇸 and the kind people out there also you two are awesome and sweet.

One thing to remember. US military can be deployed for months at a time. On some of these reunion videos they'll tell you how long it was.

It really sucks that our governments use its own people to fight each other's wants and desires and or "problems". if our people could be side by side without a war or some propaganda fed to us by the powers that be. AND HAVE the luxury of being capable of understanding each other's words, that would be a dream come true. You both are such beautiful people .

For active U.S. military the charge of your loved one dying is real so when they make it home safe it's very emotional

sanghak: appa!!!!! 🤣🤣 I would also think with mandatory service, not seeing your family or friends for 6 months to 2 years would be a hardship. I do not understand why it is not more honored for conscription service.

It is so heartwarming to see that people who grew up in an extremely autocratic country, where emtional expression is so stiffled, have the same responses to soldiers returning home that we havhere in a democratic society. Under all the culture and politics, we're all pretty much the same kinds of humans.

You should have them react to the return of Corporal Daegan Page's remains to Omaha after he was killed in Afghanistan. I watched it live and whew it was so emotional. And really an eye-opener.

I need to understand when military people come home it’s not just cause they were away. They are away at war.

It should also be known that at one time the US did have a draft. The military wasn't always voluntary.

Gotta show them some videos and pictures of the shenanigans the military men and women get up to while in service. My favorite is this quick clip of a unit taking video of a busted up chopper and from off screen someone says "I know what's wrong with it! Ain't got no gas in it!"

This was touching, I hated when my dad returned to the base we lived on. He was a cheating mutha$#@! He hated me and I him! He loved all my siblings and hated me his first born! And yes, I'm definitely his!

America instills a huge amount of respect for soldiers in their students. I have even considered becoming a soldier myself, but I know that the possibility of me doing that is low because I'm nonbinary, and I would have to present myself as my physical sex instead of as my gender, which isn't appealing to me. Hopefully the military will someday become more open with these types of things.

Due to the reality of training and such, you are right, your birth sex will be what determines your quarters, bathing areas, sometimes training (as not all branches have co-ed training), ect. There are directives how it should be handled if someone wants to transition (last I saw determined by a certain level of surgeries to fully change the body including genitals before transition will be recognized.) But I know there's no guidance in there for those outside male/female/transitioning. If that's outside of what you're comfortable with there's always ways to support without joining. Working on a military base as a civilian being one of the big ones.

Are military homecomings really so different, in Korea?

America used to be very conflicted about soldiers during the Vietnam war. Citizens would take that out on soldiers, who were drafted, not the government who kept us in the war. But that all changed on 9/11. Suddenly we became fiercely patriotic. We knew there would be a war, and many young people joined the military. Now there is pride in our military. And people have started thanking veterans again.

This is gonna sound so stupid but is the whole south Korea vs North Korea considered like a Cold War like US vs Russia or is it more just like existing but not trusting? Cause I know for US it was really hard during Iraq cause it was people actively trying to kill you rather then just guarding. Of course it also depended on where you were. I always wonder why conscription didn’t work for US. Maybe it’s part of the foundation of the country that made us rebel but when Vietnam happened and you were forced to fight a war that felt like it had nothing to do with us a lot of people draft dodged. And of course it’s deeper then that like why France helped us when it wasn’t “their” war

We were not just guarding during the Cold War, we lost a great many good men and allies during those 45 years of so called guarding....

As I always say, yes, they do express that much affection, yes it is a genuine act, not made-up; but you would think, from a foreigner point of view, that those people express much affection with each other at home also: no, do not think that way. I also thought the same until I saw them in their houses. American people are not like that, like you think they are, they do not express feelings as these particular occasions may make you think. So it begs the question: why would they express these feelings here? well, part of it is true feelings and part is getting overly excited by just the showing of affection, meaning, the "show". Where are the best actors and actresses in the world? Hollywood, USA. Never forget this. In doubt? come, visit them and see by yourself. (Edit: father watching TV in the living room, wife talking on the phone with her friends in her bedroom, son playing videogames in his bedroom, daughter talking with her friends on the phone/listening to music in her bedroom: all separated. Eating together? only on a few special occasions in the year: Christmas, Thanksgiving, maybe father's or mother's day). I see the critics below beforehand already: "Gabriel you can't generalize" Yes I can, I've seen enough in 20 years; do not have time because of different work schedules? YOU make types of work schedules in businesses and industries based on YOUR lifestyle; so it is this way around, not the way you've been thinking. Change your customs and work places will follow suit.
