Teardown - Pioneer DDJ-400 DJ Controller - How does it work?

Ғылым және технология

In this video I will be tearing down my Pioneer DDJ-400 DJ controller to see how it is constructed and to work out how all the controls operate. This video may also be useful for people who are needing to repair one of these.

    Spilled coffee from my desk onto my Pioneer DDJ-REV1 and using your video to take mine apart to get rid of this coffee spell and clean this mess up! EDIT: I'm now done and got plenty of wet coffee off of my sample buttons. I used 70% alcohol wipes and some q-tips on the board where I noticed coffee and rinsed the plastic/ rubber buttons off with natural soap and allowed to completely dry before putting back in the unit. This video was a life-saver, especially for the cross fader buttons which I would have had no idea on how to take off. I was able to remove most of the knobs using a mini-screwdriver (think eyeglass screwdriver) and wrapping a used alcohol wipe around the tip so it wouldn't scratch the plastic case. They were pretty stuck so I also used a rubber jar lid remover to grip them and pull up vertically - no doubt your hand will hurt a bit when completed. I suggest anyone who takes apart their electronics to take plenty of clear photos before removing screws, etc. so you have a reference where it all goes back.

    At 25:25 you show two photo interrupters. one side of each interupter is a IR LED and the opposite side is a IR photo transistor that detects the InfraRed light. The black 'fingers' in that disc passes between the two halfs of the interupter and breaks the IR beam as they pass through.. The system knows what direction the disc is turning by seeing which one of the two photo interupters has it's beam broken first. That is why there are two interupters fitted. The speed can be worked out by how fast the Infra Red beams are being broken 'interupted'. Does this make sense or am I rambling?

    I guess the links next to the board version might be used by an automatic testing in manufacturing. So they might have the same board in different products, but populated slightly differently, and the link tells the tester what components (and values?) to check for‽

  • @patrickwigmore3462

    @patrickwigmore3462

    4 жыл бұрын

    If the components are inserted by machine, then using a wire link to label the model number means they can have the same machine add the model number label. That will avoid an extra process step and pretty much eliminate the kind of error where a board with the components for one model number gets labelled as a different model number, or where a pre-labelled board gets populated with components for a different model number. Even if they are assembled by hand, it makes sense for the person populating the components to label the board, to reduce the chances of the same kind of errors.

    Hey Cameron Grey, thanks heaps for this great teardown. Always a brave mission to take apart something like this, you never know if it's going to go back together smoothly until it's too late. Turned out to be alright! I'm not sure of how much electrical understanding you have, this is the first video on your channel I've seen. But you did excellent in regards to intuition and research understanding the board and how it works. I found it very helpful, as if I had teared down one myself. The only thing I didn't see that I'd have liked to is how is the capacitive touch electrically coupled to the rotating platter. I assume it's either a cheap metal clamp around the shaft, or a carbon brush like a motor. But couldn't tell from the video. Thanks again!

    They carry out a similar task to a traditional rotary encoder but they use optical sensing rather than any sort of physical contact mechanism in order to reduce wear and drag. This particular model doesn't really have any DSP capability, all audio processing is done in software on the connected computer, the controller simply acts as an audio interface. However, some of their higher end controllers (DDJ-1000.etc) do have integrated digital mixers that carry out the effects in hardware.

    As long as you're confident enough I'd definitely pop it open and get the board out to properly clean it, isopropyl alcohol would be fine to clean it off. Cleaning it alone may me enough to fix the button (maybe some contact cleaner sprayed into the switch as well) but what you really want to avoid is the liquid causing any further corrosion to the board which is much harder to repair than a faulty switch.

  • @camerongray1515

    @camerongray1515

    11 ай бұрын

    Not really on something like this - this is a basic controller where the mixer section is just a control surface that controls the software, it's not a complete hardware mixer. To do what you're needing, you'd be best to get a 4 channel USB audio interface that works with Rekordbox and configure the output settings to send the audio from each deck to separate outputs. You'd then connect this interface into your mixer.

    Unfortunately not, the "mixer" is purely a control surface, there is no physical mixer in the DDJ 400. Higher end controllers such as the DDJ-1000 (which I also did a teardown video of) do contain a real mixer, however it's still a digital mixer and therefore doesn't have any analogue audio passing through it. Your best bet is to use an external audio interface.

    I'm definitely not an electronics expert, most of my knowledge is just pieced together over the years, KZread channels such as bigclivedotcom and eevblog could be a good start though. As for your browse knob, it's probably a "rotary encoder" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_encoder#Standard_binary_encoding), as a first port of call I'd try cleaning it with some contact cleaner spray as it may just have dirt/corrosion in it. If this doesn't help, I'd check all of the solder joints on it to make sure none of them are broken and if they look okay, I'd see if I can find a suitable replacement part and replace it (you may be able to find a brand and part number on the part)

    Are those rotary pots actual pots or (absolute position) encoders? Pots usually only have 3 connections, those seem to have 4.

  • @camerongray1515

    @camerongray1515

    Жыл бұрын

    As far as I'm aware they're all actual pots except for the browse knob which is a standard rotary encoder. Since they are ultimately controlling audio levels, you would really need the analogue linearity of a potentiometer - an absolute position encoder would produce more of a "stepped" output which would be noticeable in the audio. Looking around it seems as though you can get 4 pin potentiometers, some of them use the fourth pin as a centre tap, others simply have the fourth pin but it's not connected to anything.

Unless I push it all the way up, there will be no audio whatsoever! Did you manage to find a solution? Thanks

    Slider caps have locking mechs, huh? Totally would have broken them by just pulling vertically up. That’s some good info to know. Good idea with key puller, too.

    I only discovered the locking mechanism when I couldn't work out why pulling straight up didn't work - glad I didn't keep pulling and went off to look up how to remove them.

    @@camerongray1515 It would be interesting as they appear to share the same pitch adj component but the FLX6 has a higher pitch accuracy in Rekordbox than the 400. The FLX6 is able to get every increment but, the 400 is just shy about 0.02 BPM out. Still accurate, just not as accurate. I have electronics education /knowledge & service my own Pioneer Mixers & CDJs but, I won't look & ruin the warranty on them until I need to 🤣

    DDJ-400 OR DDJ-SB3?

  • @camerongray1515

    @camerongray1515

    4 жыл бұрын

    Really comes down to the software you prefer, the DDJ-400 is aimed towards Rekordbox DJ, the SB3 is geared towards Serato. At least for me the benefit of the DDJ-400 is that it includes a full copy of Rekordbox DJ whereas the SB3 only includes Serato Lite which is somewhat limited in terms of features.
